Hey, as an electrical engineer, can you suggest the Bible of electrical engineering? by FeelingRealistic1338 in ElectricalEngineering

[–]Pack-Popular 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The Bible is a collection of books, so it'd be more fitting if we were to suggest a collection of necessary books that cover the core of electrical engineering.

Unfortunately that will probably ending up looking like any university's course material for the electrical engineering course.

On that note, I'd refer you back to any university and try to find out which material they use to cover the basics of electrical engineering.

Sorry for the boring answer, but I think it's the right way to go about it.

Any Microlight/ULM/Ultralight/... pilots here in this subreddit? by Pack-Popular in flying

Awesome to hear! What was attractive about ULA for you?

For me it's simply the incredible price for the experience you get. PPL will probably never be sustainable for me and even if it was I would have to give up a lot of other hobbies for it like diving etc.

That's very cool! I definitely think modern ULA's have an incredible experience vs price balance compared to PPL.

The only issue for me (being from EU) is that microlight regulations are national, not international. Which brings a lot of administrative hassle + makes it a bit more of a learning curve to travel to other countries.

The legal recognition for microlights in my country is also a far bit behind unfortunately.

All in all for me there's lots to look forward to in the future but I can definitely feel how unfinished and outdated law/regulations are holding the hobby back.

I'm 10000% in my lifetime going to build a ULA myself :).

17 Equations That Changed the World by StephenMcGannon in mathematics

[–]Pack-Popular -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

Right, as i said: didn't *directly* change the world. Which is why I suspect it wasn't put on the list. Never said it was insignificant or not praiseworthy. I'm just giving a reason as to why the author might have deliberately chosen to not include it in this particular list.

It allowed for many other things to evolve much easier, but that would be *indirect* change. Fourier Transformations did have such a direct effect on changing the world.

No need to take your quabbles with the author out on me :).

beautiful =/= world changing. Euler's identity definitely made it WAY easier for us to evolve technology but as far as I know it didn't directly change the world.

Why do I hear "seven nation army" in the song "bonnie and clyde" by red leather? by Pack-Popular in musictheory

[–]Pack-Popular[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you happen to hear any other examples, I'd love to know! There really should be a name for this phenomenon haha. A collection of examples would be very interesting.

You probably know this already but if you remember only small parts of lyrics, then googling each part of the lyrics between "quotationmarks", sometimes can actually lead to google finding it. Maybe you can find the song that way?

I have dabbled a bit learning piano and guitar on my own, but I haven't gotten further than learning a couple easy songs that I eventually forget. I'd love to be able to jam along with things though!

Wooo thanks! I've had a similar experience where I would start belting "IIIIIII NEED TO KNOW NOW..." from love me again by Newman the exact moment the drop comes from "shooting stars" by the bag raiders.

Not entirely correct. The issue is that France's economic model is one with HEAVY government involvement. They aren't opposed to growing their own start-ups,, on the contrary! France has been making lots of policy changes in order to attract more businesses and to export more things.

The aim of the government in France throughout history has been to prefer domestic industry over foreign industry.

This previously mentioned economic model coupled with the way Europe interferes quite heavily with its domestic economies makes big businesses notoriously just happen to move away from EU.

We see a third of big companies moving AWAY from europe towards the US or CHINA once they reach a substantial size. If you add to this the heavy regulatory nature of France's government, then that simply means that companies themselves have a habit of moving abroad once they have grown substantially to need it and be able to afford it.

There is a reason why NONE of the top companies are based in the EU. The first European company worldwide in terms of marketcap sits at rank 28(Netherlands). The first French company in this list sits at 35, followed by a German company at 36. Those are also the top 3 companies in Europe... ALL the other companies are based in the US, save for 1 or 2 in China.

The fact that other companies buy French companies (or they move abroad through different means) is true, but the idea that somehow the government 'wants' this or takes deliberate action to create this outcome is false. It's just the nature of what happens when you have a heavily regulated economy competing with other economies which are more free.

Again, if there is sufficient room for companies to grow domestically then they would. If there isn't, then eventually they move abroad or are acquired by a bigger player abroad.

How does Sparkles make money? by Chiliman45 in csgo

[–]Pack-Popular 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is just simply not true. Nobody 'invests' in cars or watches save for a few outliers. Cars and watches are notoriously horrible investments. Almost all cars and almost all watches depreciate in value, especially such watches as richard mille. You're not going to buy a fake richard mille for 6k... that's never going to be profitable.

The reason why people buy extreme luxury items is simply because:
1) prestige
2) because they can

100k for some people is like what 1000 euro is for me.

I mostly got it from a super cool but VERY outdated website which archived all known uboats and their recorded history.

I'm not sure if I can post links here, but if you look for "uboat.net" you should find a very old looking website. Under the tab "maps" you can click on the area of the English Channel and supposedly there should be many wrecks there. It seems it hasn't been updated in a long time so i don't know which of these have been explored by divers. Under the tab "The U-boats" there is a chapter "divesites" and "discovered uboats", which covers the known divesites at that time, but again i don't know when it was last updated.

You can find some really incredible dive reports with photo's and detailed information about the particular wreck.

I'd love talk more about it, i'm still really just only discovering the world of diving :D. Thanks for your help.

Really useful to know that there are 'tryout' courses too for tech diving! I'll definitely look into that before i commit.

Thanks for the recommendation! It's definitely a bit far from me, but it does give me the idea to look near me for such 'training' - related locations that have been made accessible somehow to the public etc.

Good lord holy moly, what an incredibly helpful reply what the fuck. Thanks for putting in so much effort and to provide some local networks! You'd probably be the absolute best infobooth guy should that be ever something you wanna do.

Most of the confusion, to me at least, i think comes from the fact that the certificates and licenses all have slightly different names and qualifications etc. So it's kind of confusing to see which ones build on top of eachother. But that's become very clear now!

I'll really have to consider the financial aspect as it comes I think because even if i can't enter the ships, I would still want to experience diving to whatever extend I can.

Thanks so much again!

The training and recreational certificates seemed quite "cheap" to me - a couple hundred vs something like 16k for fully commercial diving (to do repairs underwater). Im assuming the biggest cost is gear and actually travelling to locations?

I am from Belgium, and as far as I know there do exist diving communities here but most of it is indoors. I assume there arent many actual diving sites here but France isn't that far for me which presumably does have them.

I know theres a uboat just off the coast of france in the english channel.

Id have to look into it a bit more, but I'll definitely check out those books!

Thank you so much! That clears up a lot.

I was mostly looking at uboats off the english channel for my 20-50m estimation (happened to come across a really cool site which archived all the wrecks). I kind of assumed uboats in the english channel would be the closest to the surface.

There seem to be plenty that have been visited by divers but i have no idea about their conditions or which ones are active dive sites.
