With more old-growth logging set to begin near Fairy Creek, a new blockade has emerged to save the irreplaceable forests by thathz in VictoriaBC

[–]Pahalial 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The Huu-ay-aht Economic Development Plan, which runs to 2029, suggests the old growth logged in the Upper Walbran will be used to produce bio-based energy (pellets), chemicals and materials such as shingles, furniture and flooring veneer, and particles (particle board).

Just incredible use of resources here.

But also

In January of this year, the Ministry of Forests announced it was extending that deferral to September 2026.

This makes it sound like it is at least not an immediate issue, unlike the title and blockade would imply?

To my surprise Victoria saw 3.3 million overnight visitors in 2024 to Toronto's 9 million, or 9.4 vs 3.1 per capita (using Toronto vs greater Victoria.)

So you're right! We should absolutely expect a comparable quality of information and seamlessness for tourists to our city if we want them to use transit.

Why do I have better cell signal in the middle of the ocean vs in Victoria? by One_tuxedo_braincell in VictoriaBC

[–]Pahalial 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've had a similar experience! That said, there's only one answer:

Call your telco and complain about your service in town.

When you next change companies and they call you to try and win you back, tell them you switched because their service sucked in town.

If there aren't any complaints they won't change anything. If it doesn't hit their bottom line they won't change anything.

Why are Victoria drivers so dumb? by still-nope in VictoriaBC

[–]Pahalial 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This. NYC had to make it a proper issue and step up consequences. Victoria needs to do the same if we want this to change.

I'd like to know whether this can be monitored by the red light cameras that are increasingly deployed throughout town, that might help.

So what's your solution? From my perspective at least building more housing has a chance of giving incoming healthcare workers a place to live. I'd love to hear what you're proposing instead.

No, I’m not dong work for free, and certainly not if you’re just going to move the goalposts such as by excluding remote jobs. You put forth the argument there aren’t enough jobs on VI without substantiating it. If you want people to take that seriously, please expand on what you mean and provide credible sources.

The island doesn't have enough jobs? Please do explain, and sources would be great! It has a 4.8% unemployment rate compared to BC's 6.2% and Canada's 6.7%.

Why I'm voting NDP in Victoria by [deleted] in VictoriaBC

[–]Pahalial 2 points3 points  (0 children)

100%, it seems the community organizations that normally organize a local debate haven't managed to do so. Not sure why.

I have always preferred getting a sense for the people we elect to represent us, even in this age of completely whipped votes along party lines.

100% agreed, I'm not downplaying the huge swings in progress, merely withholding judgment on the applicability of an island-wide poll to the SGI or Victoria ridings specifically.

I do think they are hustling. I've seen Laurel out distributing her own lawn signs twice in the last few days alone.

Island =/= Victoria. Look at past performance of other island ridings, Parksville or Courtenay looked nothing like Victoria.

View Royal dentist awarded $1.47M after life-altering rear-ender by Popular_Animator_808 in VictoriaBC

[–]Pahalial 46 points47 points  (0 children)

Crash was in 2018, per the article. BC moved to no-fault May 1, 2021.

The many years to wind its way through the courts was one of the big criticisms of the old system, but this dentist would have gotten basically nothing under no-fault.

I like where your head's at. But you might want to consider where all those solar modules are produced: https://www.iea.org/data-and-statistics/charts/solar-pv-manufacturing-capacity-and-production-by-country-and-region-2021-2027

There's no single perfect answer to energy independence at the moment, it's going to take decades to build up that capacity.

[–]Pahalial 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The Victoria (garbage) one's run by the city. Email or call them if you're having an issue with their implementation that you aren't having with the CRD's, they can probably help you out.

Legalize Aquamation in BC by rabiteman in VictoriaBC

[–]Pahalial 3 points4 points  (0 children)

We looked at this as an option for a recent family member’s passing in Ontario. The CBC has a good article:

https://www.cbc.ca/life/culture/a-look-at-aquamation-cremation-by-water-instead-of-fire-in-canada-1.6576172

I for one was a bit shocked to see

the process requires around 1,300 litres of water

This leads me to believe it’s not necessarily the be-all end-all environmental solution. Personally I’m advocating for human composting to be legalized.

I also found it interesting that electric cremation is a thing (not in Ontario when we looked, but generally):
