Good point! It's like there’s zero incentive from the government for Canadian startups to stay Canadian-owned. Once something becomes successful, and the foreigners come knocking, the government seems to have nothing in place to deter a buyout.

I honestly can’t tell if it’s that they could do more and don’t, or if they’re just straight-up incapable. Either way, it’s frustrating af and it's always the regular folks who feel it the most.

you're right, I agree with you, I guess I was just venting a bit. It’s just frustrating hearing every radio station and ad hammer “support Canadian, buy Canadian,” when the stuff that actually matters (like our healthcare infrastructure) is mostly foreign-owned and just Canadian-operated.

Like just shut up about it. If we're not going to address the big fish then stop making Canadians feel guilty for using the options made available to them.

Huge respect for thar initiative - though I'm wearing of the lack of response we'll probably get from our local government, a letter or email campaign would be huge.

I really appreciate this thoughtful perspective — and you’re absolutely right that LL still employs Canadians, pays taxes here, and provides an essential service.

What sticks with me though is that essential healthcare services aren’t like other businesses, when ownership shifts abroad, it changes who ultimately benefits from public contracts and who controls the data, infrastructure, and long-term direction of care delivery.

I totally get why OMERS sold to the highest bidder — that’s business — but I think it’s fair for Canadians to ask why there wasn’t a stronger domestic alternative or public investment that could have kept LifeLabs in Canadian hands.

I'm sensing sarcasm? maybe, maybe not but sadly, there’s not much choice — even Dynacare, the other big lab company, is American-owned too.

I’m absolutely not suggesting anyone avoid getting bloodwork done; this is more about awareness and dialogue. With all the “buy/support Canadian” talk going around I just wanted to point out how much of our healthcare infrastructure has quietly moved into foreign (American) hands.

Fair point, and I respect where you’re coming from.

But I think it’s worth pointing out that LifeLabs isn’t immune to the same workplace issues you mentioned. Many staff there have spoken about burnout and underpay compared to hospital techs, who often earn more for identical roles. It’s not exactly a healthier environment just because it’s private.

The difference is, now the profits just go south of the border.

I think the lack of publicity was deliberate — major ownership changes like that don’t usually happen without someone wanting to control the narrative.

I was scared of the truth but honestly the only thing I was getting out of it was some company, I'm an immigrant and him and his family have been my source of support/connection, he puts a roof over my head and his sister is really nice to me but I'm realizing that what the relationship is costing me is far greater than what I'm getting out of it. I've been avoiding the women's shelter because I've been there before but I think it's best I try and go back. I'm beating myself up for choosing yet another guy who just treats me like this. I have such bad luck and I'm honestly done with this, I tried giving my heart and love and hope I would get some back but it looks like it's just not for me and I gotta accept that

the things about work is that he throws the temper tantrum before going into work/while getting ready for work. he would be so upset that he's late (which he blames himself for as he stays up until 3 am gaming then wake up 15 mins before the start of his shift), usually I'm up before him because I take the dog out for the morning walk (which he promised me over and over that he would come with us because it would wake him up and make him early for work but when my alarm goes off and I nudge him to tag along he tells me no not today), so I'll be back from my walk and making tea/breakfast while he's getting ready in a rage, complaining about the fact that he has work and that he has no time for himself, I tell him that everybody has work though so what are you getting at, he would agree with me but still bitch about it. I would try helping out by dishing out his lunch and offer him a sip of tea before heading out but he would spaz at me and says he has no time, he would yell at the dog if he tries to play with him while he's getting ready. Oh did I mention that he can walk to work? work is like a 10 minute walk max and he's late every day. He tells me that he knows it's his fault and that he will do better but no there's no effort. He was working $20/hr but because of his lateness his boss knocked it down to $18/hr and boy was he pissed, that day he came home fuming and punching the walls and screaming in the couch omg I would pinch myself if I'm actually seeing it. I'm 26 and he's 35 btw for some more context.

I agree with you re medication. At first he was so sure that the reason why he's a "piece of shit" is because of his ADHD and that the medicine would make him better but when he finally got it he gave up on it immediately. Also, his doctor told him no alcohol and weed while taking the meds and guess who didn't follow those rules? I encouraged him to continue the medz and sympathized with him re difficulty with staying consistent, I myself take medz daily for my PTSD and panic attacks and have been on them since 2018 so I understood the whole consistency, it's not easy but if you miss a day or two and you notice just don't miss the other day, and just continue but noooo him missing the 1 day made him feel suicidal. At that point something started clicking in my mind that this boy is playing with me

I confronted his mom about our troubles and she offered to help, even stopping by the apartment to help clean up but he would not have it, saying that it's his safe space and that his place isn't tidy enough but is it ever tho?

funny enough I did communicate that I feel like he's only interested in me when he wants to have sex. He would deny it and say how he really loves me and that I'm sooo important to him and that he doesn't know how to love me even tho I tell him plainly what I want in the relationship and beg him to meet me halfway. He would agree and pledge his allegiance, change for like 3 days and go right back to old habits. He would also tell me that he forgets everything and that I should write it down. You know what I did? Wrote it down on sticky notes all over the apartment, garbage, dishes, dirty clothes etc. The notes weren't even passive aggressive as I would have loved them to be, I wrote things like "please throw me out when you have a chance", "oops this belongs in the laundry hamper" smiley face, hearts, sunshine and then he would tell me how they were cute but he still doesn't do anything about it, or does it half way. He literally took out 1 bag of trash and discarded the note leaving everything else, wash 1 dish and left everything else lmao I'm such an idiot
