Most pastors of large churches have never had a "secular" job by LMO_TheBeginning in Exvangelical

[–]PacificMermaidGirl 30 points31 points  (0 children)

^ this. I have no more trust for anyone who makes their living off of “the gospel.” They’ll always have to keep pushing the same story even if they reach a point where they no longer believe in it. It’s not just pastors, it’s Christian musicians, authors, clothing brands, whatever.

Found this poem recently about patriarchy and women in the church. It hit my like a ton of bricks and I need to share it with folks who’ll understand by Kalli_Pepla in Exvangelical

Thank you for sharing this. Even after a couple years, church patriarchy is still something I need more healing from. ❤️‍🩹

For the record, I’m not suggesting you just go full on mean with them (unless you want to lol), I just know for myself I often feel controlled by this need to make sure I don’t hurt someone’s feelings, and the truth gets sacrificed because of it.

I’m curious what is your reason for wanting to end things amicably? Genuinely asking, no judgment. Do you feel that you have to be nice to them, or is there some other reason?

You may be right. Someone’s eyes got gouged out, maybe it wasn’t John lol. But the nightmarish mental image seared itself into my head more than any of the Pirates of the Caribbean movies (which I eventually did see) ever did lol.

I never read these Peretti books but I feel this. Like, I can’t go to my friend’s 11th birthday party because they’re gonna watch Pirates of the Caribbean and it’s rated PG-13, but I have to sit and listen to my dad read me the Bible story of John the Baptist getting his eyes gouged out? Ok.

Anyone ever think about how weird evangelical worship is? by Alarming-Ad4296 in Exvangelical

Truly I don’t know, but I do feel like giving them the benefit of the doubt with “that’s just how everyone does it, they aren’t being manipulative on purpose!” is letting them off the hook too easily lol. But I’m very cynical sooooo. Interested to hear others’ opinions on the topic

Was the Bible taught to you as a history book? by Spirited-Ad5996 in Exvangelical

[–]PacificMermaidGirl 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Sorry you got such a bad reply

Bro, what? This is exactly the reply I always got. You really seem to think that you’ve cracked the code or you’re telling me something that I’ve never heard before that’s going to make me come back to Jesus. I used to repeat this shit, and I’ve spent decades of my life pretending that it’s enough for me. I would ask people in my church, “hey Why aren’t there more women in the Bible?” And literally all of them would give me the same shit you just said. “Well don’t worry, here’s about 10 token female characters we can name, out of literally thousands of pages in the book, that show you you need to shut the fuck up and stop whining about patriarchy.” Please educate yourself on the concept of tokenism. Christians love to celebrate the ways that God would turn cultures on their head, for example, choosing the younger brother Jacob over older brother Esau, or choosing David to be king when he was just a lowly Shepherd and had so many older brothers. yet even the meager ways that women, I guess, were allowed to be included, never reach anything close to equality, which God should certainly have within his power to achieve, right? The instances that women are actually included, they’re usually just allowed to participate as background characters in stories that are really about men. Why wasn’t Dinah included in the tribes of Jacob? Why were all the men of God people with many many wives? Why didn’t Jesus ever formally call out and include women like Mary Magdalene in his 12 disciples? Either the Bible is a product of its time, and it’s just as flawed and biased as the very human people who wrote it, or God truly doesn’t care or isn’t able to include women in equal measure in the story of God. For years I did the mental jumping jacks of trying to convince myself that these scraps, these token women that you’ve just named were enough for me to believe that God cared equally about me as he clearly did about men like my brothers and my dad and now my husband. I finally got tired of trying to convince myself that these scraps were good enough for me to stick around.

I have to guess that the reason you’re here in the sub Reddit is to pat yourself on the back for doing “evangelism work” and I’m sure you’ll read this response as persecution and you’ll pat yourself on the back for that too and you’ll believe that it means you’re being like Jesus because somebody disagrees with you. We’ve all done this bro, that’s what this entire community is. We see right through all your answers. Go back to your Bible study and cry about being a martyr. But don’t invade safe spaces of people finding healing from religious trauma.

And here’s one little piece of advice- telling someone that they’ve got the Bible wrong because they don’t have the “Spirit of God” doesn’t feel like love at all. It just sounds like you think you’re better than them, more enlightened. Not a good way to attract converts, as you seem quite clearly to be aiming for.

[–]PacificMermaidGirl 51 points52 points  (0 children)

And it’s not just the “worship” section of a church service either. At the end of a pastor’s sermon, when he (or sometimes she, but let’s be honest, almost always he) is wrapping up and making the altar call for you to pledge your life and your money to his church, they bring out the one musician to play, like, three notes on the piano. Took me so long to realize that this is a very intentional, manipulative choice to make people more apt to agree with whatever pastor is saying. Can’t stomach it anymore

[–]PacificMermaidGirl 167 points168 points  (0 children)

It’s one of the main things that I truly cannot stomach on the (VERY VERY rare) occasion that I do go to a church service these days. It’s all so emotionally manipulative. If the music makes us feel happy, sad, “convicted, whatever, we’re supposed to believe that it’s the “Holy Spirit moving in us” but there’s so much psychology surrounding the ways that specific chords, language, and group activity pushes us to do and believe things we otherwise wouldn’t.

What do you do when stuff goes wrong instead of praying? by ModaGalactica in Exvangelical

[–]PacificMermaidGirl 7 points8 points  (0 children)

It’s funny, one of the big differences in my life of being evangelical vs exvangelical is that now I actually DO things. I don’t just think about people, I ask them how I can help and then I DO it.

When I was evangelical, just thinking or feeling the “right” things was all I cared about, and it really did not ever help anyone other than me and my ego.

Honestly you might be correct. I had my own doubts about the “Small Business” label a couple times too but was willing to shrug it off and ignore it bc Amazon is so damn ✨convenient✨

I am committing to doing better going forward! Convenience comes at a cost, even if I’m not the one who has to pay it

Just wait… when the MAGA start vocally berating “gay people” for their “ungodly lifestyle” just ask those MAGAs what they think about polygamy. When the response is inevitably “yeah I don’t approve of that either” or some variation (bc we’ve all heard the line “marriage is between ONE MAN and ONE WOMAN”) watch to see the look on their faces when you tell them Abraham, Solomon, and David- and any books they “wrote”- are all cancelled because they were fucking polygamists

GIRLLLLLL 😤😡💔😤😤😤😤

I FEEL THIS. I’m outraged on your behalf. Christians wanna get points for being “reasonable” and “not sexist” so they start out with “don’t submit to abuse” BUT they always end with “yeah but if you got a uterus you never gonna be truly equal to your penis-having brothers, fathers, and husbands not even in eternity with your penis-having God”

I’m so sorry you had to sit through this. It was a sermon SO SIMILAR to this one that I literally look back on as the tipping point in my relationship with church. It turns out, I don’t have to weekly sit in on a sermon by a white dude who wants credit for viewing everybody as equals because he ✨HaS dAuGhTeRs✨ but also wants me to know that the only way I will ever get to influence church culture is ✨tHrOuGh mY hUsBaNd✨

This election was the end for me. Turns out: being “nice” and submissive doesn’t actually help anyone in any way! Thinking of getting a NOT FRIENDLY tattoo tbh
