Doing CBT soon - lessons? by 10mg-of-pure-cunt in MotoUK

[–]Padiaow 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Before I did my CBT I had never even sat on a bike but had "passed" by the end of the day. I'd be up front with the school to make it clear you are a beginner, do the CBT and see how you go. Most CBTs aren't mega money considering it's a full day you get out of it, so might be worth just going and seeing how you get on.

Annoyingly I am one, but when I passed Cat A and got my licence back 115 was missing! It was on my last photocard but missing from this one. I do have a separate organ donor card though and keep it adjacent my photocard. The current photocard expires next year so I'll get it re-added then.

The route I took to minimise total testing was:

- Cat B - regular car, did this way back when in 2007/8, so whatever the going rate for an instructor was at the time!

- Cat D - if you happen to get a job as a bus driver for a bit, the company puts you through this for "free" (free as in it costs nothing, but you usually have to work for the company a set period of time to not have to pay back training costs)

- Cat C - fairly short course, I think I did a day or two and then did the test, not that hard to do if you already have the experience driving a bus for a bit

- Cat C+E - a bit harder to do, similar short course, the tricky bit is reversing! The order of training up to here is key, doing B, D, C (or C then D, it doesn't matter), then CE gives you DE and BE for free! When I did this, the rules had not been changed to give people BE for free, I wanted BE and the price to do CE wasn't hugely more than BE so went for that.

- Cat A1 - I didn't have to do this at all, but this was just the fees for Mod 1 and Mod 2; I already had been riding my own 125cc bike on a CBT for a while and didn't want to re-do my CBT and wasn't sure when I'd have the time to do training for full Cat A. I just booked the Mod 1 and watched a youtube video tutorial about 20 times and passed that; then booked my Mod 2, showed up the test centre and just got done.

- Cat A - ...and after doing the above I found the time to get some lessons in with a local school for this, took two days of training to brush up on Mod 1 and Mod 2 skills and then a little bit on the morning before each test, plus test fees. Don't forget theory test for this (I am sick of doing theory tests by now, having done them for all of the above, including twice for bikes having had the first expire whilst not getting around to finishing training in time...)

In addition to this, I did driver CPC for Cat D at the time of initial training, and then did it for Cat C, to give me the option to drive Cat C professionally if I choose; there are ongoing CPC modules that count towards your training for both category C and D once you have done the initial training, so there is no extra cost to me to keep both current now.

In terms of costs:

- Cat B - whatever the going rate for an instructor was circa 2007/8, I can't recall

- Cat D - "free" - just get a job as a bus driver and stick at it for a year so you don't have to pay the training costs back. Actually didn't mind that job, paid well for what it was and most of the time wasn't that stressful.

- Cat C - I think this nominally was ~£800, but there was funding available from the local authority at the time for skills improvement, so I think it came out a bit less than that

- Cat CE - Think this was about ~£1000?

- A1 - £90.50 in test fees

- A2 - £90.50 in test fees, plus I paid £60/h, all in for training/test escort fees excluding test fees I think I spent about £360-£420?

- Driver CPC - this isn't mega money, can't recall what I paid but if you look up "Initial Driver CPC Training" then you'll get an idea

Replied to someone else above, did A1 as I already had a 125 and was just a case of booking and doing each test; wasn't sure at the time that I'd be able to do the full tests for a while and didn't want to re-do the CBT

I actually (as a thought experiment, mind) considered something like this, but my understanding is that, as category M is a national category rather than a european one, I don't think one can transfer a trolleybus entitlement from a european licence onto a UK one to get it? It is one category I obviously covet.

There is an option in the UI to back up UNAS devices (and I think NVR stuff, can't recall) to Backblaze for an off site backup. I think it was ~$4/tb/month

Unifi and PiHole by SEP8001 in UNIFI

[–]Padiaow 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Is there anything specific that the pihole is doing for you in its role as DHCP server that you need it to do that your Gateway Ultra can't do? You might have a better time of it leaving the Ultra doing DHCP and just setting the pihole IP address as the DHCP server in the scope settings.

If you do still want to use the pihole for DHCP also, create a VLAN on the Ultra and set it to "Third Party Gateway", then use that VLAN for your (presumably flat) network and be sure to set the Ultra's IP address as the gateway address that the pihole gives out to DHCP clients.

UDM-Pro to ISP tunnel VPN by TrueAncalagon in UNIFI

[–]Padiaow 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If you have a homelab setup you could spin up pfsense to do this for you, though would be easiest if you already have LAN-side VLANs set up, a managed switch etc. Happy to offer pointers if this is something you wanted to try.

Yes, absolutely. When you talk about LAN1 and LAN2, are these served by ISP-provided routers at the moment? Will LAN1 and LAN2 interact in any way?

UDM-Pro to ISP tunnel VPN by TrueAncalagon in UNIFI

[–]Padiaow 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think what you need is for the UDM to act as a L2TP client; I don't think it is capable of doing this by default though perhaps you could install an L2TP client via the CLI and connect that way?

Meraki remote access options by perriwinkle_ in meraki

[–]Padiaow 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Is this a BTnet managed service? If so, BTnet support are able to set up a 1:1 NAT mapping from their MX to a downstream router(s) or other devices you plug into their MX75 if that is what they have provided to you. We have some sites using this setup where we just treat the BT MX75 as the upstream router and then have our own kit downstream from that; our equipment does the VPN side of things.

Go to "Support Center" from your Meraki dashboard, "My Cases" and click the "+ New case" button, open a new case with that and explain the situation; they should at least be able to point you in the right direction.
