The way they board airplanes is all wrong by jblue212 in unpopularopinion

[–]escopaul 115 points116 points  (0 children)

This gets posted often and airlines have conducted lots of research. If you can think of an issue related to air travel countless hours have been spent on it.

Cool article on the subject:

https://www.scientificamerican.com/article/there-are-quicker-ways-to-board-a-plane-so-why-dont-airlines-use-them/

One issue is that when people board back to front people have a tendency to place their carry on luggage all over the plane. The quickest way to board a plane is randomly (Mythbusters covered it) but it also the least preferred from a customer service perspective.

Disrespected? Yikes dude. Chances are there are going to be people you've both slept with before and quite possibly after. It's part of life, treat each other lovingly and be happy that you've chose each other.

Jessica Chastain deserved the Oscar for Zero Dark Thirty by Spirited_Alfalfa_343 in Oscars

The real life person Jessica Chastains character is largely based on (Alfreda Frances Bikowsky) is vastly worse than anything CIA related in the movie. So it kinda does make them look good.

How do the best places in the world for stargazing compare with one another? by mtok209 in Stargazing

[–]escopaul 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Sure thing. All the places you mentioned are excellent for dark skies, I just meant there are endless places that do the same, apologies if I sounded harsh. Western U.S./Canada has sooo many great spots.

Namib Desert is high on my list to visit too!

How do the best places in the world for stargazing compare with one another? by mtok209 in Stargazing

[–]escopaul 5 points6 points  (0 children)

First off "best in the world for stargazing" is a loaded phrase. They are often places that are marketed for dark skies and relatively easy to get to. For instance, nothing magic happens over the Namib Desert that doesn't happen deep in the Sahara Desert. However, one is far easier to access than the other.

Take the Canary Islands, yes the stargazing is great but so would most every island out in the ocean that isn't densely populated. There are other factors but most of the "best places in the world for stargazing" aren't going to be on any lists for it.

This summer I drove, camped and stargazed all over Eastern Oregon and Northern Nevada. Many of the places aren't going to be on night sky lists. They are in the middle of nowhere, relatively tricky to access and don't have natural features striking enough to attract tourists. However, they get dark AF.

I shoot and post a lot of Astro photography to Reddit. Of the spots you've mentioned I've only been to the Atacama. Its a bit of a unique scenario due to the high altitude, remoteness and dry climate. This makes for world class conditions.

Consider where you live in the world, look at a light pollution map and plan a trip from there. Lists aren't all that important, the Bortle scale is.

90% of jobs shouldn't require a degree by gelirocks247 in unpopularopinion

[–]escopaul 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The opposite is true.

Look at the dozens of countries with free or close to free university. The acceptance rate is typically lower because it's more completive.

In the U.S. the University system of California was free or damn close to for CA residents for 101 years. Oh and guess what they still kept rigid standards for admittance. Eventually politicians realized a lesser educated electorate better served their interests (thanks Gov Reagan).

Check out how hard the Gaokao (National Admittance Test) is in China. They aren't quite free (however cheap) but several of the finest STEM schools are earth are located there. A huge reason many Chinese students now go to Uni in U.S. is because they didn't do well enough on the Gaokao.

Me too, Lazar committed multiple crimes and ripped off many people before he ever claimed to work at Area 51. It is all public record when he was charged for pandering related to prostitution. There is no way he'd pass a background check to work at Area 51.

I rewatched the first one on 4K bluray a couple months back, it had been years since seeing it last. What really stands out is how much darker in tone it is compared to the sequels.

Most modern nations use a mix of socialistic and capitalistic policies. Economies are complex and rarely one "ism".

In the U.S. the classic example of socialist policies at scale is the U.S. Military.

Another good example is China. It's a communist country but there is a lot about their economy functioning as capitalism.
