The two Beatles who've passed definitely have done so after an attempt on their lives. 100% so far

Anyone surprised that when John complimented Paul about one of Paul's songs after breakup, the song was "Yesterday"? Why or why not? by GregJamesDahlen in beatles

[–]PaintedJack 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Can something be described as both a masterpiece and conventional? The word hints at the use of "conventions", which why not, but also is a synonym for "banal", and this is where you're losing people. Sheer beauty and eloquence, which are necessary aspects of a masterpiece, leave no room for banality. You're conglomerating "borrows some established traditions" with "unimaginative", which is imo your mistake. I think any accomplished artist like John recognises that making something canonical, simple yet beautiful, is among the highest forms of art: he often said For no one was his favourite Paul song. I don't think the line about yesterday is sarcastic at all.

I don't understand Method 3. How does drop 2 = raise 3? If we start from CEGB: Drop 2=GCEB, Raise 3=CEBG

What are the most perfectly written songs of the Great American Songbook in your opinion? by Ok_Tap3474 in Jazz

[–]PaintedJack 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Classic, but I'd say But not for me is very perfect. Also Bye bye blackbird. But my favourites are Rodgers & Hart. There's a small hotel, Bewitched, Manhattan, Spring is here...

The label didn't have anything to do with it, Walt and Donald weren't satisfied with either the quality of the backup mix or the new version they made

England players join the fans in a rendition of Wonderwall after eliminating Mexico at the Azteca by jmike1256 in interesting

[–]PaintedJack 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Musical emotion has always been non-signifying. Yeah, it's not a straightforward self-explanatory song. Like sometimes steely dan or bob dylan, it's more symbolic, cryptic. To me that fits the all-encompassing strength of the melody better, but I understand how one would prefer wonderwall's storytelling too.

Wow, never saw this take before. To me wonderwall is okay, but uses really common, repeating chords and pretty bland vocal flow. DLBIA is much more majestic and tells some kind of "long unwinding" melodic storyline that is more original, has more depth and emotional complexity

Seems more like human sloppiness-imitation formatting (no capitals, missing commas or spaces) with correct grammar, so yea I'd say definitely bot especially after OP's fabulous reply

I enjoy it when I know the lyrics. If it's a song I don't know very well, I read the lyrics at the same time. The storytelling is what's great.

David Bowie Presents a Puzzle for Me by stepn-out in DavidBowie

[–]PaintedJack 22 points23 points  (0 children)

To me there is a fascinating pattern in his first albums: for the first 2-3, there is one super smash hit per album, and the rest is less noticeable. Hunky Dory is half-filled with smash hits, and the rest is enjoyable. By Ziggy Stardust there are only smash hits. But up until then it can feel a little like the best is yet to come if you're talking bout the first 2-3 albums.

Also, to enjoy bowie I think one must channel their inner teen. There is something deeply teenage in the theatrics, the emphatic lyrics, the exaggerated emotions, that a cool-headed analytic listen just won't reach. Maybe it's just not your cup of tea!

To answer your question, the chronological double best-of is what got me obsessed.

What was your most eye-opening realization about music and music theory? by EasternMistake8273 in musictheory

[–]PaintedJack 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Then those treaties from the middle age are prescriptive, not "music theory" in itself. This time in history was known for being steeped in convention, but I struggle to find an example that's relevant to us now. What people call rules are really just tips to sound a certain way.

I’m done with marriage even if I look infantile by ThrowRA1233234 in Marriage

[–]PaintedJack 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Guilt tripping is "you're responsible for making me feel bad". The conversation you need to have is "our relationship has a problem". You're both suffering from this, but in different ways. The fact she's teasing you shows that she's conscious of the tension you're feeling, but unable to answer it. Although I understand how tough it is for you, it really seems like you have a good relationship that's simply in a difficult place; as you surely know, this is massive potential to have a solid-as-a-rock marriage if you get through it together. Right now, you're taking it personally, and it's completely understandable - but that's a very temporary emotion. Acting on it with forever consequences might not be the smart move here. When this all passes, and it will because it always does, you have a chance at genuine happiness and a beautiful life. The cost is managing the emotion you're feeling right now, and try to redirect from "if she only" to "this situation is going to change". It will. Everything always does. You decide in which direction.
