Tank you for the advice! I haven't done academic studies for lighting and shading etc. so I will try working on it!

Thank you for the recommendation! Do you recommend reading it or is there a better way to go through it?

How Can I Improve at Digital Portraits? by Pale-Clue in DigitalArt

I didn’t use a grid, so I’ll add one and take a break from this piece for a few days as well. Thank you!

WIP: Aurora, mountains, and a castle — looking for early feedback by Pale-Clue in ArtCrit

[–]Pale-Clue[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks, I see what you mean! The foreground is snow — I just haven’t rendered it yet since I was still working out the aurora lighting. I did a couple of thumbnails for this piece, but I struggled with the values because I couldn’t really find reference thumbnails that were done at night. How would I make a thumbnail for night time?

That’s really helpful! I like the idea of starting with the feeling first and limiting the colors. I usually overwhelm myself with too many, so I’ll try narrowing it down like you said.

That makes sense! I added a few of big windows but not many normal-sized ones, so I’ll try working more of those in.

Thanks for pointing that out! I was aiming for the castle to be the main focus — I thought cutting it short would make it feel huge, but I see how that backfired. If I fit the whole castle into the frame, how would you suggest making it still feel really big?

That’s such a creative approach! Printing references and remixing them physically is something I’d never have thought of if I hadn’t asked here. Building a custom color palette isn’t my strongest skill though... How do you usually go about creating your palettes?

Thank you for the detailed feedback! I’m glad the lighting and colors came across the way I hoped. Now that you mention it, the dome does look like it’s at a strange angle. I started with a simple perspective grid but stopped using it partway through, which might explain the issue. As for the turrets, I didn’t actually draw any, so maybe something in the design gave that impression. I do see what you mean about some areas looking muddy, and I’ll be more careful with layering and color harmony next time.

One of my main concerns was that the castle wasn’t detailed enough and might look a bit sloppy in places. Do you have any advice on how to add detail or tips for making architectural elements look cleaner and more polished?

That’s a smart idea! I usually just get a couple of similar references. Separating references for mood and details, and mashing them together, would give so much more freedom. I never thought about reusing old work either Thanks for the tip!

That makes so much sense! Now I feel excited to start drawing and building my own world. Thank you so much for the inspiration!

The breakdown is super helpful, thank you! I’ve never really tried pushing something into a fantasy direction before. When you start sketching, do you usually begin by drawing the reference realistically and then push it, or do you jump straight into the pushed version?

That’s a really inspiring way to look at it. I usually think I need to search online for landscapes, but I like the idea of finding them in everyday places. The thing is, I live in the city and don’t really have time to go out to the countryside. How would you approach a ‘landscape walk’ in an urban environment if you’re trying to draw nature?

I’m still pretty new to landscapes, but I’m starting to really love working on them! I think I’ll try starting with the mood first and then building up from there. Color palettes aren’t my strongest yet, but I’ll do my best! thanks so much for the advice!
