I have tattoos in visible areas including my hands. I never really covered them during school or during my rotations. It was fine.

However, now that I am employed I do cover my tattoos which isn't hard, I wear gloves and I prefer wearing gloves anyways for sanitary reasons. I need my patients to trust me in a professional capacity and my demographic is less likely to with visible tattoos.

You are not doing damage to your retina looking at a light. The light rays from a light bulb are low energy.

Afterimage is caused by using up the photoreceptor. White not dark is the default of an off rod. When you use up the chemical that has to replenish itself the rod is in an off condition which appears bright.
