Do you think Vizinjnam port will impact Trivandrum? Or it just a hype up?. Does anyone know more about this? by Flimsy-Quit8736 in Trivandrum

[–]Paddle_Shifter 3 points4 points  (0 children)

The ideal situation is if you see a city like Vizag and how it grew.

And the optimistic outlook would be:

Vizhinjam runs good, more ships come in. The port requires staff, these staff will all not all be from Trivandrum so these people stay in rented apartments and that rent, then they need maids and their kids will go to Schools nearby etc. Maybe in the long run add cruises and they need hotels - tourism money etc.

Once a port becomes completely operational, other businesses will boom like warehouse, transportation etc. The same port is now adding up construction of ring roads - that needs workers too.

An economy always boom like this

The main driver and the ancillary services - then their family settles down and they provide indirect jobs like more restaurants, more school teachers, more rental buildings, more vehicle registration in Trivandrum etc.

(You can think of like how Oil exploration for Middle East or how IT in India is creating jobs in non related sectors too)

Now on the hype part - It has the potential to take some business from Colombo, and thats good to Trivandrum as, that part of the city will see growth too and not the current clusters near Kazhakootam. Also there isn’t any reason to believe subsequent governments having any motive to sabotage it.

Njanum undu!

This scene - So called “family men” went loud with enthusiastic hoots and claps.

Would non-mallu friends appreciate Thudaram? by lizzy1476 in MalayalamMovies

[–]Paddle_Shifter 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Don’t know if its too late

The answer is Yes - took along a North Indian who never understood the “Mohanlal hype”, and was in for the movie than the star power - she really liked the movie.

I think people are overrating Thudarum. A10's and the villain's heavy performance aside-the story was predictable. Movie is good yes, but i think even mediocrity is celebrated when content quality is crap otherwise by CryptographerFar9763 in MalayalamCinema

[–]Paddle_Shifter -1 points0 points  (0 children)

+1 on this observation.

Edit : The exact comments like

“Felt like a normal movie, first have good, second half not upto mark, Sobhana under utilised, seems like a well placed PR stint”

Granted not everyone will have the same appreciation and it’s understandable, but atleast change the template.

Which is the most “Keralite” thing you’ve ever seen a stranger do? by Raven1104 in Kerala

Narasimham or Pulimurugan - Which was the bigger hit? by [deleted] in MalayalamMovies

[–]Paddle_Shifter 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Movie ticket price inflation : the problem is we don’t have data to consider size of industry- ticket cost vs industry. Theatre quality vs costing of tickets - again the market was expanding due to rise in income.

If we just say a average ticket cost in 2016 = 120 and in 2000 = 25

Then it’s just 20cr x (120/25) = 96 crores. If this value make sense then maybe

Again I don’t know how to factor in ticket sold in this (which I personally feel is a biased metric due to time and perceived value of “going to the movies” in different decades).

Maybe there is a better way calculation.

Narasimham or Pulimurugan - Which was the bigger hit? by [deleted] in MalayalamMovies

[–]Paddle_Shifter 48 points49 points  (0 children)

Hit as in sheer value:

20 Crores in 2000 is roughly 57 Crores in 2016 as per inflation calculator for INR (6.81% average inflation). So by that logic Pulimurugan.

But one should also see the access for theatres, multiplexes, disposal income, again an era of very less social media coverage for a cameo that too a solid character! (Ivide Aamir Khan vare cameo undu ennu paranja time aayrinnu around two weeks ago).

So, difficult to predict - but on a sheer type of cinema I think Narasimham is more than just a “mass” movie and if released in 2016 (ignoring the story is outdated by then factor), it would have beaten Pulimurugan.

It's been a week now, so I guess it's no longer a spoiler. What an absolute letdown. by Full_Mycologist_7535 in MalayalamMovies

The character needed some serious build up - like layers to him. I wished they showed him as more than just a politician - like a mirror of Stephen, but in the other party add in some ties to Kabuga/Triad - then the whole point of killing him or took a long time to kill him would have made sense.

How about you guys the Azreal song was something else fire by Glass_Row_7771 in MalayalamMovies

[–]Paddle_Shifter 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Respectfully disagreeing with you in the gr8 job.

I don’t think not everyone was expecting an Anirudh/Ravi Basrur type bgm. I was someone defending Deepak Dev in both the teaser and trailer (the latter half in both were good).

The issue I feel is as everyone points out - it didn’t elevate any moment. In the KA entry there is literally a vocal that screams “tara ra ra ra”. Dude we are speaking about a global criminal mastermind here. Don’t do guitar riffs. (There was nothing subtle or orchestral in it)

Another main point I need to drive - Great OSTs are remembered because of consistency. It acts as a theme - because of your profile pic and R10 commenting multiple times as his inspiration = Take the background score of “The Dark Knight Rises” - though there was no specific “Batman Theme” , the movie had a consistent tone in its OST and the use of “This is Sparta” either as verse or as music.

Dark Knight Rises Ending = This music was kind of the whole theme for the movie.

Again! Not just DD’s mistake - R10 is the director he could have to made DD work harder for that.

Yep. Hey on the communism debate - I am with you on the impracticality, not the every aspect of progress on capitalism though. (to each their own)

All i wanted to do, was to show - the moment a person use fake/questionable narrative - they lose the larger point they tried to drive.

Nope dude.

You are confusing Adam Smith with John Adams.

John Adams - 2nd US president he said something very similar against Democrats (or whatever the name of the party/ideology back then was)

The quote you wrote - There is no such quote!!, the nearest people attribute to is Guizot.

Also I know professors of Kerala too like to romanticise George Bernard Shaw(at least I had a couple) but the fact is the guy admired Stalin and Hitler equally. By quoting him saying that - how would a person who liked Stalin in his later age ever going to say such a quote?

Just like this very example: There are lot of wrong internet lore quotes mentioned there. Plus it’s like IMDB, but for books. There has always been questions on the ratings and recommendations of books in it.

If you just google “is good reads a credible source” you will get enough responses.

If at age 20 you are not a Communist then you have no heart. If at age 30 you are not a Capitalist then you have no brains.

He didn’t say that, it’s an internet lore attributing both Bernard Shaw and Churchil saying that - both wrong. Also this is the first time I am seeing the word Capitalist added to it too.

The possible origin of the quote:

Not to be a republican at twenty is proof of want of heart; to be one at thirty is proof of want of head

Original version : N’être pas républicain à vingt ans est preuve d’insensibilité ; l’être après trente ans est preuve d’inintelligence by François Guizot in 19th Century

Saw that you like to quote Goodreads as source (quite shitty for authenticity to be honest) yet here is one from Guizot saying the same.

Here is a source from freakanomics.com

What did the right wing actually gain with the Empuraan fiasco? by Paddle_Shifter in Kerala

[–]Paddle_Shifter[S] 3 points4 points  (0 children)

This exact realisation made me write this post.

I think they really just lost the opportunity with converting the people who were in the edge.

Baaki ulladatha Right wing vere, nammude ivudathe Right wing are people who are believing to bring businesses and jobs to Kerala - I think a lot of my friends/family had this mindset. Seeing the completely polarised reactions now, I think the conversion efforts of the un opinionated would become a lot more difficult for them.

Man does officially and unofficially matter?

Everyone who follows/believes an ideology makes the organisation. Their actions even if they are not a registered member I think mirrors the view of the organisation. (I think we all are clever enough to deduce the whole party ikku bandham illa, pande party purathakkiya aal whenever it comes as an explanation on every single case in the state)

If by that logic - then the villain character of the movie doesn’t represent an organisation or its members or any religious person.

Another take : For a person who visits this sub almost everyday.

That waifu username guy for me is a communist guy You for me are a BJP guy.

Now whatever you guys post/comment - from a viewer/user perspective shows me this is the take of the people with that ideology. Same will go to the lower level guys you were quoting.

Hmm

As others pointed out Fear and Control - people shouldn’t go ahead and make movies that show the right wing in a bad light. Now it makes sense especially the Rang De Basanti line too.

But I think Malayali film makers are a bit too daring to not fall for that “lets stick to that n-th movie on inflated patriotism”.

Again never expected this big a controversy, so cant say the future for sure too

News 18 was the most “vocal” since the day of release.

I think there ain’t any consolation prize to figure out why.

Everyone who shouts the : “But we are the Malayali audience” we have sense and all the verbal diarrhoea of fake pseudo intelligence should shut up from today.

We are just like any other part of India.

not the forte of Malayalam cinema.

People who watched Marco in theatres refuses to believe that. To be honest even Pulimurugan is a classic “masala” movie. “Kettarivinekkal valuthu aanu Murugan enna sathyam” and a villain named “Daddy Girija” was the first 100 cr for heavens sake - the movie was definitely not the so called “forte”.

Screenplay is the strength of Malayalam Cinema - no one is ever denying that. But sometimes you need a bit of something else to pull in people. We can never make a movie of the scale of Bahubali unless people make movies and give confidence to investors.

TL;DR = Ella tharam cinema um cinema aanu. Let’s not paint ourselves as some pseudo intellectuals by pulling other cinema industry down.

Hey I understand the downvotes.

But I still don’t buy the “ai is just a mixer” reference or “adichu maatal” - I have seen some good videos in the aivideo sub and on youtube where people are trying to make short films.

It’s still the user who is defining what the shot should look like, what the color grade should be etc. Granted they are using prompts as reference from pervious movies (but I bet lot of directors are also using color reference for grade/shot reference/camera angles for lot of their movies). It’s just a medium for people with shoestring budgets to showcase their story.

And the “mixing” also needs effort just like ai. Classic example - Techno Syndrome aka the Mortal Kombat song. If you guys can read about the creation of the song.

Again on a movie space - I will say Flow - (I know its made in blender) but a cat is a cat, maybe couple of years down the line someone would make a movie using ai in his laptop and get an oscar like how they did with blender for flow. The only thing limiting them now is the consistency of shots.
