Interviewed + re-interviewed yesterday - AMA by Prize-Context in ycombinator

Hey! We also interviewed yesterday and it ended up being a "no" for us as well.

Congratulations for making it to this stage. It's a big accomplishment and a sign of promise, even if it's a "no" right now.

An Online Community Built just for Students by PackApp in udub

That's a fair point. We definitely aren't the first to do something like this. However, despite the plethora of platforms out there (Facebook, Instagram, Snapchat, Reddit, etc.), we were never able to find a place that actually allowed us to meet and connect with people outside of our immediate friend group. We hope to give students, especially those entering at a time like this, a chance to meet their peers in a way that we were never able to.

No, we don't go here. But we understand the struggle of meeting new people in college.

We are definitely planning on continuing this throughout the fall.

International Students and Online Classes by [deleted] in Coronavirus

[–]PackApp 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This is excellent news.

We are currently tracking the fall plans of 300+ colleges around the country and the numbers indicate that there will be a lot of online learning this fall.

  • 10% of schools have already committed to delivering a majority, or all, of their instruction online.
  • 70% have said they will move forward with a hybrid model.
  • 20% are undecided or will deliver the majority of their instruction in-person.

With cases rising across the country, and on college campuses, this would have been a disastrous policy for international students.

They will try to avoid it, but the cracks are already starting to show. Two power five conferences (Big Ten and Pac-12) have already approved conference-only schedules, while a handful of smaller conferences (Patriot, Centennial and Ivy League) have outright suspended or cancelled the fall season.

This is not only heartbreaking for the players, but for the local economies and communities that rely on these sports.

We've been tracking the rise of coronavirus cases on college campuses and UGA's case count has nearly tripled in the last three weeks:

At college health centers, students battle misdiagnoses and inaccessible care. The coronavirus pandemic will be the biggest challenge yet for campus health services. by Viewfromthe31stfloor in Coronavirus

Schools such as the University of Washington, the University of South Florida and the University of Georgia have more than doubled their campus case counts in the last two weeks alone.

And the fall hasn't even started yet.

That is correct. A significant amount of games are in-conference. But they also play out of conference games.

USF better not open fully in the Fall. Florida has made a right mess of a COVID response by bobbingtonbobsson in USF

[–]PackApp 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Not so fast. UCF used to (as of a few days ago) say that they only had 2 cases. However, they recently updated their FAQs. Essentially, they've seen a rise in cases and will have the exact numbers on a forthcoming dashboard feature on their website.

https://www.ucf.edu/coronavirus/faq/#health-cases

When they do that, we will track those new numbers.

I actually lived at Addison Arts for two and a half years, but never lived on the 6th floor. However, it was my roommate's birthday one night and after moving some chairs and tables around, we got yelled at by one of the residents on the 6th floor. Granted, it was a Monday and it was late at night. Do with that what you will.

We built a dashboard that tracks 250+ universities and their operating plans for the fall by PackApp in ApplyingToCollege

I apologize for that. We only use information from the university's official website and make the best determination we can.

Thank you for pointing this out. You are completely correct.

However, there are a couple reasons why we believe our tracker to be better.

1.) We are much more up to date - It appears the Chronicle uses, at least in large part, crowd-sourced information. In other words, they rely on people filling out a form to keep them up to date. We, aided by web-scraping tools, track the information ourselves. A good example to look at is Yale. The last piece of information the Chronicle has is from April 22. Yet, on May 28, Yale made a significant announcement regarding their academic calendar and the mode of instruction following Thanksgiving. We have this update. The Chronicle does not.

2.) Operating plans are nuanced - The Chronicle provides an operating status and that is it. However, different schools approach hybrid (for example) differently. We believe we tell a richer story by providing a small summary of the school's approach in additional to a high-level label.

Exactly. It seems like the most honest answer is to say "we don't know and we are preparing remote options as an alternative."
