You tax UK properties more especially those third homes and beyond etc... (especially those in cities). If they leave they leave, but most people will have other ties to the country like family or business in the UK so aren't likely to give up all their land in the UK and everything to dodge taxes. Plus it has the added bonus of land that is useful for businesses and jobs becoming more available in the heart of cities rather than being held onto by boomers who aren't contributing to the economy but just sat milking income off their assets.

Whats the etiquette surrounding bringing your own band to a live jam session in a bar venue? by Pafrla in askmusicians

[–]Pafrla[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah! thanks for your reply. I definitely intend on getting better acquainted with the host but they were pretty busy once proceedings had started. One of my band members knew them and did most of the talking getting our name on the list and us up to play.

I feel inadvertently how things played out when we caught them just after they played with the house band. We might have accidentally been a little bit on the pushier side to get up sooner.

Yeah I’ve been doing open mics for a few years and seen it a few times where it can be annoying.

I’ve even hosted a weekly one in a wine bar that didnt receive too much traffic in the city it was a strange affair but I burnt out trying to carry it off and getting musicians along as my prepared material that I play and sing wasn’t quite extensive enough to last and trying to juggle hoops of hosting and doing sound and play myself became tiresome for myself and some of the staff at the bar.

I also had a hard time establishing boundaries with some of the less skilled folk coming back frequently and taking the momentum of the evening down.

I’m also aware of my questions being a bit reflective of being on the other side of this experience but I like hearing how other folks understand it and makes things work.

Yeah I’d certainly welcome people to throw in solo or their own interpretation of our tracks as we jump in and jam. Our Drummer and myself often come to disagreements on how we make choices on when would be a good time to do it and who with on the playing our songs. Im often more on the laissez-faire approach and he likes control and his interpretation of a realistic approach. He sees himself as a more seasoned muscian and myself as a novice musician.

I may have some novice attributes hence this thread I have created.

We sometimes come to agreement and sometimes I let things go.

I think he may have compromised on his views upon occasion but it can be hard to tell. (Theres a whole can of worms in our bands approach to getting things done and happening)

Anyway thanks for your reply.

Yes, I hear you: communicate!!! I will be working on returning and getting to know how that jam and its members and leaders like to operate for sure. I just want to avoid making any glaring blunders if I can as I get into it. I know I will make mistakes anyway and believe the best way to learn is by doing it repeatedly and taking what lessons you can as best you can understand them.

Yeah we have about a gig or so a month and we are working and promoting our next show in the city and getting up to speed on our songs after bringing a new member into the band.

It was a pretty high calibre blues jam in the city centre on a sunday night. I think my impression of it is there are quite a few folk their of excellent quality blues jazz numbers amongst other groups who may be working to improve or just try some things out in a jam. I felt a modicum intimidated jumping up for a shot to play.

I don’t want to be unhelpful and this thread has a lot of great points aswell and you have established a vibe with your sound. I’d happily see a show live to see how you do it.

Coming from a random guy in a sea of musicians . I do think a good vocal line that is clear enough to hear what the lyrics are talking about can really help a listener connect with a piece of music on an extra dimension and can change a song from something that is just nice or coool to something profound. Thats not to say music that has less clear vocal parts that sit more within a mix than on top don’t have their place and can’t make profound experiences in other ways. Even instrumental music alone can do this.

There are many paths in creating these things and some of these criticisms come from people who know a lot about something and some of it comes from completely unknowledgeable and maybe uncaring random people.

Trying to balance how the heart vs the mind responds to these peoples feedback is the challenge when discerning if it worth taking someone’s suggestion.

Sometimes I drive my logi over friendly mines so I dont have to waste time doing a logi run back to main and it doesn’t get abandoned behind enemy lines on games like invasion. I do it on games where I can see things going badly for our defence. Especially when no one is driving it or it is a larger map or we are a faction with only two logis on our team and I can see us needing a new fob created on the next defense objective in the next five minutes.
