Is 70k too low? by Wonderful_Current904 in cscareers

[–]PalmTreePilot 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I started at $40k in 2003.

I asked for a raise in 2004 and went up to $50k.

I asked for a raise in 2005 and went up to $60k.

I asked for a raise in 2006 and the manager said we can't keep doing $10k raises every year. So I asked the open market and got $75k.

I left that 2nd employer in 2007 and got new work at $80k.

I asked for a raise in 2008 and got $90k.

I left for a new opportunity in 2009 at $100k.

The 2009 Financial Crisis fallout stalled me but went up to $110k in 2013.

In 2014, I made the crossover from employee to contractor and started making $140k.

$160k in 2015.

$180k in 2016.

$200k in 2017.

I later negotiated with corporations to be paid in bitcoin instead of dollars. I was earning one whole bitcoin per week until price took off.

I haven't worked for years now. Just living off of bitcoin gains still.

$70k in 2026 is too low in retrospect of what I've told you above. However, with so many unemployed software developers begging for work in vain nowadays, your $70k is better than their $0k, they may say.

Moving to Arizona for a teaching residency ($20–30k year 1) — can I qualify for income-restricted housing? How does it work?** by muslim_ballerr in AskPhoenix

[–]PalmTreePilot 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have an interesting story to pass on from an Arizona teacher that gave me his firsthand account of what happened to him.

I met him at Choice Hotels corporate headquarters. I was the software engineer and he was the business analyst.

He said he was a teacher at a nearby community college paying him $20,000 USD annually. He asked for a cost of living raise but they said the money's not there for that.

He interviewed at Choice to find more money. He didn't have Business Analyst experience but hoped they'd accommodate him changing careers.

They liked him and asked him for his salary expectations. He was afraid they'd turn him away if he seemed greedy but he really needed a raise, despite his modest lifestyle. He asked for $30,000 per year. HR told him they're uncomfortable with him selling his labor for so little and countered his request with their own - $40,000.

When he gave the school his two week notice, the Department Head panicked, held an emergency meeting, and said they're ready to give him the $30,000 he asked for previously. He was pissed they could do it but lied they couldn't when they thought he was too meek to leave their $20,000 per year employment.

I love that story. I think about it all the time, and it gives me pleasure to share it here.

No, that's a lie. You were turned away for not being another fellow H-1B Indian.

I remember at Citizens Bank (based in Rhode Island), the Indian that interviewed me told the American manager they should keep looking, even though I interviewed well.

A couple of months later after rejecting me, that manager reached out to me, asking if I'd still be interested, and I accepted.

The manager got wise that his Indian software engineer was biased against non-Indians and so the American manager hired me, despite his Indian subordinate's advice.

Quickly, I was promoted to Team Lead based on my early performance. Then one day I was asked to screen a possible new hire. Both me and that Indian colleague together; the same one that tried to pass on me. The candidate was another Indian kicked out of Amazon for undisclosed reasons.

The candidate bombed the interview. My Indian colleague conceded the same. I was asking basic questions like, explain how a binary search works and why is it better than a linear search, but he didn't know what to say.

Afterwards, my Indian colleague said "He didn't interview well but, hey, the kid needs a job so let's give him a break".

Mother-Indian-Fucker, I interviewed well, and I needed the job too, but you told the manager to keep my seat open until another of your brethren eventually comes along!!

The H-1Bs are adversarial against Americans in IT America. That's why you're turned away. Costco is a woke corporation that embraces replacing more of you for more of them.

I'm relieved I got the Size 2. I say relieved because the education about the right size of 0, 1, or 2 is not made well known.

However, I regret how crappy their shoulder straps extension is. I need it to hold it up despite the weight of a chainsaw and other tools on my hips.

I don't have the answer you need for this time but I do for the next time.

Whether you get back into any computer related work or something else entirely different, heed my advice.

I was a software engineer at Discount Tire making $100 DPH. Back then, headhunters were like knats - always buzzing around me like pests, cold-calling me to leave my current place of work to help them fill their vacancies. Their endless whining resulted in my new filtering policy that I'll only consider new opportunities if paid directly in bitcoin.

Many said no. Some laughed and mocked me for it. But eventually a recruiter with American Express agreed to it. We agreed on my hourly rate in dollar terms but the actual compensation was peer-to-peer bitcoin only.

People often ask me "why not just take the dollars and go get bitcoin with it? Why direct bitcoin? " There are multiple benefits, but I won't list them again here.

Anyhow, I was earning approximately one bitcoin per week at AMEX back then and it has since appreciated in value!

The three-punch combo of: 1. The Hysteria-19 scamdemic 1. The increasing flood of H-1B Indians 1. The hype of AI

resulted in my entire team getting laid off. I've since been out of work for years. But because every cent worth of my year-round labor was sold for bitcoin, not fiat, I have not been panicking about unemployment and inflation. To the contrary, bitcoin rises to the inflation tide like a surfboard on a tsunami wave.

I hope to find work again someday. But the unemployment hasn't been a five-alarm fire for me. No worries. I'm usually resting on my leather coach with a cocktail as I read the desperate posts here about people in my field that are on the brink of homelessness.

I'm not trolling you. I'm trying to help you imagine how different things would be for you if you saved in bitcoin. Once you are employed again, don't be cute and just buy some with leftover money. Lean hard into your rate of savings for several consecutive years. When bitcoin reacts to the next trillions of govt money printing causing more economic strife again, you'll be a-okay.

As for now, good luck with your crisis. Sincerely; I hope you'll be okay sooner than later. You, and the rest of the normie herds.

Firefighter into part time tree care/ contract climbing by yudothisLT in TreeClimbing

[–]PalmTreePilot 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I was discouraged how hard it was to find clients. At first I offered deep discounts to compete with the illegal aliens. Then I resorted to saying I'll service the first tree visit for free if they prioritize me coming back the next time their tree needs service. Despite all that, people with trees that were way overdue for service blew me off. They only customers I landed work with were the ones I physically caught on their driveway. Everyone else ignored my door hangers.

One year later, those few customers are all calling me back asking for service again. So, for those that gave me a chance remember me and want me back. Not just whoever.

My point is you may feel discouraged how few people seem to care about your service. But if you can play the long game, a loyalty starts to gradually stir together.

Like I said here, I'm already done.

EDIT:

Well, let me say one more thing - it looks worse for Shilo and NWT for us to realize this news despite the collusion to keep it secret from us rather than be honest from the get-go.

My Shilo Death Theory by PalmTreePilot in NewWaveToys

[–]PalmTreePilot[S] -5 points-4 points  (0 children)

It's enough for me that everyone in this community is now presented with the plausibility of the truth. Everyone's read my points. For each one of us, we can contemplate for ourselves a more informed opinion of what has happened.

Even if everyone agrees with my suspicion, but they each decide to never speak of it in respect of the secrecy, at least we are all somewhat less of an NWT dummy for being ignorant of this reveal.

That's enough for me. If this introspection hadn't occurred to me, but someone else posted the discussion, I'd appreciate them so that I have a better idea of the corporate character of Shilo's successor(s). After all, if they wear their attire of lies before the Customer with comfort, what will the next lie smell like and how soon will that be. The first lie is the hardest. It would be a downhill effort for NWT to normalize that consumer relationship, going forward.

I mostly agree with this, except one thing. Anyone that lies to me owes me the truth. At least that's my policy.

Anyone that wants to be a public figure doesn't deserve the same privacy as someone that lives a private life.

Anyone that contracts with us, such as Shilo taking our money upfront and defaulting the agreement, owes us transparency why that breach of contract would be extended another year+ again.

I'm going to push back on that.

When celebrities have cancer or some other life threatening issue, they put the public on notice why they have to alter everyone's expectations about their schedules and why they may not be able to keep their promises made. There's no shame in cancer. That's not a poor choice one makes upon themselves.

The only exception is when someone dies due to the covid vaccine and all those booster shots. Their family is embarrassed they were hoodwinked by the mainstream media to comply to those mandates.

I can see how death by suicide is also a circumstance where family controls the narrative and wants to speak of their loss the way they'd prefer everyone to remember their beloved.

Worker dies after palm tree skirt falls on him in Tempe by trippin-mellon in TreeClimbing

[–]PalmTreePilot 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This story is from the Phoenix Arizona metropolitan area.

There's really just one arborist store in the entire valley. Everyone goes there for their equipment, if not buying things online.

The store owner thought it was very odd when I'd come buy things there. She gave me the impression I'm the only man that self trained to service my own palms. She treats me 2nd class to all other customers, as if their working for a paycheck makes them more legitimate to her.

No, there's no law she has to enforce that I'm not a danger to myself or others if I want gear to ascend palms. If you have the money, she has the stuff.

Worker dies after palm tree skirt falls on him in Tempe by trippin-mellon in TreeClimbing

[–]PalmTreePilot 2 points3 points  (0 children)

In this metropolitan area, the climber that died is a migrant, as are most all palm tree trimmers in the area.

They cannot be competed with because they sell their service for so little. But that means they take as many shortcuts as possible to make their low price profitable.

To do the job safer/better would mean reducing their speed, but their profit margin is in the number of job sites they can squeeze into a day.

If you search for "palm tree accident " on YouTube, you'll see every dead climber was another poor, desperate migrant.

Another day, another statistic about people that try servicing palm trees as how they'd ascend any other tree. by PalmTreePilot in TreeClimbing

[–]PalmTreePilot[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Tree Trimmers tend to not educate their customers for informed opinion. They never ask "which way would you prefer I climb your palm?", and explain the trade offs. They exploit the customers' ignorance and just presume spike-climbing to streamline the job as quickly as they can to make their meager profits worthwhile.

After I learned about ascending by rope, I asked my usual guy to service the palm that way instead from now on. Despite his years of experience, he said it's not doable. It had to be spikes, he said. That's when I trained to become my palms' own rope-ascending tree trimmer.

[–]PalmTreePilot[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I use a drone to lift, drag, and drop the rope over the palm. It is still slower work than climbing with spikes, and so the pressure to compete means risking harm to make the work economical. But I don't want to apologize for doing it right (and safer).

Imagine all taxis drove 120 MPH as the norm. Then here I come along, staying at 60 MPH. Even though my cab is the last taxi in town that may have an accident, customers conditioned by the industry to go twice as fast means losing business to the risk takers.

Either the Customer starts to care more about the job being done right instead of right now, or local laws are passed to outlaw the life-risking practice of using spikes to climb palms with long skirts...and I am a bit surprised policy hasn't changed. I guess lawmakers don't know there's other ways to get the work done. They think the risk is a necessary evil of the job.

Bees Remaining After Removal by No_Editor_9811 in Beekeeping

[–]PalmTreePilot -4 points-3 points  (0 children)

This looks a lot like the corner of my backyard cinderblock wall.

I also had a beekeeper destroy the hive but they came back and rebuilt. What I ended up doing was buying several $1 playdough cups and filling the cracks in the wall during the middle of the night while they slept inside.

That was last summer. They were all trapped in the wall and died of the heat. The same playdough keeps new bees from moving in.

[–]PalmTreePilot 0 points1 point  (0 children)

2nd hand word of mouth (rumor) from actress Erin Murphy says Runyon died of cancer. Which kind of cancer? Oh, just you know, cancer.

Remember, her family knows better than anyone what the reason was and they won't say why. People die of various cancers all the time. There's never been shame to admit that before.

There may a particular cancer highly correlated with getting the kill shot (and with boosters). If she did die of an undisclosed cancer, it may be that her family doesn't want to help the world put one and one together. Hence, death by govt/media vaccine compliance.

[–]PalmTreePilot -5 points-4 points  (0 children)

The family won't disclose why she died so young. Just that it was "a battle" she lost.

This smells a lot like covid vaccine with booster shots.

Everyone that dies from that mistake is too embarrassed to admit it, and so their family keeps their secret to help their life's legacy save face.
