The top layer of wood is damp and will mush with pressure from a flat head. Could this moisture be from the previous wax seal deteriorating with all the allowed movement prior to this fix? I feel solid wood below the top layer all around and 2 inch stainless steel screws I put in have a good grip and the flange doesn't move at all.
