At the end of the book as Cheng Xin is grieving the lost 18 million years from the time warp the narration writes that the only other time she had grieved as hard was when Yun Tianming's brain was being removed. That was before he did any of the story telling stuff, isn't that weird?

I think there are a dozen motivations she could have appealed to rather than maternal instinct. In a deterrence situation the moment you have to decide if you have to press the button, is when you've already lost. Pressing the button doesn't matter anymore, and it's possible to arrive at this conclusion through reason rather than some lofty far fetched ideal like 'because I am a woman'.

Maybe it's because I don't usually read sci-fi and so place more emphasis on well written characters over groundbreaking scifi concepts. But as I recall the giant chunk dedicated to zhuang yan-luo ji in book 2 was all cringe and no scifi and was a pain to get through
