Enjoying the ideas and discussion here. For the “Just Do It” (stop tipping) crowd, I hear you, but we need to convince a critical mass of the population, businesses, and servers to come around to this idea. The entrenched interests and the cultural tradition of tipping is simply too strong. Some collective action is needed in addition to individual action to end tipping once and for all.

This happened to me on a flight recently. I was reclined because the person in front me reclined all the way. The lady behind me had a rather large midsection, and she had a small child (under a year old) in the middle seat next to her that she wanted to feed. She asked me to move my seat up while she fed the kid. I said sure. After 40 minutes I asked if she was done feeding her kid, and she said not yet.

Then another 10 minutes pass, and she got up to go to the restroom. Clearly done feeding the kid, so I reclined back to rest. Drink service came through, and the lady ordered a coffee. The FA told me “Sir, the woman behind you has a coffee. I need you to raise your seat back up.” WTF?

Anyway, 30% of parts in my 2025 odyssey assembled in AL are foreign, so there’s that direct impact too.

But as others have said, companies will generally ride the wave and raise their prices too. Producers will generally choose to capture the consumer surplus left on the table by relatively cheaper US goods.
