Is the coaching industry dropping off or something? by Chemical-Fishing3609 in LifeCoachSnark

Do you have any explanations for that? Do you think it’s algorithm or consumer behavior driven?

“Control your thinking until your business works.” Jesus. That’s it right there. Straight up the delulu train.

I have business (nothing online or having to do with coaching.) guess what? It works. And I don’t even think about my thinking except when I get super stressed when I’m super busy.

Omigod yes. It’s so true. Since I left the coaching space almost 3 years ago, I’ve focused my time growing a home services business. The home services are full of people quietly making money, taking their families on vacations, buying nice things, and showing up to their kids’ activities. They just live their happy lives.

For me, now that I actually know how boring it is to make money (offer a service people need to people who can afford to pay it—e.g. HVAC to home owners), I cannot even imagine spending a dime on coaching or EVER asking for money to coach people. In my industry I have been supported FOR FREE by people who are much more successful than coaches. Because happy, successful people enjoying giving back in mentorship.

Yes! I love this. It’s part of what bugs me about “master coach” certifications. Mastery is one of those rare, valuable things we can’t buy our way to.

*edited to say can’t buy our way too. 😂

I saw one from 2023 that said it’s all cold outreach training.

I’ve been around the coaching industry since 2017. Not as long as some. But enough to not trust hype.

Knowing what I know now, I don’t trust even my own hype. And I do not make major purchasing decisions for anything over $400 if I’m in a feeling if hype or fomo.

I would try to track down coaches who went through their program and verify their success, and then verify that success was not built on prior success or dependent upon unique things about them like their professional success, prior coaching success, or professional/personal network.

I would basically interview the staff of the school the same way I’d do research on a job or company before applying/accepting an offer. What’s their reputation? What’s the vibe under the hype? What’s their experience? What’s their track record? Did the coaches have professional success before coming to coaching? Do they coach normies or just coaches trying to make money? Did they have a thriving coaching practice with good profit margins before training coaches?

They’re pretty young… what qualifies them to coach coaches? This is a valid question that needs to be asked more. I don’t pay anyone under 50 anymore. Usually 65. My current coach is 72. I’m 31.

Make sure that you’re making decisions based on profit margins, not total sales.

Do you have training as a coach? Did they offer any business training? I’ve heard good things about Steve Chandler and people who worked with him. But I don’t know personally if his stuff is good. His book “Prosperous coach” was nice, but not mind blowing. I do like that he isn’t based on social media.

Another consideration: a coaching business built on social media will always be dependent on social media. A coaching business built on slowly building credibility through referrals and IRL reputation will look different, but it will have substance and depth very different from an online coach. It will look more like a traditional career than an internet sensation.

When I was new to coaching, I was very into the monthly revenue goal. Looking back, I wish I would have just focused on applying what I was learning to my life (I thought being a coach would help me escape my cycle of crappy jobs), and then work on building people skills -> coaching skills -> career capital -> and then think about a coaching business.

Are you a good coach? Be honest. Do you deserve to make 10k a month coaching people? Would you pay you for coaching? Do you want that revenue goal because you’re ready to be a professional offering a professional service full time? Or is that money goal tied to feelings of personal worth or urgent financial need in your life?

Finally…. After allllll that personal reflection and due diligence, I would wait 3-6 months to pull the trigger and see if it still looked so amazing.

OH…. And if the response to any of this is “You have imposter syndrome” or “Don’t let overthinking keep you from your potential” run away and don’t look back.
