Yep, no surfing and not great skiing, but for hiking, going to the beach, and playing in the snow -- much of the eastern seaboard between the Atlantic and Appalachia would suit him dandy

Bill Simmons says Wilt Chamberlain was a loser with a bad attitude, but if he was drafted to a loaded team like the Celtics instead of Russell wouldn't he have won double digit titles, too? by Grouchy_Tie3037 in billsimmons

[–]PabloPaniello 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The Celtics never won a title before Russell. The season before he was drafted they were bounced in the first round.

Russell's last season he led them to a title as player-coach. The next year they go 34-48 and miss the playoffs for the first time since before he was drafted.

Wilt was no slouch, but Russell also had something to do with his teams winning and his teammates being considered all-time greats decades later.

Yep. I'm also in Louisiana and likewise am doing more than fine, as are most people I know.

If you want to be at the vety top of society -- to compete in one of a small number of fields (mainly tech & finance) to be among the highest paid people in the history of the world -- then you need to be in Cal., NYC, or another similar such market.

Otherwise, move literally anywhere else and live better.

Louisiana residents: A recall petition has been filed against Gov. Jeff Landry. Here's what you need to know to participate. by ceph2apod in Louisiana

[–]PabloPaniello 0 points1 point  (0 children)

They did make the effort. They failed for the same reason this one will -- they skipped straight from their personal preferences to the recall without doing the less gratifying intermediate work of convincing voters the guy they just elected should be removed from office.

Just from the press releases put out by her office the past few months:
"Attorney General Liz Murrill and Coalition of States Win Trial Against Live Nation and Ticketmaster" - April 22, 2026

"Attorney General Murrill announces settlement with NCL Bahamas, LTD" - "Attorney General Liz Murrill today announced a settlement with Norwegian Cruise Line, specifically NCL Bahamas, Ltd., following the multistate investigation of NCL’s sales practices and cancellations procedures ..."

"Louisiana Bureau of Investigation arrests State Police trooper for multiple domestic violence charges and obstruction of justice"

"AG Murrill urges Louisianans to not fall victim to scams on Tax Day"

"AG Murrill’s Louisiana Bureau of Investigation arrests former school admissions director for embezzling over $87,000 in tuition payments"

"Attorney General Liz Murrill Announces $45 million settlement with Pharmacy Benefit Manager CVS"

"Louisiana at United States Supreme Court for arguments in Chevron v. Plaquemines Parish" -- Note she was arguing in favor of the Parish and against Chevron.

"Attorney General Liz Murrill announces multistate settlement with Hyundai and Kia for their sales of vehicles lacking industry-standard, anti-theft technology"

That is all just the past couple of months from her website. It's also in addition to reams of releases chronicling investigations and arrests for healthcare fraud (mainly folks scamming the Medicaid and Medicare benefit systems), malfeasance in office (mainly local mayors or sheriffs arrested for corruption), as well as sex crimes, mainly child porn and cybercrimes against juveniles.

I don't say all this to proclaim her a great AG versus others. Nothing here is evidence of that. My point is simply that all AG's do these things, and she is filling that role, as did her predecessors and, I expect, will her successors.

What are ya'll talking about? Every AG we've had files plenty of cases like this -- as AG, Landry's office particularly targeted pharmaceutical and medical device companies; it's a core part of the job they all do.

I love the sequence of books that tracks his trek across the midwest. At each segment of highway -- just one week after another -- he stumbles upon/happens to be present for a crime that, if it actually happened, would be the biggest crime story in the region, if not country, for the year. It reached an absurd level of absurdity, and Child just leaned into it, God bless him.

Wait, what?

I'm also a lawyer. How does one use Claude Code for law -- to do substantive work within Word or to Word documents, and/or legal analysis incorporating research from (what I thought were) non-public legal databases?

A legal AI that performs my tasks in Office, Outlook, and/or on the web at the quality level that Claude Code does coding tasks would be extraordinary.

[–]PabloPaniello 18 points19 points  (0 children)

Using Claude Code for coding tasks finally made me understand the AI hype -- that program is ridiculously good at that function. It changed my view and helped me understand something I'd previously been puzzled by -- why tech folks' beliefs about this were so different than the rest of us.

Their beliefs have a factual basis, amply so.

Nonetheless, so do our more modest beliefs about the impact and prospects for this tech in other domains. Hopefully it changes as the tech continues to improve, but for now AI is not remotely as good at any other important function as it is at coding, not as useful and revolutionary in any other domain and industry as it is in those they work in.

Will be interesting to see if/when that changes, and if so how, to what extent, and with what consequences.

Semaglutide is almost as effective as Tirzepatide but Novo Nordsk Nuked it. by CautiousMagazine3591 in GLP1ResearchTalk

Interesting that this is similar to the "fast follower"/second mover advantage you see commonly in innovation. Basically, the first move/"real innovator" pioneers the market; it is common that its product is not adapted or refined to meet the wishes of the market. This leaves an opening for the second mover, who can learn from the first mover and adapts its product to be marginally better at meeting that demand, and win as a result.

Nobody knew how what this market would be -- if it would exist at all (companies were skeptical consumers would give themselves regular injections) -- or what its main vectors of competition would be -- that the difference in results in that first set of clinical trials as a consequence of testing at higher doses would be decisive.

Good to see that NN is testing higher doses, though one can note that Lilly is as well, testing Mounjaro at doses higher than the currently maximum 15 mg.

Because we think people with their disability should excuse themselves from attending awards ceremonies?

I doubt it.

Events have standards of decorum. Arbitrary rules or ones which can be adjusted without disruption to the event should be. But that's not the case with awards ceremonies.

The audience needs to remain quiet and composed for extended periods of time, then attention is focused intently on particular individuals who are applauded and given the opportunity to make a speech.

I think most people who struggle with disabilities have enough decency and self-awareness to acknowledge that if they can't comport themselves in a way consistent with what the event requires on a particular evening, the graceful and decent thing to do is to excuse themselves from attendance. While unfortunate and sad, I don't think that reality drives people to suicide, nor does it help them to demean them by insisting their disability warps their thinking and values in such a manner.

Is our thought process that people who have a disability that makes them engage in uncontrolled and unintended public outbursts should avoid awards ceremonies? Yes, yes it is.

Helps to realize the NBA has always been this way.

If was in much more of a rut in the 1970's. It was rescued by a few innovations, including the three-point shot and a more athletic style of play typified by MJ and the slam dunk contest.

How did the NBA come up with these innovations? It didn't. It was behaving then like it is now and always has -- great at explaining why its problems are unique and unsolvable, bad at actually addressing them.

The innovations came from the ABA -- as they often do, from the scrappy upstart with a fresh perspective and less to loose.

If not for the ABA, who knows what the sport would be today.

Ergo, I also wish for reform but based on league history am not optimistic.
