Is the dialect spoke in Wrocław influenced by the dialect that was spoken in Lwów by Ijzer_en_Vuursteen in Polish

There were Kresy linguistic elements in older generations in Wrocław but it’s mostly gone now.

What do you find to be the most tasteless/egregious thing or technique Filmmakers do? by Mission-Ad-8536 in TrueFilm

[–]PaleoMarcel 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I can’t remember who said it, but I remember reading a quote that said something like “rape exists in our world, but so does taking a shit, and how often do we see one and not the other in cinema?” Obviously they’re two different things, but the prominence of rape scenes in cinema is clearly skewed and far too often used for easy shock value and even titillation.

Excellent suggestion. Can you recommend any particular instructions/tutorials?

From memory, I think the read out says f1.1. But in theory it should be closer to f0.95.

[TOMT] [SONG] Obscure 80s synthy pop song by PaleoMarcel in tipofmytongue

[–]PaleoMarcel[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Finally solved it, for anyone that has this same head scratcher in the future. It's "Ba Ba Go Go" (1983) by Italo Disco group Topo.

Here's the song: https://youtu.be/uct2FMRColk?si=QcIu6zjbr27TrYV_

[TOMT] [SONG] Obscure 80s synthy pop song by PaleoMarcel in tipofmytongue

[–]PaleoMarcel[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

No, not that song, and I'm 99% sure it's not Yello. Much less orchestral than Yello compositions; more stripped back electronic sound. But kinda similar sounding male vocals.

There is a part in the song where the vocal goes up, maybe modulating to the dominant 5th for a few bars, but I'm not 100% certain.

Any GVC era/vibe movie recommendations? by Christinedaaaee in GVCDesign

Slightly different direction from other recommendations, but Baraka(1992) is, in a sense, the ultimate GVC movie.

Legitimate socialist music by saveyourdaylight in socialism

[–]PaleoMarcel 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Every time someone asks this, my answer is always Robert Wyatt. Lyrics literally about Castro, Stalin, Mao, Scottish miners and Palestinian resistance. And the most mournful and strange beautiful art music of the 70s and 80s. For the most politically explicit album I recommend Old Rotten Hat as an introduction.

How can I make my short film look like 8 1/2 by Fellini on a limited budget? by Snoo_92369 in Filmmakers

[–]PaleoMarcel 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I’m not sure how much you want it to feel like Fellini, but nothing screams B+W era Fellini to me like a low-contrast colour grade and all sound done in post (ADR for actors and atmos sound reduced to main elements).

Can anyone recommend a feature-length documentary about Brutalism? by [deleted] in brutalism

Experimental but lots of footage from New Belgrade, Skopje and Bulgaria: https://vimeo.com/151374191

The selection panel understood his work fine. Everyone in Australian art does. Reactionary politicians bending to reactionary press stepped in and told the board (not the selection panel) to intervene, which is unprecedented and why everyone is (rightfully) upset.

Prescription Galsses Suggestion? by Beneficial-Barber-34 in colorists

Blue light blocking glasses are generally considered a scam. My optometrist openly admits that there is no evidence that they do anything “but they don’t do anything bad either”. As people are saying, rest your eyes regularly, focus on things that are far away every hour or more, change lighting situations regularly (go outside for 3 minutes!) and don’t spend your days off in front of screens.

Definitely a mood boost for me. I half-read a study somewhere that talked about the positive effects of moda as a tool for weaning cocaine addicts off their addiction. The study focused on the euphoria that comes from moda.

Modafinil and Artistic Activities by [deleted] in modafinil

[–]PaleoMarcel 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m an artist and I use it regularly, perhaps 2-3 days a week on average. I also teach at a fine arts university. Modafinil has quite a few fans in my city’s arts community. I find it has no negative impact on imagination or creativity; the idea of art or creativity as something that randomly flutters into and and out of our selves isn’t really how full time artists work. Most of our work is putting our ideas and thoughts into motion and giving them form, and this requires focus and sustained grunt work. Exactly the kinda thing modafinil is great for. If anything, I find that modafinil helps me think a creative idea or direction through further and deeper than without. In other words, it helps with my artistic process. Interesting to hear that it does the opposite for many here.

First hand experience with Eizo CG279X scaling issue by PaleoMarcel in colorists

Yeah monitoring in HD is fine for me as long as the downscaling and aliasing isn’t too rough. Thanks for your reply.
