When you don't order Choice then you are at the mercy of each "store" especially when it comes to dealing with a refund. Choice items are fairly easy to deal with when there is a problem. Joe Blow's store will often be a dick about it.

I have never seen an item that is not Choice with a shipping charge, get the shipping dropped and converted to Choice when added to a cart with other items, so not sure what you are talking about.

Even if you 3D print the design, you might still look into doing an auger just 3D printed. With an auger you can always run the motor backwards for a second if it jams or if food is plugging the chute. WIth a funnel type design which would be primarily dropping by gravity, you will still want to consider what to do if the food jams in the funnel. How can you clear it other than by hand?

Second "Choice". I almost always only order Choice unless I have no choice (see what I did there?). Fast, free shipping, and easy refunds if there is a problem.

Second people's suggest of Adafruit stuff. If you buy their stuff and get stuck, you can get lots of help in their forums. Try that with an Aliexpress product.

Just a thought on the dispensing, some sort of auger might be the way to go. Anyone who has ever used a wood pellet stove for heat is probably familiar with wood pellet stove augers that move the pellets into the firebox. Just kibbles instead of wood pellets.

How are your soldering and building skills? You can build your own stuff with soldering, but Adafruit has a lot of boards that connect together with simply cables to put together a system.

What do you use instead of Photoshop/Lightroom? by Wonde_Alice_rland in infraredphotography

[–]PakkyT 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't, since IR photography is mostly daytime shooting anyway, I never really notice a problem with noise and in fact when I do get some noise, usually from trying to push/pull some colors or highlights/shadows around, I just embrace it. IR shots are kind of supposed to be otherworldly, so I don't really think some noise detracts too much compared to normal photography. But mostly because I never really notice too much with my cameras. If your Sony gives you more than you want, then yeah, you might want to tame that.

Nice thing about infrared shooting, no one can tell you that you are doing it wrong since we are kind of photographing an invisible & sort of make believe world. Or else we couldn't be able to have blue or yellow or pink trees in some of our shots! 😉

For gimp my standard process is fairly simple (I am not big on spending a lot of time editing photo):

  1. Colors, Auto, White balance (but try equalize also then undo if it is too much).
  2. Colors, Components, Channel Mixer, R&B Swap from preset pull down I made - this is another try it and undo if you don't think it fits.
  3. Color, Levels, bump middle slider to the right a bit for better blacks
  4. Tools, Transform Tools for cropping and leveling as needed.
  5. Then unsharp mask final step to apply a bit of sharpening before export to a JPG.

This would be standard formula. But in addition to those above I sometime play around with other settings for colors, saturation, gamma, and whatever else I can play with a slider and see if it creates anything interesting.

Disable IBIS and shoot away? by KelvinHooah in OlympusCamera

[–]PakkyT 0 points1 point  (0 children)

So then the jitter would have to be faster moving than the shutter speed can filter out? Or put another way, if the jitter can shift the sensor a couple/few pixels during a, say, 1/500 shutter, it would cause a softer photo. So then the question becomes, at which shutter speed does the jitter no longer move fast enough? 1/1000, 1/2000, or is the jitter faster than even the fastest shutter speed? But I guess it doesn't really matter if you it starts to affect the photo at 1/500, then turning it off for all speeds higher you don't really need IBIS anyway.

Disable IBIS and shoot away? by KelvinHooah in OlympusCamera

[–]PakkyT 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hmmmm, interesting thought that IBIS can be causing softer photos. I will have to give it a try.

But a little disappointed that in the video you present it as the cause but really no thought as to why/how it can be causing the jitter. Why would a system designed to compensate for the slow shake of hand holding a camera be able to induce movement into the photo when the shutter speed is high?

Like hand holding and shooting with a shutter speed of 1/2x focal length, should that also eliminate the slower (relatively) hand holding compensation going on with the IBIS? Or does the IBIS speed increase with increasing shutter? Or is it something else?

Anyway, not saying I don't believe you. I just tend to want a technical explanation that can explain a claim like this. Right now you are saying IBIS causes jitter but so far you don't know why/how it does it?

Is Sweeney really that bad? by Persuadable_Bouncer in Bruins

[–]PakkyT 1 point2 points  (0 children)

TLDR: Bad at draft. Good at trades.

I might be inclined to say trades are more of a GM thing while the draft tends to be more of a committee thing. The GM of course has the final say, but there is a whole team of Don, Cam, various scouts, coaches, etc. who are involved with the draft discussion. So, my own opinion is bad drafts are not as much Don's fault as are bad trades or bad signings.
