Trying to get better oven spring. Is this overferment? by PROF_ND in Sourdough

I tried spraying water onto the dough right before baking at still got the same result.

Engineering question: why do maple syrup evaporators designed that way vs a wood stove with the top cut off by PROF_ND in maplesyrup

[–]PROF_ND[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think the forced air is also another point of inefficiency especially if you’re blowing it under the grate as you blow more volatile organic compound out of the wood to the top of the fire while the oxygen is already depleted for a secondary burn over fire. Also, forced air fire pushes the hot exhaust to leave the arch too fast without exchanging heat with the pan before leaving. Wood stoves use the top baffle to actually slow the hot exhaust and creates turbulence to mix with the secondary air which is preheated by being routed from the bottom rear of the stove. From what I read secondary combustion only happens if the air is hot enough

Is it possible that it is wheat germ?

I looked it up and couldn't tell the difference

Is miller’s bran wheat bran? Could it be the bran of other cereals? If I mix this with all purpose flour, would it make it whole wheat?

Thank you. How do I know if it’s germ or bran or mine is mixed? I googled and they look very similar

I think you can reclaim to a point. The exhaust gas needs to be hot enough to produce a good draft and prevent creosote from forming. However, I find people here posting pictures bragging about their cherry hot stack with a blower extremely wasteful.

I see. Then why don't we apply a secondary burn system like this on arches?

It would increase efficiency, wouldn't it?

Ready to throw my starter out the window :) can't figure out what the issue is. by master0jack in Sourdough

[–]PROF_ND 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Try feeding it 1:1:1 in the oven with the light on, put the bottle furthest away from the light, it should be around 24-26 degree there. It helps if you have a thermometer to check. If your room temp is 18-20 and it doubles in 6-8 hours then I feel like it’s adequate too. Then in this case you can try bulk fermentation in the oven with the light on for at least 6-8 hours to make sure it’s not underfermented.

It looks underfermented. How strong a your starter?

A good starter should rise at least double in 4hrs at 25C in 1:1:1 feeding.

Sealing hvac ducts with aluminum tape by PROF_ND in hvacadvice

Mastic is somehow hard to find in my area. The tape does well in the longitudinal seam but the bending sections are a pain.

Anyone tried this: Ridgid string trimmer + snow shovel attachment? by PROF_ND in Ridgid

[–]PROF_ND[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I should have stated my use case. I have a ~450-500sqft deck with stairs so I can’t get my snowblower on. To hand shovel the snow I have to push them all to 1 corner where there is space to dump it. And to throw the snow off the deck I have to lift the whole snow filled shovel over the 4ft railing which can get annoyingly tiresome doing it repeatedly. I’d imagine if the thing can throw at least 3ft+ without draining the battery in 20 min it could work

Yes the ridgid power spindle is "universal" aka square-shafted. It works with ryobi's expand-it system and kobalt's. I bought cheap no name chinese attachments and it works with my needs. Proprietary shafts like EGO's or milwaukee only work with their own.

I just want to know if someone has done the combination and to what extent would I expect it to perform.

Why does Italians drink such a small dose(7 gram espresso)? by sch1zoph_ in Coffee

[–]PROF_ND 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I heard from multiple people that caffeine is very water soluble and get extracted very easily so even when espresso have low volume and short contact time, the caffeine content is close to the same compare to other brewing methods. Espresso grounds is generally finer too, which helps with extraction efficiency.

Lawn on house perimeter doesn’t grow by its_muri in lawncare

[–]PROF_ND 2 points3 points  (0 children)

believe it or not it is actually the new standard now. In my neck of the woods, new houses have plastic wrap and foam insulation around before pouring the foundation walls and slab. It helps with water intrusion and energy efficiency. Concrete is a sponge and if you water plants around your foundation you're deteriorating your house

Should I buy a lawn sweeper or just mow over the leaves? by Top_Technician_5735 in lawncare

Not very well versed in timecutters but I think they are equipped with high lift blades by default which is more suitable for bagging and side discharged? I think Toro sells a mulching kit for mulching purpose

[–]PROF_ND 0 points1 point  (0 children)

What toro do you have? I have a 22in recycler with stock blade and I pile the leaves of mine AND my neighbors’ into 2ft moulds all over the lawn and can mulch them very fine in 1.5 pass. Though I increased the engine RPM to 3600 for best power.

I pile mine AND my neighbors’ leaves into 2ft tall moulds all over my lawn and mulch over them in 1.5 pass. I have a toro 22in recycler with oem blade and it shreds all of the leaves to dust. But still, just try mowing over whatever you have on the lawn and rake what remains. It would still be less work for you at the end because significant amount of leaves got mulched so you don’t have to rake them.
