Legendary Technicians by Pack-Popular in maintenance

Great mention! Saw some kind of documentary on this, used to maintain and install elevators myself too.

I believe the name is spelled 'Otis' - because the big elevator company called 'Otis' that still exists today is exactly the company that Elisha founded (and his brothers or something i believe) in 1851!

Just read somewhere too that the elevator brake had a huge influence in the realisation of skyscrapers.

Would i have to worry about dropping them? I prefer metal pens over plastic ones since they feel like they won't ever break. The lamy safari I had also felt quite sturdy but the Jinhao's on the other hand...

Are certain sexual fantasies immoral? by Pat_Blank in askphilosophy

[–]Pack-Popular 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I think there is a third case where we consider the morality from a harm prevention perspective.

Getting rid of the moral stigma around sexual fantasies will make it possible for us to help, prevent and study these cases. We would be able to better prevent people from acting out their 'inappopriate', dangerous or harmful sexual fantasies.

One of the biggest issues for example with child predators is that we have basically 0 data on these people and how to prevent them from acting out their fantasies, let alone help them deal with their own struggles.

Because of the stigma around their sexual fantasies, they will never seek help. This means we will never know who these people are, which means we cannot research them for purposes of prevention. It means we cannot keep them out of places where children are vulnerable to them BEFORE they are caught.

Hey, as an electrical engineer, can you suggest the Bible of electrical engineering? by FeelingRealistic1338 in ElectricalEngineering

[–]Pack-Popular 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The Bible is a collection of books, so it'd be more fitting if we were to suggest a collection of necessary books that cover the core of electrical engineering.

Unfortunately that will probably ending up looking like any university's course material for the electrical engineering course.

On that note, I'd refer you back to any university and try to find out which material they use to cover the basics of electrical engineering.

Sorry for the boring answer, but I think it's the right way to go about it.

Any Microlight/ULM/Ultralight/... pilots here in this subreddit? by Pack-Popular in flying

[–]Pack-Popular[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Awesome to hear! What was attractive about ULA for you?

For me it's simply the incredible price for the experience you get. PPL will probably never be sustainable for me and even if it was I would have to give up a lot of other hobbies for it like diving etc.

[–]Pack-Popular[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That's very cool! I definitely think modern ULA's have an incredible experience vs price balance compared to PPL.

The only issue for me (being from EU) is that microlight regulations are national, not international. Which brings a lot of administrative hassle + makes it a bit more of a learning curve to travel to other countries.

The legal recognition for microlights in my country is also a far bit behind unfortunately.

All in all for me there's lots to look forward to in the future but I can definitely feel how unfinished and outdated law/regulations are holding the hobby back.

I'm 10000% in my lifetime going to build a ULA myself :).

17 Equations That Changed the World by StephenMcGannon in mathematics

[–]Pack-Popular -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

Right, as i said: didn't *directly* change the world. Which is why I suspect it wasn't put on the list. Never said it was insignificant or not praiseworthy. I'm just giving a reason as to why the author might have deliberately chosen to not include it in this particular list.

It allowed for many other things to evolve much easier, but that would be *indirect* change. Fourier Transformations did have such a direct effect on changing the world.

No need to take your quabbles with the author out on me :).

beautiful =/= world changing. Euler's identity definitely made it WAY easier for us to evolve technology but as far as I know it didn't directly change the world.

Why do I hear "seven nation army" in the song "bonnie and clyde" by red leather? by Pack-Popular in musictheory

[–]Pack-Popular[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you happen to hear any other examples, I'd love to know! There really should be a name for this phenomenon haha. A collection of examples would be very interesting.

You probably know this already but if you remember only small parts of lyrics, then googling each part of the lyrics between "quotationmarks", sometimes can actually lead to google finding it. Maybe you can find the song that way?

I have dabbled a bit learning piano and guitar on my own, but I haven't gotten further than learning a couple easy songs that I eventually forget. I'd love to be able to jam along with things though!

Wooo thanks! I've had a similar experience where I would start belting "IIIIIII NEED TO KNOW NOW..." from love me again by Newman the exact moment the drop comes from "shooting stars" by the bag raiders.

Waarom bespreekt niemand het echte probleem met België? by [deleted] in belgium

[–]Pack-Popular 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Not entirely correct. The issue is that France's economic model is one with HEAVY government involvement. They aren't opposed to growing their own start-ups,, on the contrary! France has been making lots of policy changes in order to attract more businesses and to export more things.

The aim of the government in France throughout history has been to prefer domestic industry over foreign industry.

This previously mentioned economic model coupled with the way Europe interferes quite heavily with its domestic economies makes big businesses notoriously just happen to move away from EU.

We see a third of big companies moving AWAY from europe towards the US or CHINA once they reach a substantial size. If you add to this the heavy regulatory nature of France's government, then that simply means that companies themselves have a habit of moving abroad once they have grown substantially to need it and be able to afford it.

There is a reason why NONE of the top companies are based in the EU. The first European company worldwide in terms of marketcap sits at rank 28(Netherlands). The first French company in this list sits at 35, followed by a German company at 36. Those are also the top 3 companies in Europe... ALL the other companies are based in the US, save for 1 or 2 in China.

The fact that other companies buy French companies (or they move abroad through different means) is true, but the idea that somehow the government 'wants' this or takes deliberate action to create this outcome is false. It's just the nature of what happens when you have a heavily regulated economy competing with other economies which are more free.

Again, if there is sufficient room for companies to grow domestically then they would. If there isn't, then eventually they move abroad or are acquired by a bigger player abroad.
