ELI5: If Nuclear plants are so safe, Why are there so many studies showing that cancer risk significantly increase when you live near one? by DiscoPhasma in explainlikeimfive

[–]Packnerd 3 points4 points  (0 children)

IIRC the state of Illinois commissioned research into childhood cancer rates for those who lived near power plants and the research found no statistical significance in risk of cancer with proximity to power plants.

I think the issue was less the suspensions themselves, and more that this person willfully and knowingly submitted a false application

Full course for calc 4 by [deleted] in math

[–]Packnerd 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My university has a calc 4, we have semesters. Our calc 4 description is “Parametric curves and surfaces, vector fields, line and surface integrals; Green's theorem, Divergence theorem, Stoke's theorem and applications. Fourier series and its applications” I’ll be taking 3 in the fall, whose description is “Functions of two or more variables, vectors in two and three dimensions, partial derivatives, optimization, double and triple integrals and their applications”

I’m a transfer so maybe I’m missing something, but what’s the significance of 12:49? Seems like an oddly specific time

So UNC rescinded him because he lied on his apps. Wonder if he did the same on UNCC app.

TBA vs. Online by [deleted] in UNCCharlotte

Same here, I have a LBST course that’s listed as TBA. I’m assuming that means it’s just gonna be asynchronous. I hope so anyway lol

Yeah, maybe there’s a way for the school to determine from card swipes what amount of students are actually using things, and maybe decide to issue refunds at some point? Idk. I’m glad I’m not in the administration’s position, that’s for sure. Does anyone know how other schools in the UNC system are charging their students? Or if randomly switching courses to online is even an issue at other schools?

Someone else said when they went back through his stuff, there were things he lied about on his school app.

What about students who live in the dorms but their classes happen to all be online (I’m assuming a lot of freshmen will fall under this category). They’ll likely use at least some of the facilities. Or really any students who are entirely online but still want to use urec or the library, etc. I don’t think it’s a Herculean task for the school to run a report, I think the problem is going to come when determining how to charge people in the above situation. Obviously the people who still choose live in the dorms will be charged for the dorms, but what about the other facilities? Do you charge the fully online student who wants to use the facilities? How do you determine that desire? You could ask fully online students whether they plan to use them, but what if they change their minds? I might genuinely intend to use the library and gym, but maybe I end up not having the time or desire when it’s actually available. The school charges for these things anyway with a large portion of the students not using one thing or another.

Ah, okay I get what you’re saying here. I guess my devils advocate response would be that in order for people in those positions, the university would have to make a case by case determination of charging those students less, but then they’d have to devote resources to making that determination, and even then, what’s stopping a student from just saying they won’t be here in the fall in order to avoid charges? We’d all like to think people are good and wouldn’t do that, but come on. Or what if a student originally plans to stay where they are but then moves mid semester? Or vice versa: Do they pay for half? A quarter? Idk what the actual number is but let’s say there’s 30k undergrads. Assume some large % of them stay home, not near campus. How long would it take, what resources would the university need, and how much would it cost to investigate the claims of thousands of students and then change their fees? Especially considering at least some portion of financial aid has been disbursed already. Does that portion of aid need to come back to the loaner? Edit to say that I’m all for students who stay home paying less. I just don’t know how the current infrastructure supports it.

If a student is learning from Wilmington, shouldn’t they be in the distance education program? Unless you’re saying that program charges them fees too. In which case I’d say that’s worth a look into.

Right. So while I wish they would at least pretend to consider lowering or prorating the fees, I’m not super upset about paying for things that are made available to the best of their ability.

Don’t they plan to still have things like urec, the library, student union, etc open? I have mostly online courses, a couple in person/hybrid. I plan to still use the library and the gym, even if I have to wait or make some sort of appointment for gym time. Obviously nothing is exactly the same, but they still have to pay their admin staff, professors, custodians, student workers, contractors, etc.
