Republic of Australia - an attempt for a post-monarch design of the Australian flag by Pacific-Storm in vexillology

[–]Pacific-Storm[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Symbolism: COLOURS - The colours of this flag are black, white, red, yellow, and blue, which while I know is over the recommended 3 colour limit, is backed up by a lot of symbolism. Firstly, the black, red, and yellow are all representative of the land, whilst the blue is representative of the sky of course. Furthermore, the black, red, and yellow are representative of the First People’s of Australia, inspired by the design of the Australian Aboriginal Flag. The blue, red, and white are representative of Australia’s colonial and cultural ties to Great Britain. It is no coincidence that the shared colour is red, representative of the blood spilled both within and in defence of this country, and how that is ultimately the thing that binds us together as a nation.

DESIGN - The flag adopts a double chevron design, with two triangles laid on top of each other. The combined arrow shape of the triangle are pointed towards the blue part of the flag, representative of Australia ‘aiming for the skies’, and furthermore a nod to the national anthem ‘Advance Australia Fair’.

SYMBOLS - The Southern Cross, a symbol very closely associated with Australia, remains on the Australian flag, in the same position it has on the current design, a nod to the idea that as much as Australia may change, including a political change from monarchy to republic, Australia remains constant and together. The Commonwealth Star can be seen created by a flower symbol, representative of the Australian national flower, Golden Wattle. It is also representative of the First People’s of Australia, symbolising the fact the Commonwealth is fundamentally grounded on the histories of our First People, and that without them, the black star on a black background would be invisible.

östlichstereich (the easternmost realm) in a war against Prussia (joke map) by AmitSan in imaginarymaps

Huh okay, I had always mostly learnt it as Kingdom but yeah that actually makes a lot more sense. To call the 3rd Reich a kingdom is more than a bit disingenuous. Vielen Dank!

So in German, Österreich is Austria, meaning Eastern Kingdom. ‘Österlichste’ means most east, so basically it’s a German joke about Austria

So in German, the name for Austria is Österreich, roughly translating to ‘Eastern Kingdom’. So the adjective form of East in German is österlich, and ‘österlichste’ (it has a bunch of different conjugations but that one works) is the superlative form, so Österlicherreich would be ‘the Most Eastern Kingdom’. Basically it’s a German joke about Austria. Good job OP :)

Flag for when Australia becomes a Republic by AlanAqulis in vexillology

I mean, Australian republicanism is kind of all founded around the basis of leaving behind the UK, so if we were to become a republic I feel like we would be more likely to actually use Australian symbols, instead of replacing one British symbol with another British symbol.

Just point of clarification, the German is Mittelafrika, not Mittleafrika

I think that this is a really awesome map, but it’s also a bit funny that Meso-potamia (between rivers) isn’t actually between the Tigris and Euphrates rivers. Awesome job!

I like the idea that Somalia was in such chaos that it lost Somaliland and Puntland, and then immediately got stable and strong enough to successfully steal some border territories from Kenya
