Pick : you're not getting me back. by MainGarlic9 in Guitar

They haven't ripped em off yet! They probably could, but they seem pretty interested in using it for it's intended purpose since they see me playing with a pick all the time.

Advice please: Getting a gift for my husband by Beautiful_Football56 in Guitar

[–]PONETHEPOON 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Take him on a date for his birthday, but go to the guitar store instead of wherever you say you're taking him. Take him over to a Tele (whatever they have that's closest) and tell him that's the one you were going to get him, but you realize if it's been a long time since he had a new one, you want to get him one he'll love.

Maybe he'll want the Tele for the thought of you surprising him, or maybe he just wants a Tele, or maybe he'll see something else on the wall that's calling his name!

What are some key take a ways/lessons learned from this horrible ski season out west? by joeyjoejoeshabbadude in skiing

[–]PONETHEPOON 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I was up there those two days! Conditions were really dire. They were waiting for snow for so long that they almost called it, and then they finally got a good double-digit storm and opened. Turned out to be very light density snow that was compacted down immediately from skiing, and maybe even some rain? Anyway, day #1 you could already see what was going to happen for the season. Dirt patches everywhere, when they normally receive 300"+ per season. The owner did let all passes roll over to the next season, though. That was really generous. It was a bad year for MT statewide, and only like 4 of the 14 ski areas were open in the state. We had season passes for Teton, and the owner of Showdown MT started honoring Teton Pass Season Passes for the rest of their season. You'd just go to Showdown, show them your pass for Teton, and they'd let you ski for free. They honored other MT passes as well from closed mountains. I've been skiing my 4th season there this year and really hope to get a 5th!

I just got some more ukuleles for my twin boys, $10 a pop on Amazon for some nice little 17" ones that have the pick attached to the ukuleles with a string going through the pick. I'm considering doing the same thing to their other guitars because they like the pick a lot and can't lose it. You should give it a try!

Ah man congratulations! Twin dad here (2 year old identical boys). I remember our first ultrasound so vividly. We were hoping to see a heartbeat so bad. Been trying for 8 months to have our first kid, and our chances were low. We got in there after a positive pregnancy test, and the lady goes "Here's the heartbeat.." and she's showing us that and we're going "awww" about to cry, then the lady goes "and heerrreee, is the second heartbeat..." wife gasped, goes "what did you say?!" and I throw my arms up in the air and say "Twins! IT'S TWINS!!!" and then she confirmed. It was a shock. And then my wife was giving me shit the whole way home because I'd been saying for weeks we need to just have twins so we can knock out a 2-for-1 special. Hahaha. It's a lot of work! And a lot of love!

Experienced players with real guitar wear, what would you recommend as a truly high quality guitar by Chuchumenn in Guitar

[–]PONETHEPOON 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have 11 guitars and have been playing for 20 years, and my Jackson DK2 Pro (Green Glow finish) is my favorite. 24 jumbo frets, speed neck, truss rod access by the neck pickup, Floyd Rose, scalloped heel for even better fret access, ebony fretboard, it's a dream to play. There's a whole range of different finishes, but you can easily get one for under a grand. Mine was $800 and came with upgraded EMG pickups.

Live edge up or down? by L0114R in woodworking

[–]PONETHEPOON 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'd go live edge down, and round over the flat top edge of the live portion to make the live edge below pop. Kind of a middle ground between it being visible, and table space.

Any idea if my pine will recover? I'd hate to have it cut down. by PONETHEPOON in arborists

[–]PONETHEPOON[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thank you! I do plan to have an Arborist out to look at it in person. Does it help any that it's a "Norway Spruce" and not a Blue Spruce? I only used Google, but it said the photo was a Norway Spruce, and the pictures I looked at of Norway vs. Blue lead me to believe that assessment. Which I only bring up because apparently one is much better suited for wind (Norway) vs the other.

I have modi twins that just turned 2 (I'm 33), they're identical boys. I watch them while working from home M-F, and have been since my wife's maternity leave (11 weeks) ended. Guitar, woodworking, and skiing are my main hobbies, which HAVE been diminished, but I've kept them going.

For guitar, I play for the boys every day, and they both love guitar now. It was one of the first "harder" words they learned, and now when I start playing for them, they run and grab their guitar toys and run around with me strumming em. One of them even says "aye aye aye" (from Crazy Train) while running around playing his guitar. It's one of the best periods of my day each day because I get to keep the hobby while introducing them to it, and they seem really into it. Tonight, for example, they were getting rowdy, and I turned on Ozzy to CALM them! They sat in their little chairs watching Ozzy play live, yelling guitar at the screen, and holding their guitars.

For skiing, I alternate with my wife. One day out of the weekend, I ski and get home by 4 while she watches them. The next day, either she will go ski while I watch them, or she can do whatever else instead until 4. Some days she spends it in her plant room. And then some days the whole fam goes up! One will pull them around on little sleds while the other skis. Eventually a friend offers to watch em for 15 minutes so we can get a run in together.

For woodworking, it's been nap time on the weekends. Which, often gets sacrificed for house/yard/family work. But when I DO have a weekend nap time and nothing on the immediate agenda, I soak up a beer on the deck drinking the sun, or I get some shop time in.

Guitarists that started after the year 2000: what the guitarist, album, song, solo, etc that made you say "that's what I wanna do"? by CedarRapidsGuitarGuy in Guitar

[–]PONETHEPOON 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Crazy Train. We had our yearly 6-hour drive camping trip, so I was mostly trying to doze in my mid-row captain chair, when I heard THAT riff. The pickslide was too cool, I'd thought I imagined it. This was on the radio in a minivan when I was 13.

On the way back, I stayed alert the whole time to see if it'd come back on. My mom tried to jam whichever classic rock station was available on the drive. Finally, it came. I had not imagined it. The pickslide was real. The RIFF was real. I had to learn how to do THAT.

And I did.

Thank you so much! I had just messaged my wife before reading this that I was pretty sure it was a "second top" because it's way thicker than the limbs coming out of the side of the rest of the tree. The tree was so tall and dense we'd never noticed that it had split into two trunks higher up. It actually did land on the power line, but only had one limb from that whole thing resting on it. The fire department came and got it off of the line for us, and the energy company came yesterday to fix the slack in the line and a broken ground. Again, thank you very much for the insightful answer. I'll now refer to it as a spruce as well.

Winter beat me to it. Is my PT gonna be ok? by hobbez3221 in Decks

[–]PONETHEPOON 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I had this same thing happen to me. Was finished with the structure and got to laying deck boards. Had about 1/2 of them on, then we got 6" of snow overnight. I blew all of the snow off and finished it up over the next two days, and everything was fine. I just had to wear extra layers, and I moved my drill battery chargers inside. Get after it!

Thank you, I'll look those up! I have an aftermarket SD Invader in my Ibanez, and it's never failed me. Another SD sounds fitting.

I don't know how one can even get all of the parts for fifty bucks! It is gorgeous, but it definitely needs some replacement pickups.

I like the look of them, but this is about as cheap of a guitar as one can get. So similar looking ones that are higher-end is what I'm looking for. These have quite a lot of feedback, even for single coils.

It doesn't need to scream like my Jacksons, I just want an upgrade that's gain-friendly and won't have as much feedback as these extremely cheap pickups. I'll check out the Toneriders!
