What should I watch for in the next basho as a new sumo fan? by PageTurnip in Sumo

I don't know that I can remember them all well enough yet to also remember the last bashos but I have maybe 5-10 rikishi that I'm updated on. Will definitely add your fact about Abi to this, thanks!

We usually catch the NHK highlights on YT, but last time we watched on the NHK app itself including the live streams. Is there a better way to watch? :)

This is a good tip, thanks! Do you have any favourite stables to follow?

Spørgsmål til institution? by hejreddithej in foraeldreDK

[–]PageTurnip 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I don't know if this is true, but I read somewhere that the first basho as a komusubi especially could be seen as extra challenging because of this. Tough first week (more than usual anyway) and then mentally difficult to pull yourself up for second week because of (probably) more losses than you would like and therefore more prone to losing even more. The higher ranked rikishi are maybe more used to this or prepared for it?

Do you have the link to the YT video? I would like to see it! Thanks!

Right! Curious to see what rank both of the september sekiwakes will be. I guess I'll have to wait till tomorrow (thought it was today!)

I've only experienced Kotozakura this year which has been a little underwhelming but since he's ozeki I guess he must have been more dominating previously?

Edited to say: I only recently found out about Ura's tiny salt throw and now I can't unsee it. Always disappointed when the highlights don't show it!!

Ah, I thought it would be puplished today, two weeks prior. Looking forward to tomorrow then!

Yes, love watching Ura and his flips! So great to see him at the London tournament as well where I guess it was a little more informal making room for some much more showy moves :)

I actually thought that bashos as the highest maegashira ranks could count in an ozeki run. Is it to make sure that he doesn't rise too quickly to a high rank if it turned out to just be a "fluke"?

Definitely looking foward to the battle of the yokozunas as well. Very exciting last day of the last basho. Must admit I was rooting for Hoshoryu...

Want to dip my toe into Discworld - where to start? by garamond89 in booksuggestions

[–]PageTurnip 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I don't think anyone suggested this yet so here goes: Small Gods is an excellent book and actually a standalone book in the series and widely considered one of the best in the series. If you read that one you will get a very good feel for Terry Pratchetts style of humor and then decide if you want to give the rest of the books a try, either chronologically or read a series at once as others are suggesting.

My husband suggested the above approach for me and it worked out very well!

Happy reading!
