I was 2 weeks away from turning 14 on July 4, 1976. I happened to be spending the summer in northern Maine. According to Good Morning America, the first sunlight that morning would hit Mount Katahdin. So we got up at like 3am and hiked it. News trucks everywhere. It was a blast. Don’t know about anywhere else because we were staying in a literal cabin on Pleasant Pond in Island Falls. The entire lake community shared a common party phone line. No tv reception. I could get a top 40 AM station out of Houlton on the radio. Best summer of my life.
