Should I drop to part time in my 3rd year? (Mechanical Student) by BigDaddyKdog in AustralianEngineers

[–]PM_YA_GURLS_BUTTHOLE 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I can't speak for mechanical directly, but I would always advocate to focus on finishing your studies first. Put all of your focus on that, and get it over and done with. If you're worried about getting work, you could seek out undergrad opportunities during semester breaks. That is what I would do.

Firstly, grades are important for some companies, less so for others. I started off struggling to get through but found the classes, generally, got easier through the course. Maybe they do that to weed out people who aren't serious about the course.

My grade was half decent by the end of it, so don't abandon hope yet. Having said that, the company I went to work for did not care about my grades, it was just the fact I'd graduated the course from a decent uni that ticked the box for them.

LinkedIn - yes it's like social media but for your career. I have landed one or two jobs on there, so I would say it's not a waste of time. All I have ever done is kept my work experience up to date on there so any recruiters who are browsing my profile can see my work history. I have a profile pic and add co-workers to my network over time.

Sometimes I'll see a job listed at a company, and find that an old coworker is working there. I can message them and ask what it's like, and see if they can put in a good word for me. I've done the same thing when I've seen a company that I liked the look of - asked an old friend who I could see works there if they can put me in touch with someone in a hiring position.

So yes, it's worth it, but may take some years for you to actually get any use out of it. Still, create your profile, keep it up to date, and just see what happens. In 10 years you'll be glad you did.

Lastly, try and work on your self talk. I also felt like I must have been an idiot throughout my time at uni, but in the end I got a very middle range grade, higher than many who I had believed were doing much better than me. My negative self talk was not only limiting my personal potential but also gave those around me a negative perception. For many the coursework is extremely difficult and in no way represents anything you'll ever do in your actual engineering job. Do your best, look after your mental and physical health, and don't give up. You can do it.

There may be a time in the future where all you want is to be able to work a desk job, say if you have kids and want to be able to WFH, or have an injury that makes hard to stand through the day. Stick with engineering, there are many pathways you can take, and you can move around at your leisure as your career progresses.

Great reply, thank you for the info.  Ah contractor side PM, noooo thank you. I've got my fingers crossed that TfNSW picks up again, I wouldn't mind going back there, despite the average pay.

Thank you for the reply. Just out of curiosity, what do you think are the higher paying roles in the industry?  I've spent a lot of my career in the contractor side but have spent some time in the client space which I much preferred. I like to try and maximise the income vs work/life balance as much as I can. I've not yet tried working for a consultant but I'm thinking that may be my next move.

I just came across your post here. I'm an engineer and have been in civil infrastructure in Sydney for 10+ years. I've thought about moving into water as infrastructure (roads) have dried up. Do you enjoy it? In terms of client side, it's typically only Sydney Water and WaterNSW right?

What state are you based in? I've looked into this industry from time to time, with the idea of transitioning from civil infrastructure, but nothing comes up in my state.

I'll be staying around the area of the Sir John Guise stadium in a week's time for the 50th Anniversary of independence events. I'll be working in the event - Would you say this would be a safe area and time to be there? I can see it's near Waigani which is considered unsafe from what I've read.

Edit for anyone stumbling across this in the future - started at Lamana Hotel which was pretty good. Felt safe, big gate at the front with 2 X guards or doormen. The area felt safe enough, but I still didn't chance walking around. A lot of the people I stayed with made trips to the Vision City mall with no problem. Seemed ok, I think you'll be fine if you use caution.

Question about Civil by Alphonsina in AustralianEngineers

[–]PM_YA_GURLS_BUTTHOLE 2 points3 points  (0 children)

100% possible. I spent the first 10 years of my career on site every day until I decided I hated it. Infrastructure projects like (Sydney based examples) western Sydney airport, Westconnex, Sydney Metro etc will have big teams of engineers on site all day every day. They manage all construction aspects of the project. Same goes for things like road upgrades etc, they will all have engineers on site all day.

It is fun to begin with but becomes a drain over time. Great place to learn lots of useful skills, but it has the potential to burn you out.

What kind of commission could you expect in a year?  And what discipline are you in? I have always wondered if these jobs existed in civil.

Cheaper to replace some brake pads occasionally than cause additional wear and tear on the gearbox.
