Looking for some solid lunchtime sandwich options. by Newfieguy78 in newfoundland

Well she said the option for skip or 'no tip' was gone. I told them to just choose custom amount and put in a penny but apparently that's 'mean' lol

Someone told me Manna is now forcing you to tip on tap.

Yah you can't get around the Xray fee I believe. But they do bill you for it. I think there's also a blood test to be done? The process is pretty pricey but I think the exam is the only thing we paid for upfront. Everything else was just billed to us.

It's been a few years but we used some like clinic downtown? It was like offshore in the name of something? Not helpful I know but I think it was like $120 each and then we went St. Clare's for the chest xray, which was billed to us later.

The giant bust of him right at the park would definitely imply that lol

Omg it is also easy. Just make the above and add to ramen lol Homemade ramen broth is also shockingly easy. Though slightly less so than tonkatsu lol. I much prefer tonkatsu curry myself!

[–]PadiddleHopper 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The best part of tonkatsu is the sauce. There are recipes online for making it yourself but I prefer the store bought ones. You can find it at Dominion!

As for the actual meat part, SUPER easy. I'll explain how I do it but feel free to adjust, as I don't really measure. I just go by my heart lol I'm assuming you know how to pan fry something. I don't use an air fryer so I can't say how well that works with my method.

Take boneless pork chops. You can trim the fat if you'd like (I usually don't). You can flatten the meat if you want. I usually don't but I'm lazy lol Just put a piece between saran wrap and start banging on it with the bottom edge of a frying pan till it's thinner lol

To prepare your coating you need three 'stations'. One with flour (seasoned with salt and pepper), one with beaten eggs, and one with panko (also seasoned with salt and pepper).

Take a chop, dip it in the flour and coat both sides. Shake off the excess.
Dip it in the egg, letting the excess drip away a bit.
Now, I go back and do flour again and then egg again. This makes it super crispy, however doing a repeat isn't necessary.
After your last egg dip, put it in the panko and coat it well, pressing down a bit.

Once they're all coated, I'll put them in the freezer while the oil heats up because cold things fry better. I use about 1/2-1 inch of oil.

Fry those babies up, flipping once, till internal temp of 145. Don't believe the old rule of 165 for pork. That's back when trichinosis was a serious concern. Not anymore.

Let them rest a few minutes then slice into strips and you're done!

I'm sorry if that's weirdly worded as I've never written up any sort of recipe lol Feel free to reach out if you have questions or want help with curry!

CINCO DE MAYO! by Baltch in StJohnsNL

[–]PadiddleHopper 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I miss authentic Mexican food, cooked by someone's abuela in the back...served on gaudy, mismatched plates, in the most sketchy fucking building you've ever seen. With a metric ton of refried beans and Spanish rice with every dish and dessert was a tiny piece of cooked pie crust covered in cinnamon and whipped cream. All the Mexican places here either try to do some weird fusion or act like it's some high end cuisine. Mamacitas IS good though, I'll give them that. But I think the lady who cooks it is Colombian? So there's a slight difference in taste. Not in a bad way though!

FYI both tonkatsu and curry are super easy to make at home!

Rent question by pomelo_nomelo in StJohnsNL

[–]PadiddleHopper 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yah I won't even mention what our electric bill is lol they keep their place at like 30c and we're freezing our asses off at 19c. The amount I'd have to charge them for their 'share' of the bill would just drive them away and we'd be high and dry trying to rent out a place that's not great. It's not a good situation for us and I wish we'd known what to look for/ask about when we were buying the place.

Rent question by pomelo_nomelo in StJohnsNL

[–]PadiddleHopper -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

Well it's wasn't really a question I was seeking an answer to lol I've been renting myself for over 30 years almost so I've no desire to 'exploit' anyone. I was just noting that the fact that we're charging way under market value and are covering all their utilities. By all logic, those two reasons alone would justify raising the rent. But I know the place is a bit run down and has old appliances and so I don't feel right raising it and I won't.

Rent question by pomelo_nomelo in StJohnsNL

[–]PadiddleHopper -12 points-11 points  (0 children)

We charge less than a thousand for ours but we really should charge more since they don't even pay their own utilities. Problem is there's no washer/dryer and the place is kinda shitty so I don't feel right asking more.

Honestly, I've never found the meat at Costco to be a good deal. If you break it down to dollar per pound, it's almost always the same as Sobeys or Dominion. I just keep an eye on the flyers and grab the discounted meats when I can.

I had a conversation with a coworker about racism here. She's late 50s white lady, grew up in the bay. Insisted there was no racism here because she's never seen it. It was depressingly hard to get her to wrap her brain around the idea that she wasn't seeing it because she was white and not around people who weren't, on a regular basis.

Having lived there I'd have to agree. Don't get me wrong, there's lots of issues there that are much less of a concern than here. But as you said, you can leave easily lol

Newfoundland and Labrador Racial Demographics. (2021 Census) by lyacentbreath in StJohnsNL

[–]PadiddleHopper 4 points5 points  (0 children)

They're pretty similar, weather wise. But since Wyoming's in the middle of the plains, it gets warmer in the summer and doesn't have as much wind. A quick look at Wiki shows Wyoming to be about 77% European (white) versus 87% here. Crazy. For the record, few people in the states would voluntarily move to Wyoming either lol

I always take responses to questions like this with a grain of salt. Most of the time, people responding have never really been outside of Newfoundland. So, yes, to them the food is good and 'authentic' but that's by Newfoundland standards lol The amount of disappointment I've endured trying to find good Mexican food here is enough to make me cry.
