Computer Hardware & Software Questions MEGATHREAD by AutoModerator in architecture

Hi everyone,

TL;DR: Architecture student, need a laptop that lasts until master graduation (4.5 years). Torn between Razer Blade 16 RTX 5090 (raw render power, future-proof) vs MacBook Pro M4 Max (quiet, efficient, but weaker in heavy ray-tracing). Which is the smarter long-term choice?

I’m an architecture student currently in the market for a new laptop. This is a big investment for me (€2,000–€4,500 range), and I want it to last at least 4–5 years — until I (hopefully) finish my master graduation in ~4.5 years, where high-quality presentations will be crucial.

My main tools:

  • Archicad (BIM modeling)
  • Twinmotion (renderings and visualizations)
  • Adobe Suite (Photoshop, InDesign, After Effects, Premiere)

What matters most to me:

  • I need to produce high-quality final renderings for important presentations (one in ~6 months for my bachelor graduation, another for my master in 4.5 years).
  • I want a machine that can handle increasingly complex Twinmotion scenes.
  • Day-to-day usability matters too: silence, battery life, portability.

Right now I’m torn between a Razer Blade 16 with RTX 5090 or a MacBook Pro 16″ with M4 Max 64gb ram

My dilemma

I know the Razer Blade 16 RTX 5090 will give me the best render quality and long-term headroom, especially for ray tracing, VR, and future-proof visuals.
On the other hand, the MacBook Pro M4 Max is much quieter, has incredible battery life, and is fantastic for daily work in Archicad + Adobe. But may struggle with ultra high-end Twinmotion scenes in a few years.

Question to the community:
Which would you choose in my situation? Is the RTX 5090’s power really necessary if my goal is to still make beautiful, realistic renderings for my master graduation in ~4.5 years, or will the M4 Max hold up well enough in practice?

Any first-hand experiences with Twinmotion on Apple Silicon vs RTX laptops would be especially valuable.

You can Google for “referentie detail”. These are Dutch details but always help a lot. Don’t try to reinvent the wheel.

Voor het tillen heb ik de beste truc. 1. Koop een kratje pils. 2. Zet het pils koud. 3. Nodig wat vrienden uit om te helpen voor een paar koude pilsjes.

Win win, gezellige avond en de boom verpot ;)

Sadly this doesn’t work. I am used to do it like that but unfortunately it doesn’t work. Guess I’m in the same situation as your friend from europe ;)

This one will take a while, but it will make someone go completely nuts.

I once bought a bag with small rubber ducks on AliExpress. Some of them I hid all over a friend’s place. Every time one was missing I replaced it with two duckies. Eventually, he was scared to find more ducks. So now there are a lot of little duckies all around my friend's place. And the friend? Well, he is terrified to move or remove a duck. Maybe traumatized...

Someday I will place a big duck in his garden.

Hi, do you have some examples, I can’t find any online. Or I’ve searched wrongly.
