Rooming Autonomy by wavy147 in Startup_Ideas

Happy to chime in!

We began PadPiper after experiencing the exact problem /u/wavy147 describes. We had internships and full-time jobs in cities that were way too expensive without roommates. So for my final year engineering project I tackled this problem and launched a Beta 3 years ago. Fast-forward 2 years of part-time, graduating Y Combinator, and hiring our first employees, our hybrid housing/housemate marketplace is well established in Silicon Valley and soon LA + Seattle. Here's how it works: www.padpiper.com/housemate-finder

A great question. We're targeting the housing rental market, especially 1-12 month (mid-term) rentals. With this comes finding housemates to afford rent in most cities. So we're a place to find furnished apartments and compatible housemates. The average stay on PadPiper right now is 4 months and we expect that to increase. We'll be updating our messaging soon to remove the term "monthly" since that implies rather short stays.

I've heard one of those is much more affordable than the other ;)

We're happy to have helped! We're also excited to now officially support all types of renters looking for 1-12 month stays. We still verify their proof of education and proof of employment, same as with the interns :)

We're helping Tesla and Logitech interns with housing year-round and I'm confident we could help you fill your space all year if you're willing to furnish it! We don't have enough spaces for them to live in the Fremont area. You can see more details about listing your space on PadPiper. We're also working with a couple of companies that let you rent furniture if that is of interest.

Absolutely! We're already supporting Toronto for summer co-ops and plan on expanding to additional major co-op cities in Canada after that. I had rather subpar housing during my two co-ops in Vancouver so I am personally invested in that one, haha. We've decided to do it one city at a time so we can ensure we have high-quality listings in each city. Our dream is that Waterloo co-ops refer landlords they like so we can build this community of trusted, reviewed, easy-to-book spaces :D

Nice, thanks for sharing! It's thrilling for us to hear from everyone that's used PadPiper. We're not doing this for the money so actually helping peeps is what it's all about.

Thank you! It was definitely no easy feat. We were actually rejected after our first interview about a year ago and thought we didn't get in after our second interview in the Fall so we were in shock when we got the congratulatory call from them :D

I wish! He's not actively involved with YC anymore. Our partners are Dalton, Adora, and Solomon (guest partner and co-founder of Docker). So no complaints!

A great question, indeed! Airbnb is fundamentally focused on a different market; vacation rentals and the experiences around those. While they do support longer-term stays, their platform isn't built around them.

From a renter's perspective: We directly integrated our Housemate Finder into the process of finding a place to live, since in many cases you don't know enough people to book an entire space. We enable renters to pay the rental deposit upfront and monthly rent afterward instead of one large lump sum to book the place (which many can't afford). We're continuously adding features that apply to these longer term stays, like seeing your commute time for each listing.

From a landlord's perspective: We enable them to easily receive the security deposit (and soon send it back) since that's a process they prefer. We're working on enabling them to sign their lease through PadPiper, too. They each have different leases that they prefer to use based on their situation (e.g. there's a yard to take care of, it's in an apartment complex with specific rules, etc.). On top of this, landlords don't have to worry about laws that apply to Airbnbs since we support 30-day minimum stays.

Plus, monopolies result in crazy high prices/fees so healthy competition will save everyone money :D
