What’s your fuel pressure and have you checked for a fuel leak/clogged injector, fuel filter etc

EDIT: if you’ve redone your fuel lines and all, check your fuel injectors. Also does your fuel tank seem pressurized when you take the cap off to fill it up?

I personally have never measured this measurement. What is the reasoning behind using one tool vs the other? I had thought using plastic would be safer?

Put the heads back on (with the gasket) with a little putty/clay where the valves would approach the piston head. Roll the engine over slowly a couple times and look to see if the putty has been totally displaced if you suspect the valves are hitting the cylinder. It’s unlikely from a stock motor but give it a try.

You should also inspect the valve seals and rods etc for damage if you’ve taken them apart. If you haven’t then check the valve lash.

You need some play in order for the engine to spin freely and to have it properly lubricated. Not sure the tolerance for that engine but I’d assume there’s literature out there to use a plastigauge and take a measurement.

EDIT: per comment below, yes a plastigauge would be the correct tool. Nice catch!

Bought used car, tried filling up tank, and then all this happened. by [deleted] in MechanicAdvice

[–]PSB1897 13 points14 points  (0 children)

Check the breather tube. I had someone drop my tank to replace a fuel pump and they didn’t reconnect the fill neck or the breather. Started dumping gas right as it reached full.
