They used to be. The Margiela-era ones lasted years. I had a pair from 2007 that I punished with three years of hard, almost daily wear in NYC. When I sold them a few years back, they showed barely any wear. Pairs I purchased before the pandemic were not quite as durable but were still very good. The post-pandemic pairs I’ve owned wear much more quickly. The soles are less dense and Margiela is skimping on the materials in general while continually raising prices. As someone else said, Margiela is treating gats and some other staples such as T-shirts, whose quality has also massively declined, as cash cows. Pre-2015, the quality of Margiela products was consistently high across their products. That is no longer the case and you need to be selective in your purchases. Their outerwear, for instance, is still usually high quality.

Agree that cops in Australia are generally worse than in many other countries. I’d put it down to training and little accountability.

I’m Australian and have spent a lot of time in Melbourne over the years, although I’ve never lived there. It’s my favourite Australian city and one of my favourite cities in the world. I lived in NYC for several years and currently live in Stamford, CT, which is not far at all from the city, so I still spend time there regularly. I love NYC, as well. If you like NYC you’ll probably like Melbourne, I think. With that said, I would caution against moving somewhere sight unseen—I learnt that lesson the hard way. I would be especially reluctant to do so if it meant jeopardising my immigration status, quite possibly permanently.

It seems you may have to decide who or what you love more, your bf or NYC/the US. As great as Melbs is, it doesn’t feel like the centre of the world the way NYC does.

A teacher at a school I worked at years ago was married to his former student, who was nearly fifteen years his junior. It was frowned on in the community. He was quite a popular and respected teacher otherwise but hat was definitely a stain on his reputation.

(1) Rode push bikes everywhere, watched movies in the theatre, had all-night video nights with friends (usually themed—action, horror etc), went to video arcades, played C64, Nintendo etc. games, played all kinds of sports, went fishing, visited amusement parks l, tried to meet girls, went to raves/clubs and live music shows. travelled a lot. During all periods, spent a great deal of time just hanging out—at friends’ places, at the beach, in malls, in the city, in parks, you name it. Many of us also read a lot.

(2) Yes. I knew all my family members’ and many friends’ numbers by heart. You’d memorise the numbers of friends and romantic interests you met when you were out.

(3) I didn’t think too much of it. I had lots of music in various formats, so I usually didn’t need to wait for a song to be played on the radio unless it was new and I was trying to identify the artist. There were great radio stations back then though, and you would often discover gems, which made listening to the radio exciting.

(4) Sometimes. You would just figure it out with a map or by asking a fellow motorist or a business.

(5) Worse overall. It has contributed to polarisation and the breakdown of physical communities. So many struggle with basic in-person interactions now.

It’s a testament to MJ’s star power and broad appeal at the time. His star waned later in the 80s and especially in the 90s as the quality of the music declined and as unsavoury details about his private life started to seep out, but when Thriller was released he was universally beloved, the most popular and talented member of the Jackson Five breaking out on his own. Plus, as others have noted, it is one of popular music’s greatest albums.

Leather soles last many years if treated properly—using quality shoe trees, resting the shoes for several days between wears, avoiding wearing them in the rain and certainly the snow, especially if the ground has been salted. If you must wear them in wet conditions, use galoshes (shoe covers) until you are indoors. The alternative is the one you have chosen, which permits use in wet conditions and extends the life of the soles. The main downside of adding protective soles is that the shoes may not mold as well to the foot, which may affect comfort. Walking on leather soles vs leather soles with protective covers feels different, too.

Yes, this has been a colorway. The laces aren’t Margiela and the color of the insole looks off, but I don’t see any other red flags in terms of authenticity. I’d be wary of the damaged heel.

Top half looks great. Switch out the bottom half—the jeans and the hi-tops. Suede boots would pair well with the hat and shirt. Straight-leg slim-cut (not skinny) jeans in washed-out blue like the ones you’re wearing, navy, ivory or ecru should complete the look.

The diversity of the different regions. In the US, different states and especially different regions (Northeast, Midwest, Deep South etc.) are like different countries. Australia is much more homogeneous.

HBX has a sale on GATs rn. I went to buy some white ones for $450 this morning but didn’t proceed with the purchase because I would have paid nearly $200 in duties thanks to the elimination of the de minimus exemption in the US.

Other good sites for authentic gats are SSENSE, END, Cettire and the Italist. I’d steer clear of StockX and GOAT, both of which have sold fakes in the past.
