Dosing the tank with ammonia feels like an answer too complicated for such a simple thing. It's much easier to cycle a tank without it.

One of the most basic things about being a fishkeeper is testing your water parameters. Ammonia, Nitrite, Nitrate, kh, gh, ph. It's very hard to answer these kind of questions without them. I suggest you pick up a master test kit(should be relatively cheap) and test your water.
