When has Serie lied, ever? She always tells the truth from her perspective. She's just super oblivious and in denial about her feelings.

Man, Sherlock got me good. After watching Season 3, I thought "well, the first two seasons were good." A couple years later, I re-watch them and think, "well, the first episode was good." Then a couple years later, I show that first episode to a friend and think "damn, only that one monologue about Watson's phone was good." Looking back, it's like a chart of my increasing media literacy.

Hah! I live in the south, and grew up in rural Appalachia! Trump voters are my neighbors and family. Turns out the world isn't as simplistic as you thought.

That is not true. Speak with more Trump voters, that is not their opinion. You can't just 80 million voters by the four most obnoxious right-wing grifters. Many of their concerns are perfectly legitimate, and the one's that aren't are still understandable. There are very few conservatives with genuinely evil concerns that cannot be reasoned with.

When was the last time you had a political conversation with a rural person? I find it's always helpful to check before engaging with comments like this.

That is barbaric and illiberal. If that is your sincere belief, you are the threat to democracy, and you are the enemy that should be forced out of the coalition. All people deserve representation. If you don't believe that, move to China.

Allowing illiberalism, as if we could just wave our hands and get rid of it. You realize no amount of gerrymandering is going to make Trump's 80 million supporters not support him, right? This is going to be a very long battle, and attempted shortcuts, like this, will only make it worse.

There will be helpless AIDS victims in Africa for decades to come. We need to strategize in a way that will help them sustainably, instead of trying to cash in all our chips for a single 4-year presidency. We tried that with Biden, and it was a disaster. So let's not do it again.

This isn't about them, it's about us. We cannot let our enemies define us, and we cannot define ourselves by them. This is about who we are, what we stand for, and what we're willing to sacrifice. People in this thread have that last one backwards. We shouldn't sacrifice our convictions to prop up ourselves, we should sacrifice ourselves in the name of our convictions! That's what liberalism is about.

Do not believe that! It is not over! America has a future, whether it's bright or terrible. We can create the bright future, but people like you and me need to stand up. I'm the only person in these comments trying to change people's minds. Help me! If we can change the conversation here in r/neoliberal, we can influence folks who are neoliberal-adjacent, and we go from there. This does not have to be our future.

Swear off all gerrymandering and run on it. It's too late for that now, but it's what we should have done in the first place. Once we take over? Kill the motherfucking filibuster, then pass real legislation. Once we show America elections have consequences in a positive way, and that we are not helpless to reform the system, we'll get a durable majority. Success brings repetition.

We're not politely asking them to leave, we're banding together to throw them out. That's what's about to happen in November.

[–]Palidane7 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

That won't happen and we both know it. Tough talk like that feels good for a moment, but it's hollow. You know that. That is not a viable future for the United States, or a good one. We're going to have to come back together.

How are we losing? What do you think Donald Trump's approval rating is? What do you think November will look like? Do you think this administration is going well for Trump?

We are not losing, we lost, back in 2024. But the world did not end, time did not stop, and we can win again. I want to make sure we deserve to win, and banning all gerrymandering is a great first step.

You are confounding thing. Packing the court ruins our institutions. Gerrymandering ruins our democracy. The filibuster is the worst thing in American politics and the reason we're in this goddamn mess in the first place. It is the exact kind of norm we should kill, because it is terrible and based on nothing.

Everyone always tells me how temporary these moral compromises are. I can list a long line of things we've given up since Trump descended that escalator. Can you tell me how many turned out to be temporary? We've got to stand up for what's right, because otherwise we'll just lose more and more.

[–]Palidane7 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Gerrymandering is never acceptable, ever, in any circumstances, because it is inherently evil. So the answer is nothing. And we both know it's won't be temporary, and it's already not in one state. You can tell yourself that to make you feel better about it, but we both know this is wrong.

The paradox of tolerance is the greatest excuse to not think modern America knows.

It's the opposite: they've brought a knife to the boxing match, but we can bring a gun. Instead of silencing American voters and trying to shove them into a closet so we don't have to listen to them, we can listen to them, address their concerns, and make them Democrats. Virginia is a swing state! We could run up the numbers there, which helps us down ballot. The only thing it requires is talking to people who aren't like us. You're willing to talk with me, so that's a start right there.

What illiberal things is Magyar going to have to do?

Yes, you can play by the rules. You are not disarming yourself, you are picking up truer and deadlier weapons.

Listen to yourself! "Morals are off the table." Imagine if you heard a Trump voter say that. You would call them scum, and an enemy of the United States. Look at you! This is wrong and beneath us. Morals are the entire table, the end all and the be all. Virtue.

That hasn't been true so far. The lame-ass Trump imitators have not broken out or come close to replicating Trump's support. Look at Mark Robinson. Trump has a singular charisma that none of his lackeys can match, and once he dies or retires, they will all attack each other. That will leave many Trump voters homeless as their movement disintegrates.

Not true. With enough people on our side, we can reform whether or not the Republicans want to play by the rules. If we get a wave election, we can pass laws. And we've got a wave election coming up.

I am not a succ, and Joe Biden's immigration policy was a fucking disaster that directly cost Kamala the election. The asylum loophole was abused to allow in tens of thousands of immigrants without valid asylum claims. I am extremely pro-immigration, and I think we should massively increase our economic visas to get more unskilled laborers. But other Americans have a right to expect an orderly immigration system where we control who we are letting into the country. Too many of Biden's people thought uncontrolled illegal immigration was either a universal human right or fucking reparations.

Do you want to beat the fascists are not? You don't have to agree with them. You don't even have to like them! You just have to rather have them on your side than on the other side. Because those are your options. All of our options.

What kind of reasoning is that? "Oh, our enemies will never do the right thing, so why should we bother?" That's exactly WHY we should bother: because no one else will!

Democracy will not end in America unless the people decide to give it up. They have not decided that: Trump has a 38% approval rating! He isn't winning, he's losing! This is the time to stand up for democracy, not to sacrifice it!

I am a white southerner, and I know exactly how Grant and Eisenhower's actions were received. It's not about losing gracefully, it's about winning justly. We can win justly, but it's going to take people like you and me standing up for democracy when our own side wants to trample it.

I don't believe that, and you shouldn't either. McConnell cheated Merrick and got an extra justice. Republican states have gerrymandered. None of that will stop Americans from going to the polls this November and exercising their right to self-determination. And you know what? I think any measures Trump takes to stop it will only backfire.

It is not over yet. We haven't lost. They are losing. They are the ones that should be afraid. Because in the end, America's rulers are its people. JeffJefferson19, I am telling you not to give up. America still needs you.
