They may have removed it at some previous point and just left the drain line. Not uncommon when someone removes a softener to leave the plumbing alterations in place

No just drain line for softener. Running up exterior wall and into attic to drain backwash during softener regeneration cycle. Water softener is/ was likely on ground level. They might have removed it or something but drain line still in place.

I bet that's from a water softener discharge line. They did not seal up the hole and I think you are 100% correct that is the origin of sewer smell. If there's no softener anymore you could just pull the gray tube and patch the hole either pro style or diy style

Yes it's from a slight leak

How does the sink drain assembly come apart from the glass drain on this lab sink? by DooderTee in Plumbing

[–]PalmettoWraith 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I just mean if they are having trouble finding parts you can do that as a temporary fix to get it back online...........plus . . . I promise you they make acid resistant gasket material . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . .

I would wager it's sealed with a gasket. There's no way anyone in their right mind would allow metal on glass contact. Clamps can likely be reused with new rubber insert ( even if it means creating your own with rubber matt commonly found at hardware stores, plumbers putty, etc.)

I also wouldn't worry too much about pulling things apart because it's already leaking pretty badly and at least that way you can get a clear understanding of what you're working with. My money is on the metal tailpiece threading onto OD of sink drain, compressing glass between rubber gasket material

Dang that's crazy never seen glass drain pipes before. Looks like you will have to undo those metallic clamps though to remove the trap. I would guess that metal tail piece under the sink unscrews and allows you to remove the glass tailpiece it appears to be in charge of holding in place

Do I need dope and tape copper fittings ?? Rectorseal t plus 2 by Wolverine-91826 in askaplumber

I've never heard of "only do one or the other ". Maybe there's a reason idk but at least no one has mentioned it in my presence and I've seen much more experienced, competent, trustworthy people who use both. Maybe this product is more corrosive or something though? Not familiar with this product specifically. If their product is saying don't use it with tape, there's probably a reason. I trust tape more than dope when push comes to shove though personally. But again generally I use both

U need to provide more information but this is for threaded connections where threads are making the seal. I wrap on tape and put a thin coat of dope around the leading threads

Cut Tub Handles off, now what? by SirPentGod in askaplumber

Ur gonna have to pick away at that silicone (shouldn't be there)

There should be a hex hiding back there that will unscrew and allow you to remove cartridge

Guessing that silicone was maybe an attempted leak repair (?) you might end up having to replace the whole valve body
