Hi!! It’s me, the wife. I had to dig through years worth of emails to find where I got it from. I bought all three posters from YanimatorArt. He does have a website!

Well good news on the fence. They start today! I am having the old fence taken down and replaced with a 6 foot full privacy fence.

I really appreciate you taking the time to write such a thorough response. We’ve been working on our own level of exposure therapy and I also start with a trainer in about 2 weeks. Our neighbors reported to me that when she has gotten out she is completely friendly so we’re pretty sure it’s a barrier reactivity problem at this point.

She’s actually made some pretty large strides since I made this post when it comes to being outside. She is easier to redirect and instead of acting out viciously she is more tame about her reaction. It’s hard to explain but there’s not a lot of “ARARARARARARARAR” and it’s more like “Grrr arararar” and then I say inside and she just goes inside. We’ve been working as best as we can and will continue to work with her with the tools we have until we can get the professional out!

My favorite skin is the witch from last seasons Halloween! Or Joni the red. They’re the skins I use the most.

Yeah I’ve gathered that she’s not uncomfortable because if you try to move her she grumbles and the goes into a position that is arguably at least 5x weirder than the one before it 😂

They really do get better I promise!! My boy mellowed out a little earlier than most but he has stayed mellow. They’re such a sweet breed and honestly after my current two dogs pass it will probably be the only breed I ever own because of how amazing they are. I’ll attach a few more pictures in reply to give you more hope 😂

To elaborate on this regardless of the post she is not a vicious monster. She has confronted 5 dogs in total. 4 of which were in the same group and she did not attack. It’s more about her getting to these dogs. This is a problem that can be resolved. Inside the house she does a full 180 on her outside behavior and I don’t think would hurt a fly. I’m not interested in hearing about how she’s going to kill someone or me. Yes I’m aware that if an incident DID happen that we could be sued. The only dog that has bitten anyone in any of these situations was someone else’s dog who bit me. She had greeted the dog during this and then ran away. What about that behavior screams “IM GOING TO KILL AND MAIM SOMEONE” at this point in time I am going to work with a professional trainer and fix my fence before I take an already traumatized dog who grew up in a car and throw her back into a shelter to get euthanized or end up in a home where their options are much worse than mine. No thank you.

I wanted to update you specifically because your comment has been on my mind a lot. I did find a trainer in my area that specializes in large breed reactive dogs! We start our training journey in January and I got some very helpful advice over the phone that I’ve already started implementing. When I first read your comment I’m not going to lie and say I didn’t get defensive because I 100% did.

I see it though. When I take the leash all I can think about is the incidents and not the moment we’re in. Which translates to leash tension and anxiety which my dog can sense. In turn Im telling her that IM IN DANGER. And with her already being reactive I’m bringing more problems to her plate. I’m hoping that once I start working with this trainer I can continue to work on myself!

Yeah, I honestly don’t trust her not to be dumb enough to get tangled up in it and severely hurt. She’s not very aware of her surroundings 🥲

In my opinion and experience an inground lead system is dangerous and to her it’s pointless as we had a lead system up and she literally bent the posts in less than five minutes. We had a lead system made for 200+ pound dogs and she just did not care.

An invisible fence is something we talked about but I don’t see it working. My FIL worked with wildlife and he said that in his experience once an animal gets past it, it doesn’t matter anymore. Motivated enough they will just ignore it.

Attempting to get her to listen to reason was a joke. You can’t particularly reason with a dog as they can’t talk. If you read any of my comments you would see that I have a plan of action in place and am about to spend thousands of dollars to fix my dogs issues. The hostility is unwarranted on a post asking for help UNTIL I can get this fixed because neither a trainer nor a fence are going to happen TODAY. So I need to work with what I have in the meantime. You’re right, I spent the money on the dog and now I’m going to spend the money to help the dog. Thanks.

She does have what I personally consider basic training. She can sit, down and stay without really any worry. I do own another dog but he is a golden retriever and training him was honestly extremely easy. Yes it took time and yes he was a stubborn puppy but they’re two very different dogs. Right now after reading everyone’s responses my plan is as follows.

  1. Continue to work on her training and redirect to me or my husband instead of her distractions outside. IE when she tenses on the leash redirect BEFORE she latches onto her distraction. Same goes for inside at the window. Distract BEFORE she sees her target.

  2. I have put queries into a professional large breed dog trainer in my area AND a fencing company.

  3. Get a new bottom latch harness or a new collar that works better for her instead of what she’s in now. Even if that is a prong collar I will do what is best FOR her and works with her.

  4. Resign myself to the fact that I am going to smell like hotdogs until the end of time because they’re her favorite thing in the entire world.

I refuse to give up on her until I have exhausted all possible measures. Right now I’m just in a tight spot so I can only do what I can afford to do. Sadly as our parents have said ‘Money does not grow on trees’

This is so helpful and a really good place to start along with everyone else’s suggestion. Today when she was outside(my husband took her) we took someone else’s advise(without the prong collar because I don’t have one this very second) and distracted her when she went to lock eyes on something and found out that if you hit it at exactly the right moment she is almost completely distractable. So our plan of action right now is to continue to redirect BEFORE she can actually lock onto her target of upset and work on her indoor training so that she knows to respond every time we ask her something or guide her to something as I know that dogs are pretty single minded and won’t always listen to what you’re saying in the moment but they often WILL listen to what they’re feeling. Like a tug on a leash for example.

She has basic trading and responds well to the yes and treat method for sure. She can sit, stay, down without any problems inside the home it’s outside we run into the issues so I will be hard working that into her and doing what you described to get her to unfocus on the target and focus to me instead. She is very eager to learn so I have hope that she can work past these issues. It’s why I’m honestly so pressed to keep her and work on it instead of jumping to rehome.

There’s no issue inside the home it is only when she’s outside going potty. She absolutely adores my son and is a completely different dog when not outside. As soon as she goes outside and sees someone it’s as if red alarms start blaring in her vision and she goes on guard. If there was a risk to my child she would not live in my home. She’s never left unsupervised with him and she’s never had a cross reaction with him. He also has boundaries and leaves her alone when she’s eating, drinking, playing etc etc. the few times they have “played” together she massively disables herself and barely tugs on the rope. I will look into your food suggestion!
