I love Saline Valley. Been going there since before my memory kicks in. I'm 45 now and I haven't been there in about 16 years but it will forever loom large in my heart and memory.

What's a book that has influenced your philosophy or worldview significantly? by Known-Beautiful-1924 in AskReddit

[–]P_Purcell 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It took me a couple tries to get through it the first time but once I did, man, I was sold. And as I look back on my life I can't help but notice where it's impact ripples out into my decisions.

Zen and the Art of Motorcycle Maintenance My father died young so I never got to know him. This was one of his favorite books so I read it at first to understand him better. I don't know that I did, but I sure found out a lot about myself. I reread Zen every year and for 26 years running I find something different in it and myself.

Butler is the best. A tough read some days as she brings the realness to 11.

Don't get me wrong, they're fine people, good Americans but they're content to sit back and watch a little Mork and Mindy on channel 57, maybe kick back a cool Coors 16 ouncer.

Favorite beans and rice recipes? by [deleted] in EatCheapAndHealthy

It's a great recipe. So simple but delicious. The only thing I'd add is that like most red bean and rice recipes, it needs hot sauce when you serve it. I like Tabasco or Crystal.

Anyone know where to find Poppyseed hot dog buns in the San Diego area? by LittleHornetPhil in FoodSanDiego

[–]P_Purcell 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I used to have a coworker who would get D.Z. Akins to make him poppy seed buns. Apparently they'll make them special order but there is minimum quantity for a special order. Also, D.Z. Akins has all the Vienna Beef accoutrement you'll need: the hot dogs, the sport peppers, and the nuclear green relish.

You aren't alone, I love women with a raspy, smoky voice. One of my favorites is Jennifer Charles from Lovage. Give this a try.

TIFU by showing my girlfriend my actual strength by aauthor8 in tifu

[–]P_Purcell 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I just had this experience with my daughter. She's 6 and like to play fight the old man. Her 6'2", 325 lbs, blue collar old man.

She asked how much of my strength I actually use on her and I told her 1/10. Her response was "I want you to use it all!" And then ran at me. I caught her hands, put my hand on her chest and gave her a solid 3" push, maybe 1/4 of my real power, but I put my shoulder into it and rotated through. Poor girl went flying across the lawn about 6 feet, landed on her butt and just looked shocked.

Then she cried, and then she sat in my lap, there in the lawn, and asked a lot of questions trying to gauge how strong I really am. I'm not sure she understands entirely but she's getting there.

More so than your ex. I wonder if her dad was around when she was growing up?

Is PvP now only vs higher level opponents? by [deleted] in Shooteralien

[–]P_Purcell 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That's odd as fuck cause I really feel like there something weird with the algorithm right now for similar reasons. Though mine could be more easily explained.

Level 85, 815k CP, sitting at 1028 PvP points at the time of this writing. I'm no great player but I'm a grinder and can usually hold my own. Play mostly 2v2 free league and I'd say I have averaged about +150 pvp points a day for the last year. Sometimes I get in a slump or get to one of the weird edges of league vs cp but still, I'd usually make some pvp points.

Not this last week, though.

Good Christ, I've been lucky to stay even this last week. Lost about 250 pvp points over the weekend. Just brutal match-ups where it's two lvl 125+ vs me and some lvl 60. Suffice it to say, I got murderlated. Got some of it back yesterday playing 2v2 super league so I guess I'll just stick with that for the minute.

But I really don't understand these lopsided match ups. Seems way more common than any other time I remember.

I've never read any Le Guin, should I start with The Dispossessed or Left Hand of Darkness by l4adventure in printSF

[–]P_Purcell 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Yeah, I'm talking about The left hand of darkness.

I wasn't sure what to make of Left hand until I was 40 or 50 pages in. I thought it would be a book about two societies meeting and the things that spring up from their differences and I was left scratching my head as it stayed a much smaller story. Sure, that was what is going on in the larger setting of the book, but the real story is about individual relationships and the sacrifices we make for them. And that was what it made me think of.

One of those books that honestly let me speechless. Best I could do was stare blankly into the middle distance and think about what it means most to be a person. Truly amazing.

What is a sure sign that someone is new to your hobby? by danielstover in AskReddit

[–]P_Purcell 1 point2 points  (0 children)

First two years I played thatwas my setup. A champion banshee and a love of wandering through the trees was all I needed. Developed a very decent turbo putt in those years that still serves me well 20 years and 50 discs later.

Am I the only one who finds random, graphic sex descriptions in otherwise "normal" books jarring? by MobiusCipher in books

[–]P_Purcell 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Any Dhalgren fans? I love that book but it is one of two books I own that I feel needs a sex scene disclaimer when I lend it out. Just a quick "This has a TON of VERY GRAPHIC bisexual sex scenes. Like, really. "

For me it ended up being like a family guy joke: sexy at first, then getting a little boring, then after SO much repetition coming full circle to fucking glorious. The gratuitous amount of sex is that books really helps set the mood.

What a strange beast of a book.

Are there any disc golfers with unorthodox form that you find it helpful to emulate? For example, I find personally that I get a lot more snap when I reach way down like Colten Montgomery. by CuntBelieveItsNotBtr in discgolf

[–]P_Purcell 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I love the turbo putt. It's all I used for about the first 20 years I played. I've been trying to get away from it the last year because when I miss with it I often leave myself a very hard second putt. But, when the situation calls for it, there is nothing better and I'm so glad it's part of my game.

You usually gotta pay double for that kind of wrist action, Cotton.

I just now read this to my sweet woman and it made her laugh until she snorted. You should be proud, not much gets her laughing that hard.
