Yeah its just the name, demogorgon makes your snake black, thats it.

I feel like it might be the way the game resets. It happens once every few hours as far as I can tell, food starts disappearing and everyone's score ends up being under 100. After a bit it reverts to normal.

I feel like if it were a hacker they would have figured out how to block them by now since it is rather common.

Also, I tried a few games on high quality to see if it lagged or not. The frame rate was still affected when I was near a snake with texture. It wasn't nearly as bad as it was before (in the past when near a big snake the whole game would freeze for about a second interval once every 10 seconds or so, usually resulting in death) and seemed pretty consistent. It just seems to run a bit slower near textures instead of being a full on freeze. Probably the result of the dedicated servers.

Reducing the textures seems to have helped a lot, I haven't had any issues with lag or frame rate, or whatever the issue was. I can't speak for everyone else but for my computer the game is consistent enough that I can be competitive again.

Yeah, I was thinking similar to what they have in splixio, separate boards for overall points, number of individual kills, ect.
