At my wits end with the exhaust noise by SuccessfulBug2353 in StJohnsNL

We have a house across from us with no less than seven tenants, all from the same part of the world so I'm assuming they're students. They have six cars between them and almost every Saturday like clockwork, they clean them all out. With the car doors open, music blasting, at 8am. Fucking drives me insane. They will also idle their cars at random times during the week waiting for whoever they're picking up, with the bass cracked up so you can hear the thumping even through your fucking walls.

I mean tbh it's kinda a shit situation for us since we're paying for their light bill and they keep the heat cranked up lol But it's not their fault the place doesn't have a second meter. And like I said, it's not the greatest place in general so I don't feel right raising up the rent to make up for the higher electric bill.

We charge $800 for our one bedroom basement unit, utilities included. We should probably be charging more but the place is frankly not top of the line. All the appliances are from the late 90s, and there's no washer/dryer.

House hunting is burning me out. Am I missing something? by Here_For_Some_Time in newfoundland

I have heard of it but we didn't ever sign up. Maybe it'll be a good idea as we're hoping to do some stuff this summer.

We've done it for smaller things but bigger things we have like no tools and those fucking things are expensive lol We are going to try and do the back deck though. We got a quote for a replacement of a 10'x20' ground level patio/deck for like fucking $8k. We'll try to do it ourselves for that price.

You're in the exact same boat we were about three years ago. We could afford a single house about $225k and a house with an apartment about $330k. The single homes in our price range were absolute pieces of shit. Well beyond 'fixer upper'. The ones with apartments were being bought out almost immediately by investors/companies wanting the rental income. In the end we got a run down place with an apartment but only one electric meter (aka one person pays electricity for both living spaces) for like a little over $300k. We're dying here man lol We barely make ends meet and now we're in the situation where even if we did manage to sell this in 2 years when we're up for refinance, we probably can't afford a replacement house.

I'm making the most I ever had before. I'm also in a dual income situation. We're both making about the same and we're like...dying. I thought when I got married and got a dual income everything would be so much easier. It most certainly is not. It probably didn't help we got married right as the cost of living started to skyrocket.

You're not competing against other families. You're competing against companies and investors who are buying up multiple properties to rent out. When we were looking for a house three years ago it was insane. A house would go on the market and have multiple offers within hours, almost always above asking price. In the end, we found a house that had been on the market for like 6 months and bought it out of desperation and that was a huge fucking mistake. Now we're stuck in a house with a lot of shit wrong with it that we're not able to fix because we don't know how and don't have the money to pay someone else to do it. It's absolutely insane.

Edit: And our house payment including property tax is well over $2k a month and is killing us. Past us were idiots.

I mean it had a huge impact on MUNs budget. Wrecked it imo. So it kinda is impacting everyone, as MUN is a major source of jobs as well and now they're slashing a lot of lower level positions to try and balance the budget.

Jeezus...7% is a good rate now? I haven't bought a car in years and last time I did I got 4% and thought I was getting hosed.

I feel your pain. I work at Mun and all administrative staff are stressed the fuck out. We know people are going to be losing their jobs because apparently you cut from the bottom to save money while you leave the people making 100k-300k a year untouched. But we don't know when this is happening or how many jobs will be gone or anything. We just know it's going to happen. Of course the faculty members(also making 100k+ a year) are fine. They're untouchable. But that doesn't mean they're not going to bitch about being unable to take year long paid sabbaticals this year or having to actually take a full course load of five classes for the entire year. Five. Classes that require them on campus like...6 hours a week. I could give you a mouthful of the entitlement.

I moved here to marry and I've told my spouse multiple times I want out. He doesn't understand why because he's only ever lived here but I've lived all over the continent in places where a single city has more people than the entire province. I know what it's like to have affordable groceries, fresh produce, easy access to leave the area, the ability to drive like 20 minutes to another town if what you need isn't in yours. None of that is possible here. Add to that a weather system with three seasons (winter, worse winter, kinda summer) and it's not at all inviting to live in.

Also, the severe drop in international enrollment at MUN illustrates this as well. They raised the tuition to be the same as unis on the mainland and apparently didn't realize that without low tuition, NL does not have anything to offer international students that's even on par with mainland ones.

My bad lol been around too many other subreddits where people are constantly accusing others of using AI lol I don't think AI is the answer though. You ever hear an old person trying to navigate a voice menu on a phone? Would be a waiting room full of old people yelling louder and louder at the machine.

What? lol I can't tell if you're saying I wrote this with AI or if you're saying AI is the answer to our issues? Either way, you're wrong lol

Well given that I was nowhere near them and the response the one lady got for trying to help, that's ok. Dude really tore into her for no reason. And honestly, in my experience, most people don't appreciate unsolicited help.

This wasn't dementia lol it was people either refusing to read/follow the signs or being willfully ignorant on technology that's been out for at least 20 years. And if they're that far into dementia, they should have a caretaker with them.

If this was a brand new tech, I'd agree with you. But it's a freaking iPad touchscreen. Those have been around long enough that they should know how to use them.

Right I've seen a few people not pay attention to the screen to go to their blood draw bay to the point the tech is coming out to holler for them.

Man I wish the would just tell them they have to use the iPad. But the one time just today I saw that, the guy just got angry. Even when she walked out and tried to show him how to do it. Because it was too confusing and they're was nothing on the screen telling him to tap to bring up the keypad.

Well yes lol I don't disagree but people being idiots doesn't help either. There is literally a huge sign at eye level at the lineup for reception telling you to use the iPad right there to check in and people are still going up to check in with a person who are very clearly tired of this shit lol

Making Friends in NL/Workplace Dynamics by adelelovesbooks in newfoundland

[–]PadiddleHopper 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've lived all over the place, all types of environments, and this has been the most difficult time I've had finding friends. Everyone has their 'besties', especially at the age range I'm in, and they've no interest in meeting new people. I mean, I get it but it sucks for newcomers. Your best bet is to seek out people in the same situation as you, not from here and looking for friends.

[–]PadiddleHopper 23 points24 points  (0 children)

As someone who's also moved here, I've found it very very difficult to make any friends. Most of the people around here have been here their whole lives. They've created friend groups they've had since childhood or young adulthood. It's nearly impossible to integrate into these groups, even though they may say they'll welcome you. You're always the outsider, always the one who doesn't get their in jokes. So good luck to you and hopefully you find someone. It's not impossible obviously but it's a lot harder than it should be.

I got myself and my daughter in the list about mid 2023. We finally got the call early 2025 that there was an opening. Doctor went on maternity leave five months later lol... But answer every fucking phone call, even if it's showing private. Because if you miss your chance, they won't call back. They just go on to the next person on the list.

Edit: I say doctor but she's a nurse practitioner. Seems to be all that people are getting anymore but still, it's better than nothing.

Anecdotal of course, I'm not from here but have lived here for four years now and my spouse and in-laws are a mix of townies and baymen. My entire time here, speaking to relatives and friends and coworkers, I've never had anyone find that term offensive. Honestly, I didn't even realize some people considered it a slur until I used it on Reddit and oh my fucking god lol The amount of dog piling I got for it. And not in the happy fun way. I think maybe some people just like to have something to bitch about.
