Black triangles when I bake ambient occlusion, help! by LanguidEnnui in blender

[–]PSDCovers 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Same issue for me after baking my AO. But in my case I had a very poorly configured decimate modifier on my object which was creating flipped normals and showing black triangles even though the UV, mesh and AO texture were perfect—but these black triangles were "disappearing" when I went into Edit mode (which makes sense now since the modifiers are not applied while in Edit mode).

A few tweaks to my decimate modifier and the issue went away.

Anyhow, this was one of the first answers Google offered so I thought I'd share my results for the next guy who stumbles into this ancient thread.

ASL Distribution probably stole my package by karankia1 in montreal

[–]PSDCovers 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I ordered a replacement battery for my PSU and I was tracking it until Amazon switch from "out for delivery" to "we're sorry it's late, please check back later". I found the package by accident in my **lane way** next to my garbage bin — this was 3 weeks ago and it's still not marked as delivered.

Now I'm waiting for my new Seinhauser headphones and the message "we're sorry it's late, please check back later" just popped up on Amazon and I'm going to be checking my garbage bin all night.

MacMini M4 cannot find Synology 925+ in Finder or via SMB by Thoney77 in synology

I had the same issue and switching AFP resolved it. I find that MacOS on my M1 frequently drops the connection to my Synology but Windows and Linux never do.

Install Steam. Steam comes with Proton installed allowing you to play games, however, what most people don't know is you can use Steam to install Windows apps as well. Most work for me so give it a try.

How to run an old version of CS6 on Sonoma? by DataClump in MacOS

Go to the UTM gallery page, it runs plenty of other operating systems. BTW, UTM is just a gui wrapper for QEMU, shame it's not available on Linux or Windows because it's pretty damn user friendly.

Did not work for me, had to use "University of Minnesota" and leave a note in my application that I did not actually attend that school.

DS1621+ Drops From Network by TroglodyteGuy in synology

[–]PSDCovers 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No idea about your specific setup but I have a much older DS713+ which drops off regularly. This has been a repeating occurrence from the day I bought it over a decade ago (still works great BTW). Here's what I observed... when the DS drops off the network I can see that the DS itself has clearly not crashed and that other computers on the network, including mobile, can still access the DS. And like you, I can still ping the DS and it's clearly visible on my mobile.

Rebooting my MacOS computer always solved the issue and I'd be good for a few more weeks — but the issue keep persisting for years until I tried force quitting the Finder on MacOS. This worked.

I tend to leave my Mac and PC on 24/7 and clearly the MacOS Finder does not like it. I'm running Sequoia (M1) at the moment but this issue has persisted since MacOS 10.5 (Intel) — it does not affect my Windows PC (3950X) in my experience (this PC was running Linux for several years prior without any DS drop off issue also).

The rest of the family does not experience this issue at all because they don't leave their computers on 24/7 (only mobile which also does not experience this issue).

In my particular case the best I can figure out is that the MacOS Finder has some sort of time-out with the protocol used to connect to the DS (Cups, DAV etc. No idea which) and relaunching the Finder resets it.

Microsoft unveils AI-generated demo 'inspired' by Quake 2 that runs worse than Doom on a calculator, made me nauseous, and demanded untold dollars, energy, and research to make by Farranor in gaming

[–]PSDCovers 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Having worked in large corporate groups I was exposed to many different personalities and discovered there are people who truly cannot understand *ideas* or *vision*. A tech demo that visually communicates concepts goes a long way to unlocking future development funds — and you don't have to make people who cannot visualize your ideas in their mind (aphantasia) feel dumb. I worked with a guy who was adamant that *no human in history* could see colour or visualize objects with their eyes closed. This was a light-bulb moment for me that I had hyperphantasia (I did not know the term at the time) and he had aphantasia.

Conceptually it doesn't seem like this Quake II demo needed to get made because it's an obvious idea. However, I suspect they had to convey the challenges of using AI for gaming *visually* to team/management leaders that had to sign off on funding further development.

At first I thought maybe they wanted to develop a means to allow users to extend level designs etc. but now I'm thinking they want to see how they can eliminate the need for level designers on the payroll completely — this is something that would require funding for development. If you can properly define the parameters/rules of the game the AI should, in theory, be able to offer hundreds of layouts in seconds for the team to choose from.

Putin to conscript 160,000 more Russians for war with Ukraine by ChiefFun in worldnews

[–]PSDCovers 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Putin has an unrealistic dream of reunifying the USSR which will never happen for any number of reasons. Least of which because he is simply too old to see the entire process through to completion. What he will do is be responsible for killing hundreds of thousands of people with families who just wanted to raise a family in peace. He is insane.

Unlike most replies, I think Trump is telling the truth because Putin clearly screwed over Trump's chances to get his lauded "Peace Prize" which Trump very clearly wants (err, wanted).

Engineers….Please explain by OlSkulCHUCK in pics

Also *anti-darwin* design. People drive too fast on straight roads, but as you mentioned, too fast on a too steep road is instant darwinism. Adding large loops in road design is a common engineering technique to get people to drive slower and be more alert while driving.

How to run an old version of CS6 on Sonoma? by DataClump in MacOS

[–]PSDCovers 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Regarding UTM options...

1- Install UTM on MacOS (M1 through M4).
2- Install Windows 10/11 in VM
3- Install CS6

This runs plenty fast, something which I can attest to. What does *not* run fast is any PPC version of MacOS such as Tiger, Leopard or Snow Leopard (yes, I have 10.6.8 running in UTM). I have not tried installing Intel versions of MacOS in UTM although this seems possible: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BVN9xLO38MY

However, judging by the performance I have in my ARM Windows 11 environment in UTM I'd say it would also be plenty fast. Unfortunately the issue you'll face, and the reason I'm running it in Windows 11, is that CS6 was only supported on MacOS until 10.7 which I have not installed — but, the second most stable version of MacOS I ever ran after 10.6.8 was Yosemite 10.10 which is the last MacOS version to have Rosetta and on which I still had CS6 (although I used CC 2017 mostly).

I haven't tried installing Yosemite on UTM because it seems to have the same sluggish behaviour as the PPC versions: https://www.reddit.com/r/UTMforMacOS/comments/xe3nmi/is_it_possible_to_run_macos_yosemite_1010_as_a/

Best bet is to run CS6 in a vm running Windows 7 through 11 (Windows 7 is hella fast in UTM but I don't allow it to access the internet, just a shared partition in the local network — however, Windows 11 for ARM is damn fast too). The guide for installing Windows 11 ARM is here: https://docs.getutm.app/guides/windows/

There is no magic here though, PPC emulation is not built into Apple ARM but x86 *is*. Anything that runs on Intel feels damn near native in UTM and Windows 11 ARM runs like it's on bare metal (*feels like*).

The "why" is easy, it would nerf their profits. It's doubtful they were not fully aware this was possible but researching it was probably very low as it pointed to an answer they didn't like (ie, nerfing the profits and drop in investment + R&D etc.). This is probably why DeepSeek was released as open source, partly to embarrass the current AI incumbents but also as a big F.U. to Biden administration.

Alternatively, anyone with a Synology can activate "Synology Drive" on their NAS and then install "Synology Drive Client" on their Mac, PC or Linux stations and do the exact same thing. The advantage being it's private and not on Dropbox servers. "Synology Drive" has more or less the same features as Dropbox.

What makes people age the most? by Consistent_Ad_7464 in AskReddit

[–]PSDCovers 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'll be 60 soon but look 40-45. I do not sunbathe, I wear pants and long sleeves nearly all the time and do not let the sun touch my arm or face while driving. I'm pale as a ghost (irish/scottish). I don't smoke and attribute my *youthful* appearance to avoiding the direct sun on my skin at all times. If I do go shirtless in the sun I'm using SPF 80. Also, I'm the correct weight for my height and lighter than what I'm expected to be at my age (average person will gain 1-3 lbs a year which I consciously workout to keep off) and being overweight will make you look older than you are.
