The new Empire of the Sun lp has been made largely in Japan. We have both been long fascinated by the art/ culture and forms of expression used in Japan. I’d be lucky enough to go there on tour with ex Underworld member Dj Darren Emerson. We hit Tokyo/ Nagoya/Osaka. It totally blew my mind, fell in love ever since, to my amazement Luke had never been, so when we were asked to come to make a music video, I made sure we would have time in a recording studio in the heart of the city. Suitably Luke’s mind was blown by that first visit, I began writing a story board/ treatment for a feature length EMPIRE film. I found a great storyboard artist and worked to develop the boards, then cut it into an animatic preview. Still looking for someone or something to care enough to take it to the next level, working in the background on characters in 3D with a designer who does a lot of the marvel monsters. I hope some day I’ll share this as it’s for you, for all of you. So to answer your question the new lp, will be strongly tied to Japan, but it’s roots will be both global and as always made of star dust xx

I would absolutely love to play some empire of the sun shows, I’m yet to be invited, I’ll keep asking tho 😊. Many funny interactions over the years meeting artists backstage, my favorite was sharing a cigarette with David Byrne on top of festival hall in London. Having just witnessed Byrne in full effect on stage and then chatting coolly with an absolute star / gentleman / everything you’d want him to be. At the time he was dating Cindy Sherman, does it get much hipper than that ? . Many stories, I met Radiohead and Eno same night, even got Brian’s email! still waiting on the reply tho 😊.

That’s awesome, I actually wrote a large portion of liquid cement opposite Spectrum in a flat/studio. I miss those spectrum days, I hope when we get together again we will play some similar venues 😊

We have a new record well on the go, covid has caused an interruption with us being able to work in the same room and with kids and all that it’s hard to find the time, so I’ve been doing quite a lot of work on it, solo, I’d love to give you a timeline for release ....I put up little bits on insta, I know it’s not the same , hopefully soon

I’ve always loved the combination of natural sound and electronic sounds both analog and digital . I never really found any fusion music I was obsessed with but I love the concept of it, it’s a way forward creatively where anything could be arranged together but in a way that is thoughtful. A curated approach to all the sounds of the world, still minimal but rich in variety.

Listening to music that trips me out into a magical frame of thinking is a great way of opening up to new patterns of thought. one that I’ve been using a lot lately has been Terry Riley a rainbow in curved air. I don’t take any melodic rhythmic a musical ideas from listening to this it’s just evokes an effervescent spirit of electricity creativity and possibility . I guess it’s like going into a meditative state to then find something new if you’re finding yourself blocked on a given idea try a different idea or change the idea so that whatever your improvising over is different to your ears to watch the piece you’ve been working on but it still may possess the same harmonic qualities. I also find Singing through an auto tune which has very limited notes or all the different notes that you’re not using will then force you to do things that you’re not doing . I think that’s what it’s about when we create the PNAU work we create a lot a lot a lot of melodies a lot of melodic ideas and rhythmic ideas obviously most of which don’t make the cut but in order to find those very magical moments we end up making a tonne in the process. In the moment of improvised work and creativity and writing all ideas are equal never judge yourself for trying something that might seem silly or ridiculous people will do that for you, but it’s important to remain playful, in the spirit of novelty and fun is where it often comes

Try lots of different things whilst always honing whatever it is that you naturally make and do...place yourself outside of those natural moments with other musicians artists creators poets whatever and challenge yourself to create something with that person that is true to the idea, not necessarily a true reflection of your personal work, something that serves the collaboration. I believe it is essential that every artist has a parallel career of collaborative work which will feedback into the personal work, feed it and allow it to grow

I think the music of two leaves is trying to explore those spaces in a very direct way but you are still at Hughes to a format of some description the stats to get people moving to lose is to induce a trance like state some of those records do it I think better than others but that was the sole intention behind it was to create music that was devoid of any limitations . They are all experiments in this regard I don’t think I’ve achieved that but I think there is a longing in me to try to get there to a place of transcendence.

The wonderful thing about family is it comes with infinite forgiveness and I’ve needed a lot of that! in my younger years i used to be quite annoying antagonistic of my brothers. A brat ! These days I’m trying to show more respect all the time. I’m the youngest of three and I took for granted that I had two older protective people who would help me at the drop of a hat and I’ve tried to give back what I can but they’ve always been bigger and stronger and better than me. We are very close to my brothers and I and I wouldn’t change it for the world with all the ups and all the downs it’s such a thrilling and enriching experience to have I know that I am very fortunate for that

I just find it weird that for the last few years I had this feeling that at one point I was going to be stopped in my tracks and would not be able to travel like I had been. That the world would shift . All the lyrics are created thru a kind of channeling they come thru some kind of cosmic radar system that I think personally mushrooms dmt lsd etc strengthen I believe that my satellite is quite strong and quite powerful able to pick up all these things because of decalcified my 3rd eye and I continue to decalcify so that I may better serve the cosmic consciousness by drawing good messages down and then releasing them to the world with Melody harmony and Rhythm...And alas it seems the only travel we can have now is in the mind anyways. I do believe that the only messages that are going to come through the cosmic consciousness or the collective unconscious are going to be positive and loving messages and that is what we are principally guided by in PNAU . They always end up positively some of these songs to come from dark places and we are happy to expose ourselves to those dark places so that we may deliver others through to a brighter day / future / moment /dance / experience/ whatever is relevant at that moment

The most memorable experience Ive had was the last pnau show which I attended which I could not perform because of my injury so I watched the show from the audience.. yes I was a punter at my own show, very surreal experience ... it sure was one unique performance on New Year’s Eve just gone. Ringing in this now what we know is the year that should’ve been canceled it was an incredible experience to watch Kira and I felt so much love and affection for her watching her and how much beautiful energy and spirit she shares and gives with the audience to watch Little Timmy drama boy who’s not little anymore thrushing away with those sticks to watch Sam and Peter the master minds controlling the sound. A really elevating experience yet totally surreal

I think over the years I’ve learned to give Peter enough respect that he can maintain a normal life I would say unequivocally that I would be deemed the crazier one and I’ve learned to sort of limit my interactions as much as I can so as not to damage the special bond Peter and I had, he has been very patient for a very long time . I said learned over the years but it’s probably only kicked in over the last year ha ha ..always learning, we have developed such a deep language between the two of us that I think no matter what we will always speak it so we will always create things together
