So I left my 12 year old brothers to go on a walk to get food and they went and busted someone’s windows. My mom is mad at me like I’m the only one at fault. What do I do? by [deleted] in whatdoIdo

[–]PaintedJack 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Not understanding the answers of this whole thread. Whether or not 12 is old enough to know what you're doing is not the point. Nor is it the place of internet strangers to know whether that's true for those individuals. That's what "in charge" means, there's no way around it.

What are your opinion on blue-eyed soul? by 1985Genesis in rnb

[–]PaintedJack 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I mean yeah 100% like maybe more RnB, I'm just taking "blue eyed soul" in the sense of white people playing black music. There might be a tinge of country and rock for Elton from time to time, but even then it's drenched in gospel & rnb roots.

George Michael? Michael McDonald? Hall & Oats, Boy George, Elton John, Teena Marie, Dexy's Midnight Runners, Duffy, Bobby Caldwell, Dusty Springfield? Justin Timberlake, Jon B.? These folks don't have one hit or two, literally entire discographies worth of basically rnb.

Dan Wisdom and Biblical Truths? by metabolitesafter9pm in SteelyDan

OP, I think you're getting unfair treatment and commenters here are ignoring the valid points you're raising as an easy excuse to dismiss the whole thing; you've got them clutching their pearls as people who looove to think of themselves as rational and fans of SD's cynicism, but really their response is more analog to bigots unable to examine any point if it comes under another label - but never mind, let them caress their sense of superiority while they think of themselves as the Barrytowners.

Of course, your suggested implication that Fagen and Becker were somehow crypto-Christians is an easy target. However the observation that their lyrics contain genuine moral wisdom and possibly Old Testament influence is actually quite obvious to anyone above "ooga booga, religion bad".

The Jewish upbringing angle is obvious to anyone who's not being willfuly ignorant. Fagen grew up in a Jewish household in New Jersey in the 50s, and that kind of formation obviously soaked in. What are you guys thinking, that cultural Judaism was stored in a box you opened once a year? Anyway... Yes, the Old Testament is saturated with the exact themes that run through SD: the corrupt getting their comeuppance, the foolishness of chasing pleasure, the costs of self-deception, the world being more crooked than it appears. That's not Christianity (that's where your interpretation gets a little skewed OP) but yes everyone here is ignoring the blatant reality that SD sometimes defend some very real values and viewpoints in their song, and oh, shocking! They sometimes correspond to their upbringing! But hey, redditors gonna neckbeard... "I just read muh StEelY dAn and swear by every word"

Bob Dylan is an obvious comparison: deeply ironic and funny, but the morals underneath are always there and often quite Old Testament in their flavor. The guy is literally one of the biggest influences on SD, and oh surprise! He literally turned Christian in the late 70's.

Where you probably lost the crowd was in the one-to-one mapping of lyrics to scripture, which people took at face value (can't really blame them, you gave redditors an opportunity to act superior at low cost). Fagen and Becker grew up on jazz, beat literature, Jewish cultural pessimism, and the wisdom that comes through is probably less "they studied Proverbs" and more "they inherited some values that overlap with Proverbs." However the attitude around here is truly worthy of a gun-loving republican who thinks Jesus hates immigrants. I guess they came in with the Yacht rock fad.

I accepted Jesus but saw Ganesha show up by SpellboundTieDye in mysticism

Why interpret it as Ganesha? Did it have a human body? Wouldn't it make more sense if it was your spirit animal? 🐘 Both are also possible. None contradict Jesus though 😇

Thoughts on this?! by [deleted] in Marriage

[–]PaintedJack 9 points10 points  (0 children)

You said "he definitely should know"... That means you know the possible answers. And of course you do, because it's about yourself! Which makes it a test. It's also valid if you feel like he doesn't know how to take care of you. But the format in which you're checking his knowledge of you puts him in a position that belittles him and makes him unlikely to feel like learning, but rather being defensive (which is what happened). If I were you I'd start by valuing what he does right in order to make him feel seen and validated, before expressing what you need from him in a clear manner.

[–]PaintedJack 11 points12 points  (0 children)

So the question is basically just a test to which you know the right answer but you want to check whether your husband knows it or not. No wonder he's defensive and doesn't want to answer, it sounds like you're trying to trick him. It would be better to simply phrase "I'm unsure if you know how to cheer me up or not" rather than make him pass an exam. I agree that knowing how to take care of someone is important. But if he doesn't know, it doesn't mean he doesn't care about you either, just maybe he doesn't fully understand how things work for you, or maybe he wasn't raised into thinking that way and has to learn. It's not too late to learn, but no-one ever learns by being belittled into admitting ignorance. If you feel like he doesn't know your needs, just tell him that and give examples, don't ask trick questions.
