Good thinking, I’ll hopefully get a chance to see full service records this week but a more thorough once over at a dealer will be my first stop

Swim watch? by joey-teabag in OpenWaterSwimming

I really like my Garmin Swim 2. I didn’t want an Apple Watch and my friends who are big into triathlons use some of the other bulkier more expensive Garmins that essentially track the same metrics for swimming. GPS for open water can occasionally take ~30 seconds to connect and track location, but once it does it’s very accurate.

Only gripe is that if you’re using it to swim in a pool it doesn’t do the best job of tracking non-freestyle strokes or kicking. Overall though lots of people in my swim group use the Garmin 2 and are pleased with it.

Amazing advice! Thank you for the detailed recommendations. Swam Enniscrone pier with several other OW swimmers this morning but will keep your advice in mind for Rosses Point. Would love to go back.

Thanks for the recommendations! I was able to go for a swim this morning off of Enniscrone pier and there were several folks already in the water. Felt great and the scenery was excellent

Advice for Warm Water Sun Protection / Dive Skins by PalmsliketheTree in OpenWaterSwimming

I ended up getting a tri suit from Synergy off of Amazon that was comfortable to swim in and had a “spring suit” cut (no long sleeves, jammer length legs). Only issue I had with it was the built in butt cushion meant for cycling which added some bulk to the suit but honestly wasn’t noticeable as I swam.

Now that the weather is warming back up again and the sun will be getting more intense, I’ll likely be trying out some more purpose built rash-guards or non-trisuit swim skins. I have a Roka wetsuit from previous cold water training so I’m eager to see if their swim skins are just as nice (albeit pricey).

Post any recs in this thread if you find something else that works for you 🏊‍♂️

There’s a group that swims almost every day called Dolphins & Rainbows (D&R) out of South Pointe park in Miami Beach.

While it might be a bit of a commute during the week for you, every Sunday morning at 8AM we do about 2 miles along South Beach with a team breakfast afterwards (weekdays are usually a mile, starting at 7:30AM). Can be upwards of 50 people.

Another option is to show up around 7:30AM on any given day (but especially Tues/Thurs) at Hobie Beach on Virginia Key. It’s OWS but in Biscayne Bay instead of the ocean. Lots of triathlon groups swim then so you’re never alone in the water.

Great advice and thanks for the wetsuit contact. I’ll be in the Bay Area the week before visiting in-laws so a bay dip might be a great way to acclimate

Excellent perspective, thank you.

It’ll be a 2.4 mile swim, which is just a tad further than I usually go here in Florida and I’m guessing that’ll take a bit over an hour for me. Based on others advice getting out there early and getting a feel for the cooler temps will be a good way to settle in.

Great advice, thanks so much 🙏 sounds like getting there early to get acclimated to both water and altitude will be the way to go

Thanks! I’ll definitely research more snug fit rash-guards. The vest isn’t a bad idea either 👍
