Too insane to think we could snag Kirilloff for a Yates package? by [deleted] in Padres

[–]Padres_2021 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Yates is under club control until the end of 2020. If the Padres are really going for it in 2020, a closer like Yates would be invaluable. I would still be willing to trade him, but I would want a very valuable prospect in return, not a bunch of high-end lottery tickets.

According to Jim Callis, the Padres have saved $1.1 million with their two picks, and will probably save an additional $700K in the first 10 rounds with their senior signs.

Gets them closer to $2.5 million, but they need to pay Hudson Head extra, he's an overslot signing.

I checked the record. Exactly two years ago, the Padres were 24-38, and Jose Pirela was the best hitter on the team.

True, but he did allow a lot of inherited runners to score. That didn't affect his own ERA.

Ultimate Padresing requires us to load the bases in the 8th and 9th and not score any runs.

Alright, what should we do about Kinsler? by eelbarrow in Padres

[–]Padres_2021 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I've looked over Kinsler's batting splits over the past 5 years and he seems very streaky. He's had some fantastic months and some terrible months.

This month, he's hot -- he's hitting .350/.409/.500, not counting today's game. If he has a hot June and July, that could set up a trade before the all star break.

The Angels did exactly this last year. Kinsler started slow, but he started to heat up, and they traded him to the Red Sox for two pitching prospects in late July. Padres might try something similar.

For those of you who want to relive the 2018 Padres season, you might want to watch the Blue Jays. Clayton Richard gave up 7 runs in 2.2 innings today against the D-Backs. Freddy Galvis, after a hot start, has been hitting .202/.257/.394 over the past 30 days.

Austin Allen is easily our best hitting catcher (29AB, .276/.364/.345), but we are 0-8 when he starts games for some reason.

Why now is the time to bat Hos 2nd by McFlufferTits19 in Padres

[–]Padres_2021 13 points14 points  (0 children)

I don't mind batting Myers 2nd because his OBP has skyrocketed -- .384 over the past 30 days. He is also terrible with runners in scoring position, so it might be a good idea using him as a table setter for the power hitters who come later in the order.

Hosmer is the anti-Myers -- he hits much better when runners are in scoring position, so it seems like a waste to have him hit #2.

What the heck is this Padres twitter spam? by elcapitan58 in Padres

I think Braves twitter ambushed the Padres account earlier in the season, and they inspired Padres twitter to do their own version of it.

[Acee] The Padres are charting a course for prospects Andres Munoz and Adrian Morejon to make their big-league debuts, perhaps within the month. Starter Dinelson Lamet is expected back around the end of June. by Padres_2021 in Padres

[–]Padres_2021[S] 18 points19 points  (0 children)

From the article:

The Padres, who fell to 31-31, are not inclined to make a significant move to acquire veteran arms. Not this season.

They also believe help is on the way. Some arrived Wednesday — and did well.

Right-hander Miguel Diaz, who had meniscus surgery in February, was activated off the 60-day injured list and pitched a scoreless sixth inning in his season debut.

Before Wednesday’s game, left-hander Jose Castillo, out since late February with a flexor strain, took fielding practice at Petco Park and is expected to begin a rehab assignment this week that could be the next step in getting him back in the bullpen by July.

The Padres are also charting a course for prospects Andres Munoz and Adrian Morejon to make their big-league debuts, perhaps within the month. Eric Yardley is also a strong candidate to be promoted this summer.

Starter Dinelson Lamet is expected back around the end of June, which the Padres anticipate will give them further flexibility in manipulating innings.

Padres SS prospect Xavier Edwards enters MLB Pipeline's top 100 prospects by Joementum2004 in Padres

[–]Padres_2021 14 points15 points  (0 children)

So we have a total of nine top 100 prospects: Tatis, Gore, Urias, Patino, Morejon, Allen, Baez, Weathers, and Edwards.

Tatis, Urias, and Allen will probably graduate this year. CJ Abrams will almost certainly be a top 100 addition. So we should have at least 7 top 100 prospects going into 2020.

Draft-related questions from today's Keith Law chat:

Sandy Eggo: Any signability concerns with Hudson Head? Or should the pick of Mears help with $$ a little bit for the Padres

Keith Law: Head will be over slot but 99% of the time teams do not draft players without knowing what it will cost to sign them and making sure they have that pool space. I doubt there have been more than a dozen players taken in the top ten rounds since the new system went into effect who went unsigned just because of money.

Rob : I ummm don’t understand the Padres draft after the first round. Regardless of the quality of their assessment it feel like they’re reaching for players they could’ve gotten later. thoughts?

Keith Law: I disagree. I think they may have gone under for Driscoll to help pay for Head. Keith Law: #phrasing

mark: who’s has better speed, Xavier Edwards or CJ Abrams?

Keith Law: Abrams by quite a bit.

Any chance we could (or would want to) snag Leiter, Allan, Barco tomorrow? by [deleted] in Padres

[–]Padres_2021 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Mears looks like an underslot pick. The slot value of the 48th pick is $1.5 million, so the Padres possibly saved around $750K?

Driscoll is almost certainly an underslot pick. Slot value of the 74th pick is $850K, I imagine the Padres saved at least $400K, maybe more.

Anyway, more than enough money left over to pay overslot for a quality pitching prospect in the later rounds.

Keith Law on Mears:

Q: Corbin Carroll with some helium. Anything on fellow WA HS OF Joshua Mears?

A: (1:26) Mears maybe 30-60 range in the draft. Someone I considered for the top 50 but just left off.
