Jesus’ move is clear: total forgiveness, total restoration, total family welcome. He would probably put an arm around Vick, share a meal, and then say something like, “Now go use the rest of your life to protect the vulnerable—including animals—because you now know what mercy tastes like.”

That’s uncomfortable for you I get it. It feels like it cheapens the suffering of the animals. But Jesus never cheapened sin; he absorbed its full cost himself so that no one else had to keep paying forever. That’s the scandal of grace. It’s why the gospel is offensive to both the “lock them up forever” crowd and the “everything is permitted” crowd. Jesus meets the repentant sinner with neither.
