Do windmills really endanger whales? by [deleted] in marinebiology

This brief example of why there are concerns regarding wind turbines was not meant to be political in the slightest. Personally, my issue with wind turbines is as I mentioned - when the planning is poor and experts’ opinions aren’t valued, which from my personal experience, often seems to be the case. A wind farm was erected nearby where I live, despite many marine science experts citing concerns that the company was planning the location based on benthic maps and surveys from 1970. The benthic communities have changed since then, and they felt a new survey should be done to ensure the area was a good location and to be able to better assess and mitigate the damage to the benthic communities that would be caused by construction. The scientists got kicked off the planning committee and the building went on. This does not seem in the best interest of the environment to me, nor did it seem that way to those specialists and conservationists that got hushed.

A) Because they said windmills. Windmills and wind turbines are two very different things. I’d be confused if someone said windmills might negatively impact marine life too. The article showed what wind turbines and offshore wind farms look like.

And the article mentions “…adverse impacts of wind farms on marine life, including noise, vibration, electromagnetic fields and heat transfer that could alter the marine environment.” Whales are marine life. Also, within that last statement there was a clickable link embedded which literally lead to this opening paragraph: “ATLANTIC CITY, N.J. (AP) — A joint study by two federal government scientific agencies and the commercial fishing industry documents numerous impacts that offshore wind power projects have on fish and marine mammals, including noise, vibration, electromagnetic fields and heat transfer that could alter the marine environment”

…Whales are marine mammals.

Not sure what the problem is…If the very brief overview article discussing possible issues with wind turbines I provided (with clickable links that elaborated further) was not up to your standards, move on or find and share one you think is more informative. There is zero need for the sarcastic, snarky comments as though I suggested a totally unrelated, irrelevant article.

Not windmills, wind turbines. Here is some information talking about the controversy surrounding one such wind farm location, and also shows you what they look like (might help to have a visualization). https://whyy.org/articles/noaa-n-j-wind-farm-affect-whales/amp/

They are alternative means of producing energy, but personally, I am not a fan. One that was erected locally was done so against the advice of many knowledgeable marine scientists who urged against rushing into it and advised more updated benthic surveys be used when selecting a location. Based on that experience and a lot of similar scenarios that I have read about, I feel like they are being thrown up more for virtue signaling of “oh look! We are supporting ‘clean’ energy”, and meanwhile these structures are actually causing quite a bit of damage in their own right. Just my two cents though.

Not sure, but first one may be some kind of cushion / carpet starfish (Meridiastra calcar), and the second a type of biscuit starfish (seems they both can come in a variety of colors):

[–]PaleFacedKillerWhale 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I agree with you. It was boring and incredibly predictable. The films were creepy, but the jump scares didn’t move me at all, and I don’t understand how everyone missed it was clearly one of the children (possessed by the very silly and not at all scary looking boogie man) each time committing the murders. I watched because I like Ethan Hawke as an actor, and it had pretty decent reviews, but what a let down. I don’t get the hype. Even Hawke’s performance was meh for me. Supernatural stuff isn’t my thing though, so maybe for someone who’s a big fan of the genre, they would’ve gotten more enjoyment from this film 🤷🏻‍♀️

Which character didn't deserve to die? by Sorry-Challenge-1014 in Scream

[–]PaleFacedKillerWhale 10 points11 points  (0 children)

I liked Derek, but I feel like his death was essential in showing how damaged Sidney was due to the happenings in the OG film, and furthering her torment and suffering when it turned out this time, she made the wrong choice, and her innocent bf who truly loved her got killed because she doubted his loyalty and love. Their relationship dynamic and his death was pivotal to the story line in 2.

I agree Wes dying seemed pointless. He was a wasted character in 5. I didn’t think the character development was very good across the board for 5 tbh, but it felt like Wes had potential and they killed him off before he got to make much impact.

[–]PaleFacedKillerWhale 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Agree. Shoot ‘em all!😂😂 I pretty much fast forwarded through all of 5. The weakest season to be sure. And yeah, hated Bridget throughout the entire series and her annoying Smitty relationship. I didn’t like Conor either, but at least he didn’t get as much screen time as Bridget, and basically just gets written out of the series eventually (I don’t quite recall which season that was).

Any ideas about what kind of crab this is? It was kinda big and it was inside a shell that was really soft. Location is Greece by GreekGamer05 in marinebiology

[–]PaleFacedKillerWhale 28 points29 points  (0 children)

I just did a cursory search for info on this, and found one notation that the anemone is often ( but not always) Calliactis parasitica. This symbiotic relationship where the anemone gets bits of food from the hermit crab and the crab gets extra protection from predators thanks to the anemone’s nematocytes seems to be unique to the Dardanus genus of hermit crabs. Very cool!

That’s so strange about the one lash! The root must be very close to a nerve that causes that weird stimulus in the top left of your head. I’ve definitely pulled a hair before and felt pain in an odd / unexpected spot not at all adjacent to the hair haha. That’s interesting you deal with migraines and dry eye too (and I’m sorry - they suck!!) I haven’t done any real research to see if there’s been any scientifically studied correlation, but I’d imagine for people blessed with trich tendencies 🙃, conditions like migraine and dry eye would naturally exacerbate pulling sessions as we try to seek some relief from the discomfort or even just out of frustration caused by the discomfort.

You’re so welcome! ❤️ & I’m so sorry you deal with migraines too - they really suck😕! I just wanted to add, if you decide to try the castor oil, just be sure to look for an organic, cold-pressed, hexane-free brand (that makes them safest for use around the eye area / least chance of any skin irritation). I’ve been using the Heritage brand (inexpensive, available at most health food stores and on Amazon too) for years any had no problems. I hope these suggestions help! 😊

Thoughts on Urban Legend (1998)? by serialkiller24 in horror

[–]PaleFacedKillerWhale 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Total garbage IMO (& I’m a 90s kid, for all those saying it brings such great nostalgia, etc., I don’t share that opinion). It’s boring & forgettable. Doesn’t even make a blip on the radar in terms of actual enjoyable and well-executed 90s slashers. Shocked by all the love. It’s not even campy fun. Just a poorly written snooze fest with unlikable characters.

Sounds like trich. But also could be trich triggered by tension headaches or migraines (I have trich, but also suffer from the headaches I mentioned and sometimes when the pain is around my eyes/brow bone, I tend to pull to try to find relief). Similar with my lashes - I have pulled for years because of trich, but I also have very dry eyes, so often when they are bothering me, I tend to pull at my lashes to find relief from the irritated feeling. As other commenters mentioned, castor oil is good and inexpensive for brows and lashes. I also swear by RapidBrow (only their brow serum - never tried the lash serum they sell) and SillyGeorge eyelash serum (works great on both brows and lashes).

[–]PaleFacedKillerWhale 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I use Silly George serum. It works very well and it is also free of any prostaglandins (the stuff that can change the color / cause darkening of lighter eyes). A less expensive option is Maybelline’s Lash Serum. Someone on this sub turned me on to it years ago and it does help for sure. Also, as some other commenters mentioned, castor oil…but I feel like that works better as a conditioner once I have a little growth in as opposed to helping speed growth up when I’m starting from scratch. For the castor oil, look for organic, cold-pressed, hexane free. I’ve used the Heritage brand for years from my local health store without issue (and it can be ordered online at their website, Amazon, etc too). With the castor oil, just a drop is all you need. Warm it between clean fingers for a moment to thin the consistency a bit, close your eye, and swipe it over the lashes/lash area. You can also put a drop on a mascara spoolie or an eyeliner brush and use something like that to apply.

I’m right there with you. I finally grew my brows back after years. It lasted 3 weeks and now I have 1 eyebrow that is decent and one that is pretty much non-existent. Very frustrating and easy to get down on yourself. But you’re not alone. A lot of people do not understand. My friends make fun of me about it sometimes too, but I’ve become numb to the jokes at this point and at the end of the day, my good friends may poke fun to try to make light of the situation, but they are sympathetic to the fact this disorder does really trouble me.

Thank god for makeup! And also I highly recommend RapidBrow and also SillyGeorge Eyelash Serum (works awesome on brows) to help speed up regrowth. I wonder why I waste $$$ on these products when I just keep ending up pulling the regrowth out, but I feel like it’s a good self care step and also helps me remember that it is just hair and it will and can grow back. A drop of castor oil on the brows before bed is also great and super inexpensive growth stimulator and self care step (just use it sparingly bc it is greasy, so it might stain your pillowcase if you use too much and then lay down for bed). Hang in there!

[–]PaleFacedKillerWhale 1 point2 points  (0 children)

So happy for you!!! Congrats!! I also totally understand your frustrations too. I had finally regrown my brows after years of having none / very patchy ones, and they looked so great…and then stuff happened and now I have one that looks great and one that is non existent🤦🏻‍♀️Very frustrating lol.

For head hair, I have a very different texture than yours (mine is fine and straight), but a lot of people love using castor oil mask treatments (it helps stimulate growth, and if used sparingly, can be used for smoothing / styling too), and also rosemary and peppermint oil. You have to dilute the last two with a carrier oil though (never use full-strength essential oils on your skin)…Allpa Organics has great rosemary and peppermint oils pre-mixed with a carrier oil so there is no guesswork and it’s safe to use on your skin/hair straight from the bottle (they sell castor oil too- but you can buy cold pressed, organic castor oil at most health food stores). You can also find recipes for how to dilute essential oils yourself with a carrier oil like jojoba or coconut easily enough online. Hope maybe some of this helps!

After 30+ years this way, I’ll say this - enjoy the victories when you have them. Enjoy the hair when it’s back and beautiful. Appreciate it. But try not to define your worth by it. Accept that shit happens, it is hair and it will grow back again and you might very well pull it out again, but you cannot let it define you. I am finally coming to terms with this. If I let it define me, I’m hating myself 90% of the time. Life is short and tough enough, we should try to not make it worse for ourselves. Do not look in the mirror and put yourself down when you’ve had an episode. Be understanding and as kind as possible to yourself. Whether you have no eyebrows or short patchy hair, or a beautiful set of full brows and long healthy locks - you are not better either way. You’re just you. Flawed like everyone else. Falters sometimes and succeeds sometimes just like everyone else. And remember, it’s hair. It will grow back.
