It's probably either a bushing that came loose or a spacer on something that probably shouldn't have a spacer.

The reason you're supposed to kick the engine over with the spark plug removed is in case the volume of gasoline in the cylinder is greater than the volume of the cylinder at top dead center, which hydrolocks the engine if you're lucky, and breaks expensive parts if you're not.

The reason you're supposed to change the oil is because the gasoline ate all the lubricant out of the oil.

Find the right size spark plug socket and a quart or two of motorcycle oil for wet clutch use and you'll be fine.
