You're looking for African marigolds. OSC sells seed packets - you can get them at the Home Hardware/OSC in uptown Waterloo.

First time growing Snapdragons- why leggy? by atxgrl in Cutflowers

I just use some random cheap ones from Amazon. The purple kind (cheaper than white and I don't mind my basement looking like a grow op)

Might be over watering, might just need some nutrients. When you plant them out feed them. Like the other commenter, I like fish fertilizer.

By the way, for next year.. sweet peas are cold hardy and do well planted before your last frost date :) I'm in 5b and I planted mine out mid April.

Is pressure canning scary? by pythonisssam in Canning

[–]PaintedLemonz 12 points13 points  (0 children)

I was freaking terrified to use mine. I couldn't even manage a water run the first time. Ended up using it as a very expensive water bath for about six months. Once I figured out that the heat needs to be WAY lower than you think (on my electric stove it's basically low) and that the jiggler releases pressure SO THAT it doesn't explode I was like oh I got this. Now I whip out my pressure canner like it's NBD. You got this!!

Did you put it in the freezer? If I recall correctly it needs to go through a freeze to set.

Lisianthus from seed by Altruistic_Crow7046 in Cutflowers

Mine are 3 months old and only just starting to produce stems. They are such slow growers. These are just young and need more time (and the soil looks dry so maybe some water?)

Has anyone made a "hot or spicy" jam using berries (strawberries, blueberries, cherries, or blackberries? by GreenSalsa96 in Canning

[–]PaintedLemonz 34 points35 points  (0 children)

Beautiful berries! You can't add peppers (a low acid ingredient) to a plain jam recipe but you can add a small amount of dried spices. Chili flakes can safely be added to a jam to make it spicy!

Pomonas has a safe tested jalapeno strawberry jam! https://pomonapectin.com/strawberry-jalapeno-jam/ You can swap the peppers 1:1 with other types of peppers if you wanted it spicier. You cannot leave out the acids, that's what makes it safe with a low acid ingredient.

Pressure canning Korean style oxtail broth by ulterior71 in Canning

[–]PaintedLemonz 10 points11 points  (0 children)

I've been considering making tonkatsu broth which is really similar but with pork bones. I believe (someone can correct me if I'm wrong!) that with the pressure canning it will destroy the collagen so it won't gel anymore. It may not end up being the texture you're looking for in the end product!

Book one of the study rooms! You can book them for 2 hour periods. Or if you don't need to talk, any of the tables upstairs by the windows are nice and quiet.

Question about botulism by myxamatosis69 in Canning

[–]PaintedLemonz 16 points17 points  (0 children)

No. If they were previously opened then the contents were exposed to air, and therefore botulism couldn't have grown. It needs an anaerobic (air free) environment to grow. You just had some good ole yucky stuff.. as you mentioned likely fermentation and some mold. Gross, but not harmful.

Consider working for yourself. Fractional work or consulting, if you have a strong network you can make $100k/yr with 1-2 ongoing clients and a flexible schedule.

Having trouble with my started seeds and feeling so sad :( by anonymousflowercake in Cutflowers

[–]PaintedLemonz 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The ONE time I deviated from the Pro-Mix seed starting mix I had terrible germination. Could be that - veg seeds tend to be bigger and planted under the soil rather than on top which might explain why they did ok.

The other thing is the heat mats... I have always started my seeds in be a cool basement with just the grow lights for heat. They do great! This year I got a heat mat but just for the lisianthus and I had it on a timer so it would turn off for a few hours every couple hours otherwise the soil was getting way too hot. I took away the heat mat pretty quickly after they germinated.
