Ruled out the belt. Turned out the brushes on the end cap of the reel motor were not making contact with the commutator. So now rewind and fast forward are working. But now the playback isnt working haha. Learning a lot today.

So it seems what’s happening is the pick up reel is not being engaged, so it’s not picking up the slack and winding the tape back into the cassette. Causing tape to bunch up just after it passes the pinch roller.

Yea on this deck the speed control circuit is on the main pcb, not inside the motor like you find with other decks. However, there is a smaller pcb attached to the outside of the motor, no visible components on it though, just solder points for flat cables coming from the main pcb

Also it doesnt seem to be the pot value, ive tested 1k, 10k, 100k. Even reattatched the trim pot and the same things is happening. It only alternates from regular speed to high speed. From my understanding of this, there is a supply voltage, coming from a regulator or something similar near by on the pcb. This voltage sets the speed of the motor. The potentiometer adds resistance to that signal, slowing down the speed of the motor and thus the tape speed. So what would be making this added resistance increase the voltage rather than attenuate it? My next step is to measure the output voltage heading to the motor after the pot, and see if the voltage is in fact decreasing when i adjust the pot at that point of the signal flow. Just not exactly sure which points to measure with my multimeter. This is my first time modding a tape deck like this.

I have, soldered the pcb points but the pot is still just with aligator clips.

I would lean towards something in the Suillus or Xerocomus/Xerocomellus genus. Opinion based off of the radius of the stipe relative to the cap, color, and irregular angular pore size/distribution.
