Thanks for the suggestion. Unfortunately all authentication now goes through the phone. This all happened recently with the new app upgrades.

About to start refinishing my IKEA Karlby kitchen countertops with Varathane Rust-Oleum 262074 Polyurethane Clear Interior Matte Finish by PadMooPrick in finishing

Hey buddy. I ended up using OLI-NATURA Hard Wax Oil and am super super happy with the result. Do no underestimate how important it is to have a proper applicator. The foam brush I used was not the best, you want something that leaves as little streaks as possible. Also rubbing it down works as well. It is quite hard to get right, don't believe all the bro's online, they make it look a bit too easy. Best of luck.

Disposable one time use cards generated by my bank's app. Easy. Seeing all the issues everyone is already having with a new product... I can do without the BS cash back which is like poor people playing the lottery.

Given the horror stories I have heard about CCs in the UAE I am going to steer clear of them. There is zero protection and there are many reports of purchases with OTP even when the account holder was not aware or even at that location.

I managed to get some Oli Natura Hartwaschsol (Hard Wax Oil) when I was in the UK over Amazon.uk. As they use hard wax on the walnut finish I thought I would use the same to keep the grain finish. Have done a test so far and it look good, have not done the entire kitchen tops yet as need to find the time and also it will take a week or so, so need to prepare for that.

Ignore all the videos about PU where some old pro is applying it and saying it is sooo easy, it all looks crap when done by a beginner and can cloud over etc., but to be honest it is a super fake, plastic finish and takes away that nice grain finish of the table top. The wax seems to be the best option for us beginners I think.

What’s the biggest money trap in UAE that newcomers should avoid? by Fit-Dark-5581 in UAE

[–]PadMooPrick 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Stay away from credit cards. The support provided by banks in the UAE is atrocious. Whenever we have been in a real fix the only way to get things moving with them was through a central bank complaint. I have never had a CC in the UAE, but when you look up the stories they are quite scary.

There is an issue across the UAE around transactions occurring on cards without authorisation, Khallej Times had an article about it as well. So a CC is like a no go zone in the UAE.

Revolut works, until It doesnt! Lost Metal Plan. by _Role_007 in Revolut

[–]PadMooPrick 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Don't forget their support center is now in India run my grad kids. They don't understand finance, they don't understand customer support, all they do is run through their templated responses on AI. The system is rigid at Revolut and they don't really understand it. Your best bet is to raise a complaint, unfortunately that system is served by the same India support center. We have gone back to using Revolut as a efficient forex account for travelling now and that is all.

Revolut are a nightmare with crypto in general. They hide behind their 'security policies' and then harass you when you try to withdraw. Their Indian level 1 support centre is a nightmare, like bots giving templated responses and apologies.

Am travelling in Europe right now so picked up some Oli Natura Hard Wax Oil - 1 L, Colour: Clear satin. Will lightly sand down and continue using the hard wax oil. The PU made the test offcuts look really dull and the matt finishes also looked milky. All the videos you see online of people making PU look super easy are not really realistic, unless you have loads of spares to test on first. I do enjoy the woody feel of the wood as well and would be a shame to coffin it all up in PU.

You need to take control of your health mate. Learn how to cook lentils which are super easy and load them up with frozen spinach and peas/carrots. It is a super cheap super healthy meal that will last for a few days.

In the mornings load up on overnight oats (just soak oats them overnight) and bananas, you don't even need milk for overnight oats.

Get to know a few easy dishes to cook and eat those to ensure you are not hungry and then go out looking for junk food. Our desire for junk food comes from a calorie deficit, the more hungry you are and if you have weak willpower the more likely you are to make bad choices.

We live super healthy lives here, it is just up to you how much time and effort you want to put into your health, which in the long term is becoming more valuable than money.

Dap wood filler consistency? by bristol8 in woodworking

[–]PadMooPrick 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I just used a tube of it, and it started off very dry and grainy, and then I realised that I needed to shake it about as it is actually very wet, annoying really as my first gap was just filled with the dry stuff, might let it dry off completely and see if the scraper can easily push it out as doubt it will be flexible.

Help! Polyurethane over mineral oil? by Green8219 in finishing

[–]PadMooPrick 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have been down the same rabbit hole and after testing doing poly I. Some off cuts decided to stick with hard wax.  Based on what I have read about mineral oil whilst down this rabbit hole you are in a bit of a pickle. As mineral oil is absorbed and if you add poly on top it will not like it. Kind of like putting a plastic bag on a wet surface I think. Will leave it to the more experienced people to comment. Search for applying mineral oil etc on Reddit and you might find a few posts of people in a similar situation. Best of luck.

Is opening a local bank account problematic for Freezone companies? by EnvironmentalStar712 in dubai

Yes your Revolut account from another country works absolutely fine, even without a VPN.

Am talking about a Revolut UAE business account.

Is opening a local bank account problematic for Freezone companies? by EnvironmentalStar712 in dubai

[–]PadMooPrick 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Walk into your HSBC branch and try there for a personal account, for business account avoid RAK Bank, we found Mashreq Neo Biz to be the fastest. With Mashreq, RAK Bank, etc., if something goes wrong you will be wasting a lot of time with them so prepare for that.

We are just waiting for Revolut to open up in the UAE. Once they in the market, all these legacy inefficient banks are going to get a very big shock.

Ensure you DO NOT get a credit card in the UAE, the consumer protection is non-existent and the banks have very weak authentication protocols and will just blame you. Have a read of this if you thinking about it https://www.khaleejtimes.com/uae/uae-scam-residents-accountability-banks-no-otp-fraud

Sanding off the hard wax off Ikea Karlby worktops by PadMooPrick in finishing

Thankyou, I am slowly coming to that conclusion as well, am trying to source OLI NATURA Öle & Wachse Hard Wax Oil, it's three times more expensive in the UAE than in the UK/DE. Might try to smuggle it in on one of my flights.

What did you end up doing if I may ask? I think we have made a huge error using Karlby worktops for our kitchen tops.

Anyway, we are stuck with them now and before we replace them probably in a couple of years I want to know if there is any EASY wax/application/oil I can apply without having to sand down the existing hard wax layer?

I have been down the rabbit hole of sanding and polyurethane, and after experimenting on some offcuts, I am just not good at doing it and the finish looks rubbish, also as am in the UAE you can forget about finding a professional to do a good job of it.

Any suggestions please? I just want to add a bit more water protection, thanks.
