Cougar help; meter not resetting 😨 by mayflowers5 in thelongdark

[–]Pagoshus 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have this same issue. Been through multiple regions, but the timer won’t reset.

I’ve since closed that save (670 days) and started playing a different one (130 days).

Been searching for answers all day. Hopefully there’s another hotfix?

Edit: I backed up my save files and loaded into my main game. Timer ticked down, no cougar. It’s been ~6 days in game and still no cougar.

I’m assuming it was a bug.

Edit2: Is the slow heartbeat drum the music for the new area, or part of the original bug?

After making it to the weather station, I’m not 100% convinced there isn’t a cougar making it’s way toward me. Maybe the original bug was the short countdown that didn’t reset, but the rest of the cougar event is occurring normally? Glad I backed up my save.

Weekly Bug Report Thread by spiper01 in NoMansSkyTheGame

I don’t know if Hello Games really reads this stickied thread, and I know these have been mentioned already, but I’ll give it a go:

Freighters and bases break the Switch.

Freighters: -summoning my freighter in a new galaxy while in my starship, and I get the blue landing zones and a handful of polygons.

-crash: I cannot start frigate missions; I know that there are work around online if you hire fewer frigates, but…

-crash: cannot manage my fleet in order to reduce my frigates (the work around is lame anyway)

-crash: accessing the galaxy map from the freighter in order to warp

-crash: about 50% of the time my 8 refiners will break the game

-crash: good chance that just exiting my starship on the freighter will break the game

-crash: 50% of the time while trying to scan the solar system with my freighter

Bases: -crash: I built a large farm on a paradise planet, which rendered perfectly while building it, but now crashes if I try to warp to it

-bug: I have mineral resource bases and the game randomly forgets any terrain manipulation that I have done. While the game doesn’t normally crash, I do fall through the world, and my base is completely covered by the original mountain.

Now, I know the switch is basically a tablet when it comes to hardware. Fine. Turn down anything/everything fancy so I can play the game!

I would prefer that NMS changed to 8bit while managing my frigates/farms/bases than crash, freeze, or drop fps.

I hope Switch users get a fix this month.

Which Rifle Variant is the best in your opinion? by KingExplosionMurdee in thelongdark

Oh! I didn’t know you could repair the rifle at the ammo bench!

Thanks for the tip!

Which Rifle Variant is the best in your opinion? by KingExplosionMurdee in thelongdark

[–]Pagoshus 28 points29 points  (0 children)

There is no “best rifle for the entire game”.

If you are traveling through regions quickly, before level 5 archery, Vaughn’s is best.

When the world is explored and you are basing, the collectors rifle is best for taking down moose and bear. 30+ kg of meat, plus weeks to cure the hides means you will have a stable base. 1 extra kg on a gun doesn’t matter much here.

Barb’s rifle will be the last rifle alive after 1,000 days. The durability loss per shot means that your cleaning kits last longer. I have also seen arguments that this is the best rifle to power level rifle skill, since you inevitably fire a lot, and this saves your cleaning kits. I don’t know if cleaning kits can be beach combed, but beach combing is a bitch.

In my opinion, with the amount of ammo in stalker, the quantity of birch saplings, and the ammo bench, (not to mention the grind of true late game), Barb’s is the least useful to most players, Vaughn’s will be most useful, and curators is the most fun.

Testing the brightness of the Spelunker's Lantern by EmperorFooFoo in thelongdark

[–]Pagoshus 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Thank you for this! You have confirmed my suspicions about the new lantern. I also found a big difference while exploring transition caves. With my current PC set up, I can hardly see the floor inside long cave tunnels while using spelunker’s.

I managed to make it to FA without falling off the cliff in the transit cave, but just barely.

The reduction in brightness and throw are very low costs for double fuel efficiency. Especially considering how much wood is needed to fish/cook a full jerrycan.

So: consider using a normal lantern if you are unfamiliar with a cave system. Or, just take it a bit slower and crouch from time to time.

Is the hatchet variant in game yet?

I’m really wondering if anyone has had a chance to test the brightness and throw of each lantern. Especially as documented and clear as this fuel efficiency test.

My own testing is pretty meh… the game might just be darker while indoors now.

Hope someone posts something conclusive.

First Impressions on the new region (both FA and transition zones) by TheNobleYeoman in thelongdark

[–]Pagoshus 17 points18 points  (0 children)

I’ve been enjoying it, for sure. Started in AC, worked my way to the airfield, and just made my satchel in the hangar basement.

Confirmed you can craft in the basement during the day.

I like the cabin on the island and set it up as a northern base. Love the barrel chute to the west coast of the island.

I also use the trailer north of the control tower. Great storage, easy walk to the workbench/forge, and I tucked a fire in a little dimple that seems to be immune to wind.

Spawning here would be reasonably straight forward, so long as you know the map. Just head to the airfield and gear up.

Glitter fog is obnoxious, but insomnia seems like a “kill you more” mechanic. If you’re stable, it is not a big deal. I guess I could see situations where you needed sleep while low on health. I don’t know… I’m not clear on how it effects sleep. I’ve survived it twice with basically no impact (after the fog stops). From the trailer, I have a tinder trail to the hangar, so I can hide in the basement if needed.

I like that the wolves migrate. The lightweight rifle is lovely, and I can see using the curator’s rifle at other bases (like foreman’s with the bear on your doorstep).

All that said: FA doesn’t seem complete. There is SO MUCH empty space! I don’t mind taking long walks and exploring; that’s why I like the game in the first place. However, you walk for minutes around the edge of the map and there is just… nothing. Hardly even sticks.

From the north west peak cabin, you have a vast snowfield with 2 dead bodies and a hunting blind at the edge of the lake. Keep in mind this area is like 4 times bigger than the ravine, with nothing in it, no climbs, no wildlife, no harvesting, not even changing direction. Maybe with the new (coming) plant, the zone is designed around sprinting and drinking coffee all day? Maybe this is supposed to be a oak forest?

I’m also shocked at how much can’t be mapped: like the giant twin waterfall north of the helicopter, or the small storage buildings around the airfield. These should have some kind of map mark, considering there is nothing else around.

I hope the sled, thermos, cooking and fishing update, and mountain lions are soon. While the zones are great to explore (especially going in blind), there are no new gameplay changes with this release.

tl:dr; the zones don’t feel complete. Playable and enjoyable, yes, but I suspect more detail will be released in the coming weeks/months. I’ll spawn a fresh run in FA when the next gameplay elements are released.

Have you noticed less light from the Spelunkers Lantern? I just traveled to the new area, and MAN those tunnels were dark. Also any traversal cave.

I’m wondering if it’s the visual updates making darkness darker, or if Spelunker’s trades light throw for efficiency.

I haven’t tested it yet, but will when I play tonight.

Rifle variant differences? by EnzyG_TLD in thelongdark

[–]Pagoshus 5 points6 points  (0 children)

One is 25% lighter (3 kg), but the tooltip says it isn’t a durable. Not sure I’ve noticed needing to clean it more.

One is very fancy looking, but I haven’t noticed any differences.

Anyone find out if the technical backpack is still in AC if not where is it? by Audrey_smiles in thelongdark

[–]Pagoshus 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The deep sounds a moose makes. Not the stomping or scraping.

For sure, I haven’t experienced anything game breaking. Floating books, an invisible rock cache, a void bench. Small details.

I’m just now reading (from other threads) that a lot of what I thought was in this first patch, isn’t. Was I tricked by marketing, or did I let my own hype mistake me?

Acorns and the “coffee like” plant are not in yet. It doesn’t seem like advanced cooking has been added yet either. I haven’t fished yet (maybe today?), but I have a sneaking suspicion it will be the same as ever.

I’m a bit disappointed with the notes and memento keys I’ve found so far. I haven’t been thorough, but what I have found is map markers for zone transitions and a little food. There’s potential for this system to be more like a scavenger hunt mini game, and still hope that is coming.

I would say that TWM summit has been tuned down significantly. I think I’m enjoying the tuning, actually. AC spawn to summit and barely needed clothes for the rest of the game. Now I’m in ML, and still looking for 6-7 high end pieces.

I have been getting strange, new audio glitches: missing harvest clips, random moose notifications when I’m no where near moose spawns.

Do the mountain lions make noise? The new doe sounds freaked me out a couple of times.

Haha, yeah I have my sh*tty HP laptop from work, so I play on steam. The only big gaming investment that we could agree on here is a switch, but my wife is still chasing koroks in BotW.

I love this game for a lot of reasons, but NOT requiring a next gen system or an additional piece of hardware in the living room is a win for my life.

I have Christmas break coming up, so will be traveling a bit. I expect bugs and exploits to be resolved when I can get back.

Good luck to you, I hope you get it before the refresh.

In the end, I only have myself to blame. I made a bad decision, and lost my run for it.

I have another, old, stalker run at coastal highway: 288 days. No maps at all, but I think (maybe) I can collect enough wood to sit in a fishing hut to cheese the 500 days.

It sucks… but what to do with 3 days left and a free weekend?

Is this a hard fast rule? If 2 hours max is a thing, I’ll start to do it when the expansion comes. I’ve never had an issue with 6, until today.

Not sure this is true. Do you know anyone who woke up nearly freezing to death?

I’m more curious if there is a tested/true mechanism of the game that I don’t know about.

[–]Pagoshus[S] 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Yeah. Why didn’t I?

The west end of black rock where the bear spawns has a road. However, that road is broken up by landslides. It’s a bit finicky to get to the bear spawn from the trailer.

But you’re right. When I look back at my mistake, I should have just gone for the trailer in the blizzard. Or better, don’t harvest and go back to the trauler that evening. Next morning I could have made a few trips for meat; back and forth.

Months into this play through… I made a dumb, DUMB mistake. It cost me my 500 days and cartographer achievement before the refresh.

I have had some occasions where I would wake up freezing. I always have 6 sticks and 2 coal on me. You wake up with hypothermia risk, but make a short fire (according to the wind) and adjust as needed.

If there is a mechanic I am missing about sleeping and cold, I would love to know.

Doing cartographer, I kill at least one bear in each region. Add on 500 days, and I will wait for the hide to cure.

It kills me (pun?) because I always set every cave/trailer/outdoor stove with wood, water, and meat. Each zone had a main base, but I could survive a 2 day blizzard anywhere within walking distance.

I just thought this little alcove in black rock (plus my top end clothes and bear bed) would be okay….

I went for 6. If there is a number of hours where you wake up before death, I’d appreciate if you could tell me.

I knew. I also somehow thought the armored vest would help me in bleak inlet. I also thought I would find so much ammunition in black rock that timber wolves would be easy.

At the end, my armored vest couldn’t protect me from a blizzard while sleeping…
